Are the ‘21-‘22 Hawkeyes…

We just gave up over 80 points to a team that had no business getting close to 80 on a big ten team. I think we may be in some trouble. However, if Fran shrinks his rotation to 8 or 9, and plays his best defensive players more minutes, we might better than projected.

21-22 is not better than 20-21.

Keegan is shooting 60% from the floor, 92% from the line, 37.5% from 3, averaging 9.5 rebounds and close to 3 blks per game. If he can do that all season (superman stats) then the Hawks have a chance to be really competitive against the good teams.

But, unfortunately, the good teams have figured out how to stop 1 guy (unless he is Garza), so it will be up to a crew of pretty inexperienced players (plus JBo) to beat the good teams.

This team reminds me of Ohio State last year. Solid 9 deep, good guards, plenty of good forwards, no real centers. I'm hoping they mesh like last years Ohio State team did come tournament time. But as of now, no, I don't see them being as good as last years team. But like Ohio State last year they are young, and have plenty of room for improvement. I'm hoping that they do mesh at the right time, like Ohio State did last year. 5th in the big 10 would be great.

…better than the ‘20-‘21 team? 🤔
Depends how you measure.

Will we be a #2 seed in the tourney? Of course not.

Will we win more total games than last year? More than likely not.

Could this team actually sneak into a sweet 16 IF we make it to the tourney? Possibly.

This team is pretty balanced and for once has the potential tools that are required for a second weekend NCAA appearance. It really all depends on how bad teams are able to abuse us down low. If our interior defense doesn't improve, then this thread will have just been a fun exercise of imagination

That's a little over reaction, yes Alabama St scored 82 points against Iowa but at one point when Iowa called off the dogs it was 101 to 66. The last 5 minutes or so was against mop up players that didn't exactly play stellar defense and allowed a lot of 3 point shots to be put up and to their credit they made just enough to cover the point spread.
Iowa will be fine, and remember Kofi, Edey, Williams, and Dickinson can't play every minute of every game.
Kofi is still a bull in a china shop and at some point will foul out being that bull.

It was a hypothetical meant to generate discussion. I clearly stated my position to take a wait-and-see approach.

We have our answer.

Nothing personal, Franny. 😆

We are not as bad as we played tonight.

But, as usual, the posters on here overreact when we lose and completely melt down.

What was interesting is how the same posters overreacted after beating a cupcake, thinking we were all this and all that.

I remember this last fall and thought then no way...now? This team is different in many ways from lasts years team, they dribble penetrate much more, then are better overall defensively(though the team with Nunge was close as his length in the 3/4 was a big loss) and Keegan is really special.

I think this team is probably harder to match up which could be really interesting when they are in the Tournament. I am trying not to get too excited as some how, some way we always get Charlie Brown'd

Damn. I actually looked for this thread last night but couldn’t remember what I had titled it. Even though you seem to enjoy being a dick to me, I appreciate the bump.

It was end of February/early March that I had in mind when I started this thread back in November. I saw the potential in this team back then and thought there was a chance the so-called “Fran Fade” could work in reverse this season.

And, it is certainly possible Iowa can make some noise in the tournament. They have enough balanced scoring and with the notable improvements in defense and rebounding, this team has a chance to get out of the first weekend of the tournament.

Time will tell.

Well, you compared me to Chis the other day!!!!!

You dick!!!!

;)

I think we should remember what Kent McCausland recently stated. He said that Tom Davis used to remind the team that once you reach the round of 32, all the teams are good.

Some times you need a little luck to get to the round of 16 and beyond.

Even that 1987 team needed some luck to make the Elite 8. Then we ran out of luck vs UNLV.

I agree. I just think it sucks Iowa’s luck in March has been crap since I graduated high school.

In 1999. 😞

When this thread came out, I said, "I don't see this team being as good as last year's team. I did say that I hoped they'd jell like Ohio State did before the tournament last year. I have to say I was wrong. I think this team is better than last years team. What do you guys think?

I don't know if this team is "better" because it really depends on what you judge it on. However I think this is exactly the type of team that makes a big run in March. This team can play man-to-man defense and has the dribble drive game plus a bonifide superstar in Keegan. If Kris ascends during this stretch this could be a national title contender

Short answer, this team is HEALTHIER than last years team and is built differently. With a decent seed and draw this team could make it to the 2nd weekend. If we are on the dread 8/9 line, we will have little chance to make the Sweet 16.

I think this years team is a bit more versatile because of the twins and that makes us dangerous. With Luka it was stop Luka.

Or not stop but stop the other players and contain the Luka damage. Which seemed to work ok.

The jury's still out but this year's team is definitely trying to make its case.

2020-2021:

22-9 record
#8 in Final AP Poll
No reg season conf championship
Lost in Semifinals in B1G Tournament
Lost in 2nd Round of NCAA Tournament as a #2 seed

2021-2022:

25-9 record
#24 in latest AP Poll
No reg season conf championship
Advanced to Championship game in B1G Tournament
Will make the NCAA Tournament, likely as a #5 seed

Make second weekend and yes a better team.
How about the fact last year’s team had 4 maybe 5 NBA players on it?!

last year's team played a tougher nonconference and beat Iowa State but they faltered when it came to winning championships and advancing in the NCAA Tournament

if this year's team gets to a Sweet 16, I think you can make the argument that this year's team ended up being better
