Are we legitimately in the Mendez conversation?

I know we were recruiting him, but I noted on FRL that Pyles said Mendez' top 3 were Penn State, Michigan, and Ohio State. Hopefully he's just wrong, Mendez is a stud.

Corby (Willie’s sidekick) said today that he thinks Mendez will choose Iowa. Doesn’t mean he’s going to Iowa but I think Willie and Corby are more clued in than anyone at Flo.

He will be here next week so we’ll get a shot.

I’m just going to put this here that I’m not entirely sold on Mendez. I like him and think he’ll be very good, but not sure he’s the kind of can’t miss top 3 P4P guy as some others in that category.

Don’t think he will be competing for a title as a freshman. Now, obviously that’s insanely high standards, but that is I think what you want if you put the time, energy, and money into getting a #1 recruit.

Still a guy you want, but if it’s a miss I don’t see it as big of a miss as say Spencer, Ferrari, Brooks, Amos, etc. I think a good coach and team will be able to get similar production out of someone not so high up (possibly a Henson type).

I think Mendez’s resume speaks for it self.

I think Henson is going to be a pleasant surprise but I would put Mendez a notch below the Spencer level (as most are). More like a Marinelli or Kemerer prospect. A couple of those every year will make a very good team.

give me an idea how you think their two careers play out? what do you see for AAs/chips for each guy?
I think if Mendez comes to Iowa, Henson has a hard time ever making line up. If no Mendez, Henson would presumably be 141, and maybe a fringe all American, round of 12 career. Mendez high all American

I think Henson will be better than that, but we will see.

I think Rey nailed it above. I see Mendez as a Marinelli or Kemmerer type. Very good careers, but for a #1 overall recruit I’m hoping for more than maybe a title in Their 6th year.

I mean henson beat cannon, mendez did not

Darn right. Henson took Cannon down five times, and that was just two months after Cannon took 7th at Nationals. And, Schriever had three takedowns to two for Mendez when those two squared off in freestyle earlier this year; Schriever was in deep on Mendez's legs repeatedly but lost on pushouts and one turn.

I'll dance a jig if Iowa gets Mendez, but Henson and Schriever are quality guys in their own right and I don't think there's that much separation in talent/skill, at least not at this stage.

You couldn't be more wrong, maybe you wouldn't want him on your team (Cyclones) but I'd love to see him in Iowa City. He just made the Junior world team AND if he hadn't severely injured his knee in the 3rd and deciding bout at U23's we likely would've seen him make 2 world teams this year.....as a junior in high schoo!!! My God, kid was probably still cadet eligible. We all know what jumps are made from your first year in a college room and most guys in the U23 & Jr brackets had that experience...seriously that's impressive. I also suspect that the injury (which I hear he had surgery on) was why he has underwhelmed at Jr worlds. I'm not saying he's spencer caliber, but he's #1 for a reason

EDIT: meant to quote your "Not entirely sold on Mendez" post.

Henson is awesome though, maybe Mendez will grow into 149. He's tall for his weight.

We could do that with several guys and that’s my point. Let’s do one more:

3x state champ (4x finalist)
Fargo freestyle and Greco champion
Cadet world bronze medalist
Jacob Warner

This is how I view Mendez. These guys are great wrestlers, and any team would be glad to have them. But not can’t miss. If Iowa missed Warner maybe they’d have ended up with Amos or Ferrari. Even if they would only end up with like Woodley, Beard, or Elam the drop off is minimal. And who knows, if Iowa is really great at developing maybe if you flipped schools for Woodley and Warner, Woodley would be better?

The fact that Kemmerer and Marinelli don't have titles has absolutely nothing to do with their high school ranking.

If we are balking on a guy who most objectively believe will be a 4X AA and will absolutely contend for multiple titles I think we’re being a bit delusional. Not every recruit is going to be a no doubt about it multiple champ. I think Mendez has an extremely exciting style, a fantastic skill set and with the combination of the training partners he would get and the Brands brothers, the skies the limit for him IMHO.

Mendez is obviously very good but there is some major underselling of Henson in this thread.
I'm not 100% sold on Henson just because he's shown no mat game whatsoever. Anytime you see a kid choosing neutral and not riding at the high school level is a red flag for me. Note that most of his big wins are in freestyle. I need to see mat competency, at least underneath, before I'm sold.

Did he in high school? Did he when he got to Iowa?
He was fine underneath coming in. He got ridden by one guy, Jack Mueller. Desanto was choosing down against everybody not named Spencer Lee in high school.

I'm not saying Henson sucks on the mat. He may just choose neutral because he wants to work on his feet an not waste time. I just want to see him get out from college wrestlers before I predict him to be great. Love everything else.

Warner will be the most hated on 4 time all American ever….

You sure you aren’t just salty cuz Dash whipped your bro wrestling up a few weights? They’re teammates now. Get over it.
Who’s my bro? You making stuff up again? The question was , Mendez or Henson potential, my opinion I would take Mendez. Who would you take ? I didn’t say Henson was bad, I just think Mendez is better.
