These ladies on SNF left hats on and they were up with the lady singing. They were cancer survivors so maybe that has something to do with it. Educate me HROT.

National anthem etiquette days women are allowed to leave their hat on during the national anthem unless it is a unisex hat like a baseball cap.

LOL, another ridiculous double standard.

They deserve to make only 75 cents on the dollar of what a man makes.

We all know women are not expected to follow the same rules as men. Tell me that’s not true after the first woman registers for Selective Service.

Some cultural codes require covering the head, others uncovering the head. I wonder what the original purpose of these behaviors was.

I have read that the modern military salute evolved from the chivalric tradition of lifting the visor to show the face prior to launch in jousting tournaments. I don't know if that's actually true, but I like it.

I wonder if the head covering/uncovering rules have similarly interesting origins.

That's fun to ponder. I always figured it had something to do with intricate feminine hair styles. I bet if men still wore powdered wigs, they wouldn't want to take their hats off either. Of course hats used to be a lot more popular overall. If we were inventing a tradition today it would probably involve saluting with your cell phone.

I assumed you saluted servicemen in uniform with something very different than a phone.

I always take my hat off during the anthem, but I must admit I think it is kind of odd. How is that respectful? How is it disrespectful for someone to keep their hat on? Why does anyone care?

We had a guy in front of us at games at Kinnick that would yell at someone every week to take their hat off. Most of the time the band hadn't even started yet. It was as if the guy was looking for people to berate. Seemed odd.

Did anyone ever ask him "why?" Or tell him to go F himself? Did he ever yell at others after the music started (which to me would be a much worse offense)?

There wasn't a game that passed without him getting into it with someone about something. After too many beers before the tOSU game in 2010 I told him to shut the eff up after he yelled at someone a few rows down. I could have handled it better, but the people around us were laughing their ass off and I received a few high fives. He shut it the rest of that game, but was up to the same crap the following year. We changed seats prior to last year as he was just ruining the experience.

Why would women have to take their hats off? I sure don't. I don't even look at the flag. Half the time I just play on my phone until the song is over.

Nice troll
Not trolling. I don't care about the National Anthem. If I feel like ignoring it, I will. It's what America is all about. If you want to ignore the flag, or even burn the flag, you have the right to do so.

I wasn't in the military but a friend of mine was and he would leave his hat on but salute during the national anthem. He said that is proper protocol for military personnel.

It's been a long-standing practice that women are not required to remove their head coverings during the signing of the national anthem. Same thing in some churches, as well.

A friend of mine has a Masters of Theology and he tells me strict interpretation of the Old Testament is clear that women from puberty on up should wear a head-covering in church. Just sayin'.

At Yankee Stadium, the cathedral of baseball, the public
address announcer will say before the National Anthem:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, please rise as we honor America.
Kindly, remove your cap and place your hand over your
heart."

Whenever you watch the Olympics on TV, you see the
winners of the gold, silver, and bronze medals get on
the stand. Then we listen to the National Anthem of
each winner. It is a tradition.

The anthem shouldn't be played before sporting events, anyway.

Dumbest tradition ever invented.
Rookie.

It took the contributions and sacrifices of countless patriots to earn you the privilege of attending or watching a sporting event in this country, so it is certainly appropriate to honor our flag and what it stands for. If you don't get that, go to Antarctica or something.

Why don't we play it before movies then? How about concerts? Plays?
