Argentina Update

More like Denmark, Norway, France, Sweden. Nice try, though. Weird how no far right countries are thriving, isn’t it?
norway has 5M people subsidized by oil. None of the rest of those countries are currently thriving, they are trending in the wrong direction and are moving away from socialist models. that said by no means am i saying that far right is the way to go for them or that argentina is better.

The posters castigating what Argentina is doing now are the same folks having no problem with the debt in the US exploding, and also thinking taxing the rich will generate enough income tax revenue to pay for current debt, but also pay for even more deficit spending.

Yep,.. It's always been easy to look for someone else to finance your fun...

BUENOS AIRES, June 11 (Reuters) - Argentina's monthly inflation rate is expected to come in at 4.9% in May, according to a Reuters poll of analysts published on Tuesday, which would be the slowest rise since the end of 2022 amid a major austerity drive by President Javier Milei.

"Inflation dropped to practically half the rate compared to April," Economy Minister Luis Caputo said at an event on Tuesday, referring to April's rate of 8.8% and signaling that the May number would come in below 5%.
"For those who said we couldn't get it below 7%, well, the (new May) number starts with a 4."

Can’t wait to see how this ends. It’s going to be a shitshow.

Did you think the Peronist government expanding the debt over 300% in 2023 didn’t create the shit show that Milei was elected to fix?

The people hired Milei to end the debt orgy, before it went to Venezuela-Zimbabwe territory.

The mess wasn’t made overnight, and the cleanup won’t be overnight, but things are finally going the right direction with a balanced budget stopping the bleeding.

The piper will still have to be paid for the Peronists debt orgy, that’s baked into Argentine society’s cake. The key is that the people elected Milei to stop it from ending even worse.

Argentina inflation seen at 31-month low of 3.9% in August

Argentina‘s poverty rate has skyrocketed to 60%. Pensioners are marching in the streets fighting benefit cuts. So I am sure this “libertarian” clown isn’t going to do something really fiscally irresponsible and fascist while hurting the middle and working class. Oh, wait…

Probably sees the military as an actual constitutional function of the central government.

Is your preference that Argentina strengthens military ties with China?

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a think-tank, Argentina spends less on defense as a share of gdp than any other country in South America. Almost 90% of the armed forces’ budget is used to pay salaries and pensions for its 72,000 members. Little money is left over to maintain clapped-out ships, aircraft and vehicles.

Mr Milei is increasing spending in part to deepen ties with the United States. Since taking over from left-wing populist governments in December, he has shunned China and Russia. In April he scrapped a deal to purchase Chinese-made fighter jets and instead agreed to buy 24 used f-16 jets from Denmark for US$ 300m (the United States contributed US$ 40m to support the purchase). Argentina has also asked to become a “global partner” of NATO, which would grant it better access to co-operation and training with Western armed forces.

Of course not. It’s a question of timing. Argentina‘s citizens are being asked to do without promised pensions, why on
Earth would now be the time to beef up on Military spending, regardless of where these purchases are coming from? Why do American fighter jets take precedent over retirees being able to stay above the poverty line?

Sounds smart. Other than anti-poverty and austerity protestors, who are the state's enemies?

I didn't expect you to be on the side of the state.

Or maybe they are planning to try to take the Falklands again? Probably not a great idea.

This is a year old (so the prior government raising the concern first, not Milei).

F-16 can carry Harpoon missiles. :)

Because you mistake me for an anarchist.
The military is one of the constitutional roles of most countries.
In the Americas I think only Costa Rica doesn't have a military.

Or maybe they are planning to try to take the Falklands again? Probably not a great idea.

Zero chance he's considering that. He's sending central bank gold to London.

Argentina’s Javier Milei denounces UN’s ‘socialist’ agenda in speech

Libertarian leader accuses international organisation of restricting members’ freedom in debut address

Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei has accused the UN of imposing a “socialist” agenda on its members and called on countries to sign up to a “freedom agenda”, in a fiery speech that underlined his status as a political provocateur beloved by the alt right.

In his debut address to the UN general assembly in New York on Tuesday, Milei focused on the 42-page “Pact for the Future” adopted by the UN on Sunday, which includes points promoting climate action, gender equality and regulation of artificial intelligence.“

Argentina will not back any policy that implies the restriction of individual freedoms or trade, nor the violation of the natural rights of individuals,” Milei said. “We invite all nations of the free world to join us, not only in opposing this pact, but in the creation of a new agenda for this noble institution: the freedom agenda.”

He added that the UN’s previous 2030 sustainable development agenda was “a supranational programme of a socialist nature” and accused the UN of becoming “multi-tentacled Leviathan that seeks to decide what each nation state should do and how the citizens of the world should live”.

Milei has courted the global spotlight since taking office in December, speaking regularly at multilateral summits and conservative political conferences and forming friendships with prominent figures such as Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, whom Milei met with for the third time on Monday in New York City.“

My companies are actively looking for ways to invest in and support Argentina,” Musk said in a post on his X platform on Tuesday.Earlier this month in an interview with broadcaster LN+ Milei referred to himself as “one of the most relevant politicians on planet earth. One is Donald Trump and the other is me.”

Milei’s domestic agenda has largely focused on fixing Argentina’s worst economic crisis in two decades, mainly by rolling out a severe austerity package designed to bring down triple-digit inflation.

But the libertarian economist, who has denied the existence of human-caused climate change and is a staunch opponent of Argentina’s legalisation of elective abortion, has also pledged to wage a “cultural battle” against Argentina’s left.

He has dissolved Argentina’s women’s and environment ministries and shut down its anti-discrimination institute.“I’m here to warn you that we are at the end of a cycle,” Milei said at the UN on Tuesday. “The collectivism and moral posturing of the woke agenda have collided with reality.”

Good to hear. The Labour Party can freeze it when Milei kills enough protestors.

The violent protestors who are trying to disrupt their Congress?

Milei’s government, meanwhile, pointed to the violent tactics some protesters allegedly used as the afternoon wore on.

Officials said 18 people had been detained after reports emerged of rock-throwing and the use of sticks as weapons. A car belonging to the radio station Cadena 3 was also set on fire.

Waldo Wolff, the minister of justice and security for the city of Buenos Aires, said one person was even found “with a grenade”.

“The culture of violence that sets the pace for demonstrations is at an end,” he wrote on the social media platform X.

“In addition to the 18 detained, we are going to take the images to the justice system so that everyone who broke sidewalks [and] burned cars and trash cans will pay.”

The administration of President Milei went further, accusing the demonstrators of attempting to overthrow the government and disrupt Congress’s proceedings.

“We went to protect Congress, and they responded with stones and fire,” Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said on X.

The social media account for the executive office issued a message as well, congratulating the armed forces “for their excellent actions in repressing the terrorist groups that, with sticks, stones and even grenades, attempted to perpetrate a coup d’état”.

Jan 17 (Reuters) - Argentina brought in its first budget surplus in more than a decade in 2024, data published on Friday showed, marking a win for libertarian President Javier Milei and his sweeping austerity push in his first full year in office.
The nation's budget surplus came in at 1.76 trillion pesos, or 0.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the full year, the economy ministry said. Meanwhile the primary fiscal balance, which excludes debt payments, was up to a 10.41 trillion peso surplus, or 1.8% of the GDP.

Poverty amelioration via the printing press is illusory and simply unsustainable.
Otherwise you'd never get to see signs like this:

Argentina’s economy is showing promising signs of recovery, defying expectations in a challenging global landscape. The country’s unemployment rate has dropped to 6.9% in the third quarter of 2024, down from 7.6% in the previous quarter. This improvement marks a significant step forward for the South American nation.
The job market is displaying resilience, with the employment rate rising to 45%. This uptick suggests that more Argentinians are finding work, contributing to the country’s economic stability. The government’s efforts to balance inflation control with growth are beginning to bear fruit.
Recent fiscal measures have yielded positive results. Argentina has managed to turn fiscal surpluses and improve its international reserves by $10 billion in early 2024. This financial strengthening provides a solid foundation for future economic growth.
Compared to its neighbors, Argentina’s recovery trajectory is unique.

All he did was bloat the military and…

CIA: In 2024, Argentina's military budget was estimated to be $919.7 million, or 0.8% of the country's GDP.

Which is about half the South American average. But it sounds good to say that it's a bloated military, right? Just rolls off the tongue, facts be damned!
