He gave up one “offensive” point all tournament and that was a push out. He has very good head hands defense. His stature automatically makes it tough to get to his legs. If by some miracle a guy does get to his legs he has unbelievably explosive hips and quickness. I remember Joe Williams being almost impossible to take down and I’m optimistic Gabe will be equally stingy.

Agree. He seems to have an average offensive arsenal but insanely elite neutral defense. I don’t know how anyone will take him down.
Yeah, its hard not to sacrifice one for the other. Recent guys like Metcalf, Taylor and Nolf were insanely active in neutral. However, that often made themselves open to neutral attacks. The problem was NO ONE(except Caldwell) was offensive enough to begin to win that takedown battle.

On the flipside, you had guys like Dake, Gavin and even guys like Simmons, Askren or Perry who thrived off their opponents shooting on them. But, when the rare time came where they fell behind and had to get to their offense, they were all somewhat limited with "go to" attacks.

Personally, I like watching that impenetrable, fundamental positioning awareness. The discipline it takes is extraordinary. However, at the highest level, it can often be less than entertaining for the "entertain me" fans. Hopefully, Gabe can find some middle ground where he holds that positioning at the right times and opens up when it matters. It can be a fine line, but he sure looks talented enough to be able to do both. Starocci is probably the most recent and best example. He still relies heavily on his defense against the best opponents, but he has found a way to open up a bit more when it counts.

Why does Gabe wear that bulky knee pad backwards on his shin? Is it to cause opponents to grab it illegally if they get to the leg? If so it worked to perfection in the finals, won him the match really.

His opponent "accidentally" grabbed it for like 7-8 seconds.

I knew a guy who did that and it was because he had a small cartilage tear and when his knee was fully bent, the knee would lock up. That could be the reason.

Yeah like a catcher in baseball type thing, most likely feels it gives him a bit of support there. I see a few workers for contractors using this sort of thing now also.

Lugo did not get taken down much at all his senior year. Brando Sorensen was nearly never taken down except by that one guy I wont mention.
Do we want to make a distinction between a guy who makes it tough to get to his legs (aka Sorensen) and a guy who makes it tough to score after you do get to his legs. I always thought Kem was hard to take down once you got to his legs and I also though it was tough to get to his legs.
Randy Lewis, back in the day, was very dangerous once you got to his legs.

Would you say Lewis had a leg that was impossible to score on? And another that was nearly impossible to score on?

Kem was taken down some but he has the strong hips and also a great scrambler if hips didn't work. With Lugo, guys just couldn't get a sniff at a shot, he threw in the underarms alot.

Wade Schalles was the most dangerous I remember when someone put their hands on him.

Hmm, let’s see. A couple of years ago Gabe was at Wyoming Seminary. Their previous coach is now an assistant at a D1. I’d like to buy a vowel, E. Okay, I’d like to solve the puzzle. Is it Scott Green?
