In the victory over Iowa State, QB Beathard showed the
qualities of a leader who refuses to lose. At the end of
the first half he scrambled down the field with his rushing
ability and in the fourth quarter he won the game with his
passing prowess.

The guy has that intangible knack to inspire his team to
never give up. Iowa had a few bad breaks in the game
but Beathard never had panic written on his face. Look
for a great year for the Hawkeyes behind the leadership
of Beathard.

For the first quarter, it was pretty even and I wasn't impressed but hopeful.

In the 2nd quarter, I really did think ISU was out-playing us. I was very bummed.

In the 3rd quarter I loved the lucky bounce to our advantage. Seems like in the ISU series we don't draw many "bank error in your favor" cards...

4th quarter, what can you say? GREAT defensive effort, great job CJ.

But yet our coaches made him carry clipboards last year. Idiots.

Just like they did with Rudock (and CJ) the year before. I have been calling for CJ to start since his RS FR year. I saw him in the spring game his true FR year and he clearly had the best arm of the group, Vandenberg included. KF is clueless on QB talent evaluation and development.

So KF gets no credit for telling a senior he isn't going to start next year. Nope, you made that call. Thanks it got us a win today. LOL

Pretty tough to beat leadership, determination, and talent at the QB position. Great game. Very elite.

Please don't misunderstand this because there isn't a literal comparison...but he reminded me a lot of Aaron Rogers of GB.

Great win:

Iowa wore out the Clones in the second half, physically.

For the first time in a long time...Iowa looked to be prepared and well coached. (I didn't get to watch the first quarter and a bit of the second)

Glad the bizarre play calling at the end of the half didn't come back to bite...

I do give him credit, but he's a year late. He's been a year late before...several times. Once with a Heisman runner-up. You know this. Don't try to deflect the issue.

Jake Christensen is the issue.

In the second half the offensive line of the Hawkeyes
started pushing the Cyclones around. Furthermore,
our defense finally started putting some pressure on
the Iowa State QB Richardson. Who motivated them,?
Our QB C.J.Beathard is someone they want to play for.

From what I seen CJB won the game. Play calling and clock management had something to be desired. Not a KF or GD hater but they could have done better.
Agree 100%.hit the nail on the head. A year late

Nailed it. A year late is the issue when it was clear to many (even all of us "arm chair QBs) who the better leader/athlete was. Don't get me wrong, I still have a lot of respect for KF and all he has done yet this is a good example of his stubbornness and how this can and has had a negative impact in many scenarios.

He (and GD as well I guess) also get credit for that "genius" fake FG call at the end of the first half as well.

Let's not crown him king just yet still lots of football to be played he does look good though

Looked good??? He looked light years ahead of Rodock at this same time last year. Better decision making, better arm, better throws, BETTER RUNS, BETTER OVERALL. CJB IS OUR MAN, HE IS THE NEXT GREAT HAWKEYE QB!!!!!!!!!

GO BRETHARD!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO HAWKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LED US ON TO VICTORY CJB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In KFs tenure, we have had very quality QB play for the most part. CJ appears to be a much more seasoned QB this season and is making great decisions. His talent was obvious last year, but he did not seem as matured. It is a waste of time talking about last year. Let's enjoy watching a special player the next 2 years.

This^^^^^^^^^^^^ I could not agree more.

Not just Beathard, but Desmond King as well. They both do an outstanding job of playing forward. Learn from past mistakes and adjust, but the most important thing is to get back on your feet after a poor play or a mistake. Don't hang your head, just make the NEXT play, because that's what you can control. And when your best players have this attitude, the rest of the team will follow.

It's too early to tell if this will be a good team, but their collective attitude of WIN THE NEXT PLAY creates the possibility of a special year.

Beathard reminded me of of Drew Tate today. No crazy spin move, but (hellyeah) he's a better runner.
The offense had a procedure penalty and I saw some fired up emotion out of him, which, I know is always controversial among a segment of the fan base, but I loved it. It shows me he expects the team to play at a higher level, his desire to WIN. Iowa needs that emotional leadership.

I made the same reference to Tate last week. He has an ability to scramble and keep his eyes downfield.

Shook off a poor start and beginning with that last drive of the first half, ultimately botched by terrible coaching mistakes, dominated the game. Three hundred plus combined yards, 3TD passes, huge plays at huge moments. It was just a great game for CJ.

EXACTLY. IT looks as though the team loves him and love playing for him.

The late, great Iowa Hawkeye Football Coach Evy said
that a successful team has intangible qualities in the
equation. He would have been proud to know C.J.
Beathard at quarterback.

One of the best throwers of the ball on the run I've seen in awhile.

I agree; I can't recall a recent IA QB who has the arm strength to get the ball down the field AND the accuracy to thread it into small windows.

I suspect that the coaches saw that ability early on, but CJB probably took too many risks and made bad reads in his first years in the program - the coaches said he made 'light years' improvements over the past off-season. He seems to read plays well, and made very good decisions to throw the ball away when a play wasn't there (the near-safety being the only exception in this game).

He also has a knack for being able to improvise when plays break down, and the running ability to keep defenses from cheating back too much when he rolls out of the pocket.

Seems like a natural leader that calms the rest of the guys down, too. He could really be a catalyst for a couple good FB seasons.

Even on TV you could see CJ's leadership ability. He was walking around slapping guys on the shoulder pads with a big smile, and guys were clearly responding to him. I noticed he was interacting a fair amount with guys who hadn't seen the field, either -- also a sign of a strong leader. Not just hanging out with the key contributors but interacting with everyone on the team.

Whenever CJ got some playing time last year I thought the entire offense played with a little more "swagger". He is really showing what he can do now in the full-time leadership role.

The fan base knew this last year. Too bad the coach didn't get the memo. Also, where are the posters who said fans would be clamoring for the back up? Looks like fans were right, again.

The coaches say he made light years improvement so they don't look like such idiots for sitting him even though it's too late.

CJB has made significant progress vs. last year in his QB skills (QB rating for the last 2 games is 2x his Purdue start rating).

CJB:
Quarterback rating in 2014 start vs. Purdue: 42.6
Quarterback rating in 2015 start vs. Tennessee (bowl game): 62.5
Quarterback rating in 2015 start vs. Illinois State: 87.9
Quarterback rating in 2015 start vs. ISU: 86.9

Considering Jake R's QB rating for the 2014 season was 71, more than 10 pts better than CJB's best starting performance, it's somewhat dubious to question the coaching staff on selecting the starter last year, as Jake did have a full season of game experience under his belt as well.
