...here is a list of Big Ten teams who will have played in the Rose Bowl more recently than Iowa:
Our quarter century of absence from Pasadena has not been enjoyable, especially since there were a couple of years in there where it looked like we might go and didn't, for one reason or another. And in fact, this drought is actually 2 years longer than the drought before Hayden took over! Wrap your brain around that one for a bit.
All of that having been said, can you even begin to imagine the anguish Gophers fans feel from having not been there since 1962. Nine-teen-sixty-EFFIN'-two!
Here's a little context to put January 1, 1962 into perspective:
Here are a few famous people who just missed on being alive for the Golden Gophers' last Pasadena trip:
- John F. Kennedy was still 19 days from completing his first year in office.
- The Bay of Pigs happened only 8 months earlier.
- The Seattle Space Needle was still under construction.
- Alan Shepard became the first American in space only 7 months earlier.
- The Berlin Wall began construction a scant 5 months earlier.
- The Peace Corps was still 3 months away from celebrating its 1st Anniversary.
- Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single-season HR record exactly 3 months earlier.
- American combat troops and materials had officially been in Vietnam for three weeks.
- The U.S. embargo against Cuba was still a month away from beginning.
- Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game happened 2 months later.
- MN native Bob Dylan's debut album was still 2 months away from being released.
- The Beatles still had not released their official debut album.
Since January 1962, not only have the Gophers gone 0-fer the Rose Bowl, they've had to watch every traditional member of the Big Ten Conference (yes, even Indiana), plus newer member Penn State go to the Rose Bowl at least once. Nebraska did it when they weren't even a member of the conference yet! To make matters worse, their two chief rivals, Wisconsin and Iowa--programs they almost assuredly feel they should be on par with and against whom they most often compete on the recruiting trail--have gone to a combined 11 Rose Bowls in that span. Hell, while we're at it, we might as well throw in our 2 Orange Bowls if you want to really pour salt into the open wound.
- Jim Carrey - Jan 17
- Clint Black - Feb 4
- Axl Rose - Feb 6
- Garth Brooks - Feb 7
- Sheryl Crow - Feb 11
- Herschel Walker - Mar 3
- Matthew Broderick - Mar 21
- MC Hammer - Mar 30
Now THAT'S a Rose Bowl drought.
Meh.Keep going, Doodle...you know you got more bottled up inside you.
And for the first 34 years of that drought, I'm sure they comforted themselves with the "well, at least we're not Northwestern" line. And then another 20 years passed...Our quarter century of absence from Pasadena has not been enjoyable, especially since there were a couple of years in there where it looked like we might go and didn't, for one reason or another. And in fact, this drought is actually 2 years longer than the drought before Hayden took over! Wrap your brain around that one for a bit.
