Assistant Coaches

Just asking- what does Matt bring to the table? I know that he is an Iowa native but what does that get you?
A boner to some people who have a weird obsession with him? Some were wanting to hire him as the head coach. Not sure what he’s done to get that level of respect. He was the best player during a rough time and I appreciate him for that. But nothing more. He’s got to prove he can coach. Maybe if he could’ve taken over the defense and made Fran’s teams respectable we could talk about it ; but we all know that didn’t happen.

Why would the new coach necessarily even want the old staff who they have no connection to? Whomever it ends up being will bring/choose their own.
Back in the day, Hayden retained Bernie Wyatt from Commings’ staff. The primary reasons for doing that would be for relationships with returning players and recruiting connections. Under the new transfer rules those reasons may no longer hold. Of course, an assistant from the outgoing staff could apply for an opening if the new coach doesn’t bring everyone with him.

I find it quite humorous that the majority of folks (myself included) wanted Fran gone, but now when push comes to shove, folks are like, "But we've got to keep this assistant and that assistant.....oh, and we need to keep all these players too." C'mon guys, the head coach, the assistants, and the players are all the ones responsible for missing the tournament the last 2 years and getting that resounding 15th place finish in the B1G.

I for one hope BM cleans house and starts over fresh.

We fans have no idea how good or bad Gatens is. Whatever he has done so far has been done Fran’s way, and pretty behind the scenes, to us fans.

But he has always bled black and gold. And speaking just for me, I like that.

Bernie was kept due to his east coast connections. He had started a pretty good pipeline that got better when fry came.

I'll try to bring this back on track.

Coach McCollum said he would bring three assistant coaches from his Drake staff. That leaves two openings. Gatens was at the press conference so he might be a possibility. Will he bring in someone from outside or another Iowa assistant?

Kyle Denning was there too.
