At least one NFL scout didn’t sugarcoat his opinions on Petras and the iowa offense

Was reading an article on the lions’ draft and they had this to say about Laporta, which Hawkeye fans already knew:

“He has very good hands. He’s got to get better as a blocker but he’s more than willing as a blocker. He had a shitty quarterback. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being one of the better tight ends if not the best in this class.”

“Runs excellent routes and has excellent hands. Great feel. Will be a play-making tight end. That offense was terrible, but you can tell he is a good athlete. He’s a starter based on what’s playing in the league, for sure.”

I feel kind of bad for Spencer. He’s clearly a bad QB and he’ll forever be remembered as one. But it’s not his fault the coaches trotted him out there for three years without finding a more capable replacement. And, for the most part, he had terrible OL and WR play, which made him look that much worse.

Seems like a great kid. So I’m sure he’ll turn out fine. Just feel for him that he’ll be looked at mostly negatively in the context of Iowa football history.

It would be 100% wrong to blame Spencer. He did everything his coaches asked of him. I really think he should be remembered as a great Hawkeye. Like you said, he seems like a great kid. It's not his fault he had a lineman trying to teach him how to play quarterback. It's not his fault the coaches failed in recruiting guys to play next to him.
Spencer Petras is the sacrificial lamb in the Brian Ferentz experiment.

Just wait until next year when we are begging for Petras to come back in.

Counterpoint is that they recruited someone with more passing yards than Jared Goff or Dan Fouts at the same high school, and it is reasonable to expect him to target pass catchers with a modicum of accuracy.

Kirk loved him some Spencer. Brian seemed like he wanted to move on from Spencer multiple times but his father has final say. They’ll have to find a new Sacramento Lamb next season.

Sure, but you can't expect anyone to progress as a college quarterback without coaches that know how to develop college quarterbacks. Spencer was making bad throws for three years and no one knew how to teach him how to make better throws. It didn't help that his offensive lines were among the worst in the Ferentz era yet the play calling didn't adjust. They just sent him out there to get pounded. They kept pretending that what they were doing was eventually going to work, despite the abysmal results.
Spencer did the best he could with what he had to work with, which was a steaming pile of dogs***.

You mean "Sacramento Lamb".

It was a group effort being that bad for sure, but there was a huge drop off from Stanley, with much of the rest of the team/coaching remaining the same.

The offensive line was the worst since the days of FXL...don’t sugar coat the issue. The o-line was not B10 caliber....not even close.
If the o-line is no better, it makes no difference who the QBs is...or the running backs...or the wide receivers.
There are 5 positions that will make a difference this year. Defensively and special team-wise, this years team will be fine but it has to have a little help from the offense (line).

Petras is a great kid. Still helping at practices. He was recently at the casino helping raise money for wounded warriors. He will be successful wherever he lands…
I do give him credit for standing in front of the media and not making excuses or pointing fingers. He could have pretty easily.
To the whose fault is it question, I’d say 80/20 goes to the staff.

I don't know what his plans are, but I hope he turns out to be a great coach. Would be a good way to get some redemption on his football career

That writer clearly has not seen Petras in practice.

What this does besides confirming Spencer was awful:
1. Coaching apparently cannot identify and develop the QB position
2. Recruiting is terrible at the QB position
3. Oh and Spencer was awful

I sometimes wondered about this. It seems cedible to me that Brian would have yanked Petras early on but was over-ruled. If true, I blame Brian as well. If you are the OC and prohibited from implementing your offense, you do the honorble thing and take a new job at the end of the season. The family relationship obviously complicated matters.

Hmmmm, seems like an extreme over simplification!?

Their real crime was not bringing in a Portal QB. They didn’t have a good, ready QB on the roster….

I know, I know that doesn’t travel near as well as “Bad Ole’ Ferentz’”….LOL

LOL….yep because that’s what KOK did years back?! Or most coaches as far as that goes…?!

Peoples talking about honor on an anonymous message board is always good for a laugh!

1) until it wasn’t…

2) and also until it wasn’t

3) and yes, Spencer and our rostered QBs weren’t good, nor were the WRs or the OL !

That’s the trifecta….doesn’t have to be more than, that!

Link to any NFL scout or evaluator who did sugarcoat Iowa’s offense?

Oh, look, we found the guy who doesn’t understand team defense and good passing.
What's your point? Mine was that Oglesby was purportedly a lights out shooter during practice, but couldn't shoot consistently during games when the lights came on. But break it down for me how I don't understand team defense and good passing.

Petras is a serviceable quarterback if given a perfectly clean, long-lasting pocket. Give him any modicum of pressure and he turns to shit in an instant.

Given Iowa's mediocre and inconsistent offensive line play, that was a perfect storm for a totally inept offense.

Could Brian maybe call things better to overcome those deficiencies? Maybe a little. But I don't think even the best OC in the world could have made much lemonade out of Iowa's basket of lemons last year.

What is funny is I think Iowa is likely to look at least average on offense this year with a good QB, a slightly better line and a couple of legit receivers. And all the armchair QBs will be pumping their chests about how Brian "finally listened!" to their complaints. BAU.
