yep, and prior to Maryland, was shooting worse than Connor from the 3pt line. JBo must have unleashed all of the 3pt mojo at Maryland.
Nothing against Ash, but if it had been me, and I truly believed in my ability, I would have transferred to a school where I actually had a chance to play. He had to know the reality of his situation here and he must have settled on being a "two minutes at the end of blowouts" type of player.
Or he just wanted to roll the dice on being able to contribute on a high level where the worst case scenario is he winds up being a garbage time player while getting a year of free tuition with room & board at Iowa. Sure he probably could have went to a D2 or a D3 school and gotten more playing time but he also may have always wondered "what if?".
This, Fran took the easy way out and gave the last scholarship to a player that was going to enter the portal anyway. Fran should've been docked a million dollars for this egregious BS.
If it wasn't for Keegan and Kris this Iowa team would be right beside Maryland and Minnesota in the Big Ten standings. Those two saved his butt, but in true McCaffery fashion he manages to coach Iowa to losses in close games every year and this year is no exception...

How did they “save his butt”? He saw they were talented and offered a scholarship. It’s not like he just happened to get lucky
By your line of thinking, wouldn’t every coach in America who has a job also have their butt saved by the players? No one else offered the Murray’s so shouldn’t Fran be applauded for recruiting the right players to play well and “save his butt” when no one else saw the potential?
Some of you want Fran to fail so badly. I just don’t get wanting our coaches to fail. It’s the same way with football too.
I certainly don't want Fran to fail, but in reality he does a great job of it all on his own. How many times in his 12 years at Iowa has he managed to come close to winning either the Big Ten or as a fall back, the Big Ten Championship or reached the sweat 16 in the NCAA tournament.

The reality is that we don't know how many portal guys that the staff contacted. One thing that nobody can fault Fran on is his talent evaluation. It's not like the Murray twins were the first two players Fran grabbed that were under recruited and he grabbed. He's also tried hard to get the big fish and we've come up just short so many times... but he's at least given Iowa a chance.
I also don't think that the Murray's are the only good players. Patrick is really starting to develop into his own and other guys are showing flashes. The Hawks aren't going to be world beaters but this team is starting to click a bit more.
Yep, giving Ash a scholarship is going to keep Fran from accomplishing any of this.
Ash would have been mighty late on entering the portal if he had real hopes of getting something "better". Any targets Fran had from the portal had already committed elsewhere, just look at the timing. Fran chose to not waste the one year scholarship.

He wasn't going to find another player at this time so was pretty nice of him to give this kid a $30,000 scholarship instead of just keeping it in the bank. I know you would turn it down if this was your child...
