Austin O'Connor interview

He came to the Grapple and Iowa still isn't in his top 5. Old Dominion over Iowa? I would say more than likely Iowa has moved on from Austin, so we should too.

It sounds like he wants to be a part of something that is starting to be good. UNC and the like. Some kids like to be the pioneers and help start a tradition (UNC, NC State, VTech, Mizzoo) and some like to carry on a tradition (Iowa, OSU). He sounds like a pioneer type.

Also thinking that the Inn is full at his projected weight. He's a good one to be sure. Maybe we haven't been recruiting him hard.

Also Brands. Everybody seems to forget about him. Must be the name or something ;)
Nelson doesn't have the resume Berge has. Not to say he can't get there in a couple of years. Honestly, I don't think Nelson goes to Iowa. If he has good grades I bet he goes Ivy League.

Nelson already said it would be pretty weird not to wrestle for his Dad and Uncle. Also, Nelson's ceiling is pretty freaking high IMO. Think he started in 7th grade? I'd take the genetic bet on this one. That and he has good buds the same age coming in.

So are we even recruiting this kid? Assuming we aren't because I would "assume" we would be in his Top 5 if we were ... Not saying that in a cocky way ... I would just think with his list of a Top 5 that Iowa would be one of them ...

Unless he just doesn't want to go to Iowa. Oddly some kids don't want to come to school here for one reason or another.

Despite the interviewers best efforts.

As you know Pyles, interviewing isn't easy. There is a certain art to it. By reading the script, it probably was a little awkward as there was definitely an Iowa lean on Todd's part (as you would expect) and a non-Iowa lean from O'Connors part. Rather than purely talk wrestling, who his coaches were, who influenced him, etc. In has past interviews it was easier because they were excited about Iowa and going on and on about that. If there isn't the excitement, it's pretty hard to ask which Iowa wrestler you like. So, I'm sure like anyone who has ever interviewed, Todd will continue to improve and provide us this content that I think we all enjoy and he will continue to build his list of questions to expand beyond just Iowa, especially when they are not in the Top 5.

The dude writes articles for fun. Of course he's going to want a top recruit to come to Iowa. I enjoy reading them. Keep up the good work bud. I also enjoy reading your stuff if that makes you feel better.

If this is a troll it is an excellent one. You have me.

If it isn't a troll...well...

Is an interviewer allowed to tell a recruit that they want them to attend a certain university? Serious question, not sure if that falls into a recruiting violation technically? I would assume if he donates any money to said university then he would be considered a booster correct? Not busting balls just curious.

I'd much rather recruit potential/ceiling than resume.

Granted, proven winners are good to have. But high school trophies don't do much in college.

And this is assuming we are discussing strategy in a vacuum with kids who don't have both, I'm not discussing Brands/Berge specifically.

Guy runs a fan blog. In sports like basketball and football, one is knee deep in them. As long as the University doesn't sponsor the guy or he is not an official organ (so to speak) of it, it's all good

As much as I hate to say it, because he seems like a great guy and I love (LOVE) the work he does, but that's not necessarily true...

http://compliance.hawkeyesports.com/booster info/boosternew.html#booster

Is he a booster? Does Tom (or any official st Iowa) send him out or have any control (editorial or otherwise) of who Todd interviews?

Plus, blogs are considered media and Todd is an established author. Rules are a bit different. Todd is a homer but it brings up a good point. I'd remove the "Hope you come to Iowa" line.

So how kosher is this?

The definition of booster was in the link. It isn't crystal clear but in short any donor or former athlete is a booster. If he's not that, he's basically good to go. Either way, we agree on the rest. I'd hate to see the interviews stop.

True. Looking at what Chickenman posted, big difference between I hope you become a Hawk to I'm going to steer mofos our way.

That was pretty blatant.

Yeah, I was shocked. I deconstructed the statement being as legalistic and, dare I say, Clintonesque, as possible, and there's not a lot of wiggle room there. How many high school kids are part of clubs like that?

Thank you for the feedback, ladies and gentleman.

I normally make my post and then stay out of the way. But this is an exception.

Those that know me, know that I am anything but a former college athlete or a rich booster. Those that do not know me, trust me, I am not.

What I am trying to do is create for us what college football has for recruiting in the form of media attention. I know that well over half of my readers are NOT Iowa Wrestling fans, and I take it as a compliment that they read my posts.

I have always been positive and respectful and plan to keep it that way. I actually took some real pride in the recruit's Top 5 being with former Iowa Wrestlers that I am proud to say that I am a fan of and that I stood and cheered for in Carver Arena many times. Several of those coaches are friends on my new venture in Facebook and I hold those former Hawks in high regards and respect. You cannot go wrong with that list because a Hawkeye that I used to cheer for will be in the corner. Out of respect for the those coaches, I have removed the line in question from the interview.

I am not controlled by anyone and certainly not paid anything. I simply love Iowa Wrestling and I am flattered that people want to read what I have to offer. There are people all over the world now reading my Iowa Wrestling blog because of Facebook. I have asked for a Friends request on Facebook from college coaches, former wrestlers, current wrestlers, and parents of wrestlers from every program I could find. The direct competition of Iowa Wrestling. I want to promote wrestling.

I am not going to "Take my ball and go home" as the saying goes. I will adapt and move forward. I have had my eyes opened from Facebook to how big wrestling is in this country and around the world and I want to be apart of that.

However, I will make adjustments to my interviews. I am also a big fan of so many of you on this board and that had some influence on me as well.

Thank you.

It's great to be an Iowa Wrestling Fan.

Todd Conner
