Austin O'Connor interview

I think as long as Ohio State and Hump are speaking in generalities than it is kosher. If a specific athlete were mentioned than no longer kosher.

As long as they are just steering recruits in general as a goal, then no big deal ;)

Most top club and high school coaches that have ties to a college steer them whether directly or indirectly. Nothing new here.

Do you think that getting the Moore bros, St John, Leclere, JayBo, Slaton, Carew, etc. had nothing to do with Reiland or the Ubasa club?

In state kids don't really need to be steered to Iowa.

It could also have something to do with the fact all of those you mention grew up a half an hour or less from Iowa City and 2 (Moore bros) of them had a cousin that was a national champion at Iowa.

I just noticed this now and I know a lot of people think Austin is a long shot to commit to Iowa, but he took 3rd in the 66kg bracket at the UWW World Team Trials placing ahead of some tough competitors including Iowa's own Vince Turk.

I would post the link but I hate figuring out the links on track. If there is interest maybe someone could help out and put it up.

He's a true blue chipper. I think he'll be much bigger though. He's wrestling 152 this weekend so could end up being a 57.

I agree with him being a true blue chipper. I coached Austin briefly at the youth level way back in the day on a freestyle club team and even then you could tell he would be something special.

I have no inside knowledge at all yet, but I would assume Illinois is probably the front runner at this point in time. His friend and team mate (Jake Silzer, 4x state placer) is committed there and his current head coach at St. Rita is an Illinois alum. I have to imagine Heff and Perry are going after AOC pretty hard as they catch a lot of message board flak for letting so many high school blue chippers end up going out of state for their college careers. Personally, I would love to see him strap on the black and gold and I think his style fits in perfectly with Iowa. I just don't know how hard TnT and M* are pursuing him with 157 and 165 being pretty set for the next 4-5 years. If was was projected as a career 149 however he would slide in nicely after a redshirt when Sorenson finishes up.

As far as weight goes, he wrestled 145 for the Scholastic Duals in April and had a pretty good showing.

145 RESULTS
Austin O'Conner of Illinois Outsiders went 7-0
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Jaden Mattox (Ohio Mafia) Dec 9-5
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Joel Arney (Indiana Gorillas) Maj 26-13
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Kasper McIntosh (Indiana Gold) Fall 5:10
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Kenny Kerrn (Indiana Blue) TF 22-6
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Clayton Jones (Indiana Renegades North) Fall 2:24
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Gabe Dinette (Colorado) Dec 3-1
145 - Austin O`Connor (Illinois Outsiders) over Unknown (Unattached) Forf

Hopefully we get to see him in action against some studs ones freestyle begins. Anyone know what other hammers are at 152 at Junior Duals in either style?

I'm confused. This thread and Todd's interview took place after the trials.

This is just hear say but I heard he was a mizzou lean. No inside info though.

I haven't looked through the freestyle teams yet but the studs I can see from Greco at 152 are Quentin Hovis from Az and Matt Malcolm from IA:)

I do remember reading the Wicks from CA will be there for freestyle. He wouldn't be the favorite in that matchup.

Just made a couple calls. The favorite at this point is NC. Illinois and Mizzou also in the picture but currently he is Coleman Scott's to lose. That info is from a credible and very trusted source.

Sounds about right. That'd be a huge pickup for them.

Also, in assuming Wyatt Sheets will be at 152 for OK. He's a hammer.
