Back-up QB Tyler Wiegers

Not sure who tweeted it, believe Morehouse but it was said "he is ahead of where Vandeberg was when he had to come in an 09." Something along those lines.

Q. What have you seen from Tyler in the last couple weeks?
COACH FERENTZ: If there’s any good news, we rested C.J. during the bye week and gave Tyler a lot of work with our first group. He’s improving every day, which is great to see. I’m planning on C.J. being in there. That’s my plan, and I think that’s his plan, too. That’s not only this week but the rest of the season.

But Tyler is doing a good job. He is moving along. When he gets in there, he’ll do fine.

Q. I hate to draw this parallel of 2009, James (Vandenberg), very few reps, do you feel you’re in much better position now?
COACH FERENTZ: We’ve had more time to prepare, certainly. We didn’t rest Ricky at all. We just kept him going, like you always do.

With C.J.’s deal, we’ve rested him, I don’t want to say quite a bit, because that’s not accurate, but during the bye week we did certainly. Judicious with his reps right now, just like with anybody that’s got some injury issues.

So it’s given Tyler more of an opportunity to work with the first group. That’s always a healthy thing. Things look a lot different when you get into another huddle. He’s doing a good job. That’s a benefit of somebody being out, just kind of like Parker got a lot better when Drew had his elbow issue, too. Hopefully he’ll be a better player when he does get his opportunity.

He's got Steve Young's legs, Joe Montana's brain, Brett Favre's fearlessness, Jim McMahon's aggressiveness, Tom Brady's competitiveness, Ken Stabler's swagger, Terry Bradshaw's arm strength, Johnny Unitas' leadership, Dan Marino's precision accuracy, and Christian Ponder's matinee idol good looks.

That anyone is even starting ahead of him is utterly absurd. He will win 2 Heisman Trophies, as well as an Outland Trophy and at least one Groza award. He'll lead Iowa to two National Championships, be consensus All America twice at multiple positions simultaneously, throw for 31,000 yards and 191 touchdowns in college before going on to win 9 Super Bowls in the NFL while dating 11 supermodels at the same time. Eventually he will run for and win the 2028 Presidential election under the flag of the self-created "Sexy Dance Party Party". Yes, that's right 2028...because he also will have already succeeded in convincing Congress to amend the United States Constitution to allow him to become POTUS prior to turning 35.

Wait. Did you say Tyler Wiegers?

Sorry.

Doodle thought you said Bill Brasky?

Was pretty bad in the spring when I saw him, but has reportedly made lots of strides since then.

The lack or CJ practice I thought showed with CJ last week. He wasn't sharp early, but in the 2nd Q started to zone in better when he had protection.

The practice time for Tyler though is utterly priceless should the worst case happens with CJ.

When Michigan's starting QB got an owie against Minny last Saturday, Harbaugh sent in a kid who had not thrown ONE pass ALL season. He led Michigan to what turned out to be the game-winning TD with a nice TD pass, then a 2-point conversion.

No excuses for not having the backup QB ready to play by this time in the season.

Yep, but was a bright spot in the open practice.

Supposedly has a good and accurate arm. Hope to not find out for a couple of years.

Seemed like Stanzi was ready when his number was called. Wiegers was a pretty good get. From what I've heard he has a strong arm, but might not be as mobile as C.J. I'm sure he'll be ready to go when we need him. (just hopefully after we're up 30!)

This begs a question that has always bothered me...is a starter at 50-60% better than a backup at 100%?

It all depends on the backup, Until you see them under the gun in real meaningful game action you just don't know. T.W. could come in and do a fantastic job, Or he could be completely overwhelmed by the circumstance, You have no way of knowing until it happens.

All I've heard is that Boyle is the 2nd best quarterback but we aren't pulling his redshirt, which could be more of a reflection of how good Boyle is rather than Wiegers being bad, but I hope to hell we don't have to see Wiegers unless it's in mop up of a blowout.

Just curious, but where or from whom have you heard that Boyle is the 2nd best QB?

All I've heard is that our 4 star redshirt freshman QB has made great strides since Spring.

He probably heard that from Boyle's friends and family back in DSM. I think TW will be just fine if called on. In very limited action this season, TW audibled to a pass and made the completion. That tells me he has a pretty good grasp of the offense and what KF/GD are trying to do.

Q. Ryan Boyle wasn’t on the field Saturday. Is there a reason for it?
COACH FERENTZ: Yeah. Wasn’t dressed, you mean?

Q. Right.
COACH FERENTZ: Dressing is a privilege. Our guys earn the right to dress. Simple as that. We have criteria you have to meet every week to get there. If guys don’t meet that criteria, they don’t dress out.

From what players and coaches have said it sounds like Wiegers has come a long way since the spring and that he would be ready if called on. I think Davis said something to the effect that Wiegers knows the offense well now and could get the offense in the correct calls etc. I think as a recruit he was known for his great accuracy. Seems like he has a decent arm as well.

No way. IMO, Boyle is a big project at QB. Mostly due to his arm. I'd be very surprised if he ever gets meaningful snaps other than due to major injury issues. I am sure he is a fine young man and I know he is supposed to be a good athlete but I see a smaller version of AJ Derby.

ON the one roll out he ran against NW, I though he looked rather quick. He also hit the TE in stride on the play, so there's that.

I've seen bits of practices over the past couple weeks. He has certainly looked better than he did in the spring. Decent zip on the ball and he's a little more mobile than I remembered. Never took off and ran with it that I saw.

I highly doubt this is true

I saw Boyle in high school, he was a running back playing QB. I would be shocked if he stays as a QB. Weigers came from a big HS in Michigan. Would not be surprised if he follows Beathard as starter and Boyle and Cook either leave or switch positions.

I've posted the same thing here over and over. Nobody here listens (or wants to hear it). Kid is simply NOT a traditional QB. He would be potentially great in a different system, but with Iowa he just doesn't fit right in my opinion. I'm sure he could have had other offers, so I never understood it. I don't know him personally though, so maybe it was a dream of his to be a Hawkeye.

He seems to me to be much like the QB from N Illinois a couple yrs ago that gave us fits. Athletic, could run, threw well enough to keep you honest.

That doesn't fit in Iowa's playbook. N Illinois, Kstate maybe. Not iowa.

I think it is way too early to write off either Cook or Boyle as a QB. Maybe Boyle can turn into what everybody hoped Jake Christensen would be.

Iowa has the read option in the playbook, and would actually use it if Boyle was the guy.

I think ICU hit the nail on the head when he compared him to AJ Derby. Very similar situation IMO. I am not writing off either him or Cook. What I do not understand is why so many think one of those two is simply going to be the next QB and writing off Weigers. Weigers isn't exactly chopped liver (dating myself).
