Badara Diakite Decommits

I expected pretty much all of the recruits to decommit. We needed a fresh start and McCollum has proven he can rebuild a program very quickly, and more importantly, he can sustain it. I understand the B1G is a whole different level but I've a feeling he's something special.

If we didn't have BM, I'd be worried but we do so we're lucky. The players he chooses will be better for his system and will buy in. He's a proven winner and this is his dream job. He's going to get us going and has plenty of time to do it before next season starts. He seems like the kind of guy that can make low-end 3 / high end 2 stars competitive with his scheme. We will be competitive at the very least. In 3-4 years, I feel like very few of us will be questioning anything in the b-ball program simply because he's there.

The guy just has that "it" factor. He was the coach I never knew we needed until just a short time ago. I'm all in on this man. We'll get some guys and they will be competitive. I could be wrong but I just really feel like this was a program changing hire for the better.

Rant over.

I was initially excited about Diakite after seeing a highlight reel, so I decided to watch a full game of his. I was unimpressed. On offense he floated on the perimeter the whole time. In general he lacked the strength to have a big impact inside, even against high school kids.
That doesn’t sound like a Fran recruit at all!

Really good article. The cutting action, from all points in the half court offense, is really precise.

There were also quotes about the BM hiring from the coach that use to be at Emporia State, Todd Doty. They were a D2 powerhouse and regularly played Ben’s Northwest Missouri State teams. To summarize, he said Ben is one of the game’s elite teachers of team defense, great at improving guys’ shots, is an absolute PG whisperer, and gets more out of his players than anyone he has ever coached against. He also said that Ben hoards his secrets and you won’t see him at coaching clinics talking about what he teaches. I was buzzing with good vibes and excitement.

If you watched MSU and Ole Miss last night, I totally agree. Man, that was a defensive battle. Both teams rebounded, played in your face defense and made their free throws.
At least this year, and in most years, officials are letting a LOT of contact go on. If you aren't tough enough to play through contact , then you are not going to win. This was true in every game I watched. It sure impacted Goldin for UM. He was taken totally out of his game by Auburn's bigs.

Not shocking on any of these losses. If you signed up with Fran then most likely you like to run and gun and don't have a great interest in playing defense. New guy comes in and talks toughness, commitments, being good at defending, etc. I look at it as the guys de-committing as not willing to work as hard.

I surely hope so. He’s only been in D1 for a single season. I know to us he’s a celebrity, but I guarantee most recruits have not heard of this guy nor Drake.
And what did they hear about Fran? How his teams are always in the battle for Big Ten titles? How his teams are always threats to make runs in the NCAA tourney? Or did they hear that you will probably lose a lot of games, but you'll probably score a lot of points, and that's what they were looking for? If you don't want to play for McCollom, that's your problem.

OTOH: Have they heard McCollom has won four national titles and won Drake's first NCAA game in over 50 years this season while going 31-4 with four D-II players and a castoff from that powerhouse Wyoming?

Good luck to the guys who choose to go somewhere else. I have no more interest in them than they do in Iowa. I'll be just fine with whoever McCollom puts on the floor because I know he'll get the best out of them and I know they'll play defense and rebound like hell. That suits me just fine.

If Ben wants him he will recruit him.

I am not worried about who ends up on our 13 scholarship roster.

The only things we should be concerned about is winning and a great product where the fans come back and fill Carver.

15 scholarship roster for 2025-26.

Otherwise, agree.

Iowa and BM can do better than 3-star/2-star players. More importantly, I think he will.
I agree. I'm just saying that he would turn those guys into something even if his ambitions recruiting-wise are understandably higher now. He may need a couple of those guys for the start at least.

There are over 1000 players in the portal, with at least ONE YEAR OF EXPERIENCE. Why bother with HS anymore.
With that said, what are some of these high school kids that are say 3 star and even lower level 4 star recruits going to do? Will they have to resort to UNI or Drake.? Showcase there skills and hope they can get a better offer/deal from a P5 school as a sophomore? Those are players we used to recruit, but with the portal on steroids with plentiful options you look there instead. It’s crazy!

Slightly OT: I assume Diakite was given some NIL "assurances". With a coaching change the does collective (Swarm in this case) need to honor those commitments? With so many players in the portal seems like it might not be the best time to de-commit.
??? Why would they have to "honor the commitment" to a player who never shows up on campus?

Why would anyone sign up for that when they can get millions from Kansas or Illinois? ;>)

So like most of Fran's 3-5 players.

I meant if Diakite didn't de-commit and stepped on campus this fall. He would be guaranteed a 1 year ( at least) scholarship due to signing his letter of intent. Wondering if some sort of contract was signed for NIL $.
