Barta inducted to hall of fame

Gary was a very good fundraiser. While he had some blips, some of the things he had to deal with never became public. Eventually they did become very, very public, but his part is trying to prevent that never became public, and he never received credit for this. He took a lot of criticism, some deserved, some entirely undeserved.

Gary was a much better AD than the haters on this site will ever admit.

A lot of inside baseball, and some of it never played out until 2023. But that's the job, and that's why they get paid as much as they do. You watch the pay. You watch the NIL / House Settlement and the direction he B1G and SEC tried (and try) to steer it. You always watch the money. It certainly "appears" there are competing interests. It more than "appears" from my perspective, but that's all I really have to say about it.

Well he certainly did have to handle a lot of adversity, mostly of his own creation.
Tried passing along the AD lady with average reviews hoping she would land a job elsewhere, but she was never hired by anyone else. Have seen that a number of times elsewhere in the world. Better to be real during employment reviews.

never should have let him go... that man knew how to act like an AD... he knew what integrity means..
he knew how to handle adversity.. he knew Iowa.
Translation: gave daddy-in-law a lifetime contract on his way out the door so he is the GOAT

Hi Mrs Barta, how are you?

You mean like the discrimination lawsuit that Iowa lost thanks in large part to him which cost the university millions? The same man who hired Todd lickliter?
Dude you can't go back and do the deal way after the fact. Lickliter was deemed a great hire at the time. Go back and read the stories and the forums as any existed then. He had been very successful where he was.

The University has insurance that covers discrimination suits. If you are in business, you know this. He f'ed up by just basically doing what most schools do now and give higher grades passing kids along in hopes one day they leave. Basically, what he did with her and then no one else would hire her and she wouldn't go away.

And didn't Gary hire Beth?!??!?!??!!?

He effed up by being pathetically negligent by not documenting anything or having any backup information regarding discipline.

Man made a lot of mistakes but he fundraised well and got it right with the north endzone. Glad he is gone and not handing out Oprah style extensions when not deserved or firing people without proper documentation but that’s also on the UI lawyers for green lighting the firing of Meyers and Gresbalm. Add in dumping men’s swimming and diving during Covid. Seemed to take the easy way out in things instead of doing the hard work in the closing years.

We have a real AD now that has bigger stones than he ever did.

How'd he handle the women issues?

Todd Lickliter national coach of the year. Barta in the Hall of Fame. That should tell you all you need to know about awards. Sometimes they go to the most deserving. Many times they do not.

Butler Bulldogs

[edit]
In May 2001 Lickliter was named Butler University's 20th men's head basketball coach, replacing Thad Matta, who accepted the same position at Xavier University. During his first season, Lickliter led the Bulldogs to a then-school record 26 victories and third consecutive Horizon League regular season championship. They also cracked the Associated Press Top 25 rankings for the first time in 53 years. The following year the Bulldogs surpassed their previous season's win total, finishing 27–6. Lickliter's 53 wins during the first two years of his head coaching career rank third best in Division I history, behind Bill Guthridge (58 wins) of North Carolina and Everett Case (55 wins) of North Carolina State. During his six years as head coach, he owned the top three single-season win totals in Butler basketball history and led the Bulldogs to the postseason four times, including two appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16. In April 2007, the National Association of Basketball Coaches named Lickliter the National Coach of the Year.[2] CollegeHoops.net also named Lickliter the High-Major Coach of the Year.[3]

Oh and the Tiger Hawk on the water tower! Remember the buzz buzz about that.

Not everyone thought it was a home run hire. Guy was a bust and Iowa b-ball hit rock bottom under him. Barta was the boss and he made the hire and was one responsible for that dreadful era. If he would’ve made final 4 I’m sure barta would be taking all the credit. Do the GMs who drafted Ryan leaf or Jamarcus Russell get a pass because at time they were considered great draft picks? Of course they don’t. people lose jobs all the time for hiring people with good resumes that are a bad fit for the current job and have a poor work performance. That’s part of being a supervisor.

So you’re saying it’s not Barta’s fault and not that big of a deal thing that he botched a discrimination lawsuit. That losing millions and bad publicity wasn’t a bad thing. Gotcha.

The university wss sued by the former field hockey Coach and lost
They settled, which is always the AG's recommended action. They are largely risk adverse on the civil side. Similar to the football suit. About the best anyone on here can do, excepting a couple of posters (maybe), is look at the size of respective settlements.

One of the larger mistakes, and it wasn't Gary's mistake, was how the investigation into the parties happened. Should have been an independent investigation, not a U of I investigation given the seriousness of some of the accusations against the former employees.

All my previous posts on here stand as posted, notwithstanding the replies.
