Anybody have any insight on when they will be released? I assume we're still looking at conference only, and a release a few weeks prior to the season similar to other sports?

I listened to a podcast with Iowa SB Asst Coach Prater and another podcast with Wisconsin Head Coach Healy.

Neither gave specifics, but Prater made a reference to being thankful we have a lot of pitchers because of the number of games we'll be playing and then said something about 4 games a season. I assumed she meant 4 games a series so it might be possible we'd play 4 games per each conference series.

The interviewer asked Healy about conference games only and the possibility to travel south two weekends. She talked about chartering planes and looking into bubble formats. I took that to mean there may be two weekend B1G teams could be in a bubble down south to get more games in. I assume chartering a plane would be requirement (or bus?).

Neither were definitive but my takeaway was probably a conference slate with more games in the series and some "non-conference" games with conference foes in bubble environments.

I was hoping they'd allow a handful of non-conference games similar to basketball. Even if it's just a few midweek games with the likes of Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, and Creighton.

I was as well, FBnBB4Life. Maybe they still will as neither coach said definitely what would happen. In both sports you have social distancing except in limited moments. It seems as it is one of the safe sports to play.

I believe it was @ChiDoc on the football board saying outdoor sports when being played are virtually 100% safe. I had to tag him in this, but I don't want to misquote either.

I didn’t say 100% safe, but fresh air and sunlight are known disinfectants that kill the virus and you are orders of magnitudes safer outside than indoors. We’ve known this for over 100 years. The 1918 flu pandemic was actually much deadlier than COVID and treatment was moved outdoors in many cases. Patients recovered much faster and far fewer doctors and nurses then became infected Despite close contact with the seriously infected. It really illustrates how incredibly stupid our politicians are to mandate indoor lockdowns.

Not to derail the thread, but my son opens his season by playing seven college baseball games in Phoenix in late January. They just announced that due to COVID no visitors will be allowed to attend. Unbelievable.

In softball during the Blevins era, the Hawks normally played conference double headers on both Saturday and Sunday, and normally had only two pitchers on the roster. Usually our #1 was pretty good, and was the #1 during all 4 years at Iowa, freshman to senior. The #1 would start and usually finish the first game both Saturday and Sunday. The #2 would start the second game, and often be relieved by the #1.

Even today it's not uncommon in the WCWS to rely on two, or even one pitcher. So I don't see that it's necessarily an advantage to have a lot of pitchers in softball, although it does provide insurance in case of multiple injuries.

Baseball was also Saturday/Sunday Conference double headers, but half the roster might be pitchers. Things could get unpredictable by the Sunday second game, especially if either/both of the Saturday starters had to pulled early :)

I was looking at other teams softball 2021 schedules online and saw this on the UMKC 21 schedule. Looks like they are playing at the OSU tournament mid-March and Purdue is on the schedule. If accurate this would indicate some non-conference games for the B1G.

2021 OKLAHOMA STATE INVITE

That would be much needed for baseball and softball. Even if it's ten games.

I might be doing something wrong, but I don't see any 2021 softball schedule info for either Okie St or Purdue on their sites.

I'm not understanding what the problem is for setting baseball/softball schedules, given that FB, MBB & WBB are all conducting their seasons, though granted that there have been interruptions for covid. MBB and WBB have both successfully held non-conference games. VB has their spring schedule set, granted conference only. UNI and FCS football has their schedule set. What's the holdup?

Row55, I saw the tournament on the UMKC site. You're correct neither Purdue or Okie State have their schedules published. I included the link below. UMKC still has a lot of TBD but Purdue was listed for March 19.

Wisc coach Healy said in her podcast B1G was working on fall sports schedules played in the spring first then would get to the spring sports. This a was a couple weeks ago and the volleyball schedule has come out since.

FBnBB4Life, I agree. I'm in the DFW area and North Texas has their SB schedule posted hosting a couple tournaments. Their schedule looks "pre-covid normal" SB and BB are "socially distant" sports. Dumb not to have non conference games especially for northern school.

Go Hawks!!

OK, thanks Uptown.

I'd quit going to the Ultimate College Softball forum due to too many cranks, but there's a thread there for conferences & teams that have posted schedules

Same for me Row. I gave up on ultimate college softball a couple years ago.

I'm hopeful this is accurate and means SB will get to have some non-conference tournaments.
