I know the football season is not over but I've always been more a basketball fan than football for Iowa.
Anyway, this year Iowa faces a preseason ranked Cyclone club at Ames with its 4 seniors, a short bench of experienced talent and a shorter than normal club with only one 6'9" guy (Jameel McKay). ISUcc will probably play the "trade a basket" shooting uptempo game that has blown Iowa out because Iowa is not had the best 3 point shooting teams in the past. ISUcc always has some guy who comes off the bench and has the game of his life and torches the nets with 3 pointers like never before (i.e. Dustin Hogue, Naz Long, Abner Nader). Niang will get double figures regardless and Monte Morris will their next most reliable scorer. McKay played after the noncon season, so Iowa did not see him but his is their best shot blocker. Matt Thomas can be hot and cold. Deonte Burton is a transfer (surprise, surprise).
Iowa will bring its four seniors (Woody, Gesell, Uthoff, Clemmons) also. Gesell needs a solid interior game play to open his shot up. Uthoff will be the best player on the floor (talent wise). If Woody can control the boards, play 25 minutes and score 10 points while not fouling out, he will have played well (IMO). Clemmons needs to play solid defense and not force bad shots to be effective. Jok must play the hero to help Uthoff fend off ISUcc's onslaught offensive game. If someone can dribble drive effectively to the basket and collect fouls, Iowa can win. I did not get to hear how much Uhl improved this summer but I hope he took a big step forward. Uhl is quick footed and very athletic. The Ellingson, Moss, Fleming outside shooting attack may be a big difference maker. Iowa still needs to control ISU to under 80 points. Johnny is dead, let the magic die, too.
I believe that now that Father Flanagan Hoiberg is gone and Iowa is getting better talent, this series can return to Iowa's favor. I just want the tide to turn this year.
