Report on TOS says Ben McGilmer, a key member of Ralph Miller’s 1970 6 pack championship team, has passed away. An Army vet who came back to Iowa and finished his education and career with the Hawks. That team had several high profile players but IMO, they do not have the success they achieved without Ben and his stellar play. Best wishes and condolences to his family and many friends.

Ben was the first supersub in my Hawk memory...a key member of my greatest Hawk bb team...RIP big guy!

Would have easily won the “sixth man of the year” award had there been one back then. As a student, I loved watching him play in the old field-house, even from behind the support column.

RIP Ben.

On a team full of stars, Ben was the role player and he played his role very well. Truly sorry to read of his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ben's family. All of the Hawkeye family will miss Ben.

I just saw this three years late:

...................................................................................................

I remember a couple of times when the game became tight and Ralph Miller would send Ben into the game.

Expectations would be high and the Field House would absolutely erupt with cheering and foot stomping!

He always delivered and with style.
