Betts and UCLA . . . still highly unimpressed

Betts is no athlete, just as I suggested prior to her visit to Iowa City. She's tall, and that's the beginning and the ending of her athletic "talent."

The rest of the cast? I saw nothing special from any of them, although they are decent at lobbing the ball really, really high to the tallest player on the floor, so there's that.

It would be interesting if Iowa were to face this bunch again in the NCAA tourney with officials who might know what the hell a foul is or is not, and what traveling is and is not. That would be interesting indeed.

Otherwise, screw USC and UCLA. May they get knocked out of the BIG and NCAA tourneys at the earliest opportunity.

They got the W at the toughest place to play in the women’s game.

Just sayin
Did they have any help? LOL

The striped shirts may as well have said "UCLA." You do know what happened after Iowa took that 12-point lead, right? Iowa was called for about 8 fouls to UCLA's zero in the third quarter. All UCLA had to do was approach the basket and the whistle blew. Meanwhile Iowa was shooting through half a dozen arms and, incredibly, no foul.

And some folks might point to the trip on the last possession that wasn't called and the "foul" that was, gifting the game to UCLA with 3.8 seconds left.

Just sayin

I thought Betts lived up to her billing. She was a good passer out of the post, made some tough catches and had good touch around the rim.

Rice had two dagger 3s but outside of that she and the rest of the team were pretty underwhelming.
I'd say your evaluation of Betts is mighty generous. She's at least 3 inches taller than anybody Iowa has. She gets the ball deep and fires an overhead pass outside. If you think that's a talent, good for you. And shooting layups over players far shorter doesn't seem like that great a talent to me. But what the hell do I know . . . I'm only a 6-footer. But then I will give her credit for swinging a mean elbow into her defenders. She is good at that.

Oh they had help. No argument.

I thought the officiating was egregious but unfortunately that seems to be the norm in the women’s game.

4 inches she's listed at 6-7.

She’s ok, but very stilted. She’s big and does pass well, I’d agree. In fact w/out her, they are very average 🤷‍♂️

Why diminish the quality of the team that just beat Iowa? UCLA lost once this year and survived today with the skin of its teeth. They are a final four caliber team.

I agree with your sentiment about denigrating a foe, but I’ll wager w/you about the final four. She is the team, without her they are not the same and she will get in trouble in the tournament eventually.

22 points and 12 rebounds, 9-12 from the field. She's a dominating presence on both ends. Of course if you take her off the team they're not as good, she's a 1st team All American. She was the reason we had to go to zone, she was basically scoring every time in the post in the 3rd quarter and brought them back. And if they doubled she hit the open man. And saying she's only good because she's tall is ridiculous. If it was only because she was tall why isn't every tall girl dominating like her? Give them credit. Hawks played a great game yesterday, really struggled to score in the 4th qtr as UCLA clamped down on us. We played great defense as well. Terrible call at the end but unfortunately that happens.

Put it to you this way - a 6'7 girl is probably equivalent to a 7' plus male from an "athletic" standpoint. Don't expect her to dazzle you with her running and jumping. She got up and down the court just fine. If she was on this current Iowa team, it would be top 10 at worst.

I agree with you on her passing. Some of the most open 3's are after it gets kicked back out. Our bigs struggle with that.
