Biden Administration Withdraws Studen Loan Forgiveness Plans

GOP this month:

Against loan forgiveness (excuse me, against only *student* loan forgiveness)

But pro-Gaetz, the alleged rapist and sex trafficker that Trump wanted to make the A ****ing G of the US.

Well done.

Damn right we don't want student loan forgiveness. Pay back your debts (I know the lefties here aren't fans of the idea of paying debts based on gohox bet welching thread)

The gaetz stuff is an obvious nothing burger. The Biden doj also agrees with my assessment.

Anything else? No comment on Biden not delivering yet again?

We want people to pay back their debt? This is new.

PPP gets a pass. Bankrupt individuals get a pass. Bankrupt corporations like Trump’s dozens get a pass.

But the GOP is doing the Lord’s work here and should be very proud sticking students with their debt in order that corporations and individuals can shed their debt.

I know this may shock you, but I also hate the PPP loan forgiveness, and the fact that it benefited the family members of congress (democrat and republican) makes it even worse. This thread isn't about that though lol

Yes, the students made a financial decision and should pay it back. Can't say I'm impressed by your system of "forgive all loans" that you seem to be championing.

I’m not championing that. I’m saying that their loans should be treated in bankruptcy like every other loan - dischargeable under certain circumstances.

I’m tired of people - many of whom pocketed millions in PPP and farm aid - lecturing students on the importance of repayment.

PPP get a pass because governments shut down businesses or otherwise limited businesses. Apples and oranges.

It was never part of the ppp contract to pay it back if they used it for payroll. If someone committed fraud with the ppp $$$ they should be charged fraud.

Apples and oranges comparing it to student loans.

If it makes you feel better I didnt get to pocket money from either one of those things. The bankruptcy to absolve the debt is another convo and I'm sure we'd probably come close-ish to a middle ground there. I'm just not for blanket elimination of debt. The loans shouldn't be so predatory either. I'd be open to a full pause on the interest (can be paid via taxes on university endowments) so only the original bill requires pay back.

Facts are facts. PPP was also passed overwhelmingly by congress. Bidens student loan forgiveness wasn’t.

Comparing the 2 is pretty ridiculous.

Then eliminate the PPP from the argument and tell me why everyone under the sun can discharge loans in bankruptcy - except for students?

‘Ol Sleepy Joe failed on another promise. This failure is a good one for everyone, thankfully.

It’s actuality it’s nearly impossible.
Not really. These are the debts that are nearly impossible.

Not all debts can be discharged through bankruptcy, including child support, alimony, certain unpaid taxes, and more. Income tax debt is also very difficult, though not impossible, to get discharged. Most loan debt can be alleviated through bankruptcy.

In some cases, you can have your federal student loan discharged after declaring bankruptcy. However, discharge in bankruptcy is not an automatic process.

Some students used to graduate and immediately declare bankruptcy. Their credit score would get dinged, but a new graduate wasn't going to take out a mortgage for years, anyway.

Also, taxpayers have to pick up the burden for unpaid student loans. If these were arranged through private financial institutions, I'd be fine with the lenders bearing the risk of borrowers declaring bankruptcy.
