WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Democratic philanthropist George Soros and actor-director Denzel Washington will be awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor on Saturday in a White House ceremony.

President Joe Biden will bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 of the most famous names in politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy and science.

The White House said the recipients have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”

Four medals are to be awarded posthumously. They are going to Fannie Lou Hamer, who founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and laid the groundwork for the 1965 Voting Rights Act; former Attorney General and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy; George W. Romney, who served as both a Michigan governor and secretary of housing and urban development; and Ash Carter, a former secretary of defense.

Kennedy is father to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for health and human services secretary. Romney is the father of former Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, one of Trump’s strongest conservative critics.

Soros helped the Nazis

During the Holocaust, in an intensely antisemitic, fascist, murderous and Nazi-allied Hungary in 1944, Soros was a teenager. He went with a non-Jewish friend of his father to inventory the contents of Jewish homes in preparation for confiscation of belongings.

Much later in America, Soros was blamed for this anti-Jewish act and expressed no shame or regret. He stated that if he didn’t participate in the inventories, someone else would have, hence there was no need to feel bad about it. By his insensitive logic, German, Japanese, and Russian soldiers could also have exclaimed that they don’t need to regret raping women, since if they didn’t, then someone else would have. When the inventory incident was revealed on an American radio or TV show, an American Jewish organization was quick to term it an antisemitic attack on Soros. I doubt that any reasonable Jew would agree with this characterization, especially those who had firsthand experience with that evil social disease.

My uncle was a bit older than Soros, in Hungary, but still a boy (only 17) during that time. The Nazis conscripted him and made him fight for the Germans. It was that or die in a concentration camp.

It's easy to judge people years removed from events on a warm and comfy couch. Unlike many of us, my uncle and Soros had to live through the nightmare of Nazi occupation.

Soros did what he had to do to stay alive. He didn't pull any triggers or abuse any women. He was a boy. It was literally "dog eat dog" back then, a time of comply and stay alive or be shot and buried in a mass grave.

I don't think Soros is proud of what he did, and he's probably adopted a cold and pragmatic view of his own actions as a coping mechanism. I don't agree with the man's politics (at all), but I won't pretend that I'm qualified to judge him.
