I'm wondering the possibility of the Big 12 demise coming more quickly than expected. Its rather obvious that Oklahoma wants out. Texas probably could careless. But could it be possible that the Baylor Mess may give the Sooners the opportunity to leave without the financial damage that could come with it? I understand the grant of rights contract is just over 4 pages long and is loaded with ambiguity. I'm wondering if the Baylor issue may factor into dissolving the contract due to the possibility of them being kicked out of the league or a death penalty situation. If I were Oklahoma I would be seriously looking at that angle from a legal standpoint.

Baylor is not getting kicked out of the league and there won't be a death penalty.
The league wants to expand except for two schools. I imagine the expansion comes in the next two years. The problem Texas has is that no other league will give them as much power as the Big 12. If you think they are struggling right now in the Big 12, try to go to the SEC and see what happens. They are just holding out and using their bargaining power for as much as they can get. But I don't think it is going to work this time. I don't think OU truly wants out. It is not like the Pac 12 is some great place right now. Their network isn't exactly flourishing so I doubt they could get more money. The best option for all the teams is to stay in the Big 12.

I disagree. The Big 12 is dead. I think OK is trying to figure out an early exit.

I agree, Paednoch. That conference is finished. OU leaving is the last thing it needs. OU leaving will be the nail in the coffin. There isn't another school that could fill the amount of space left by Oklahoma that would have an interest in moving there. IMO.

How awesome would the Meltdown be if Oklahoma went to the Big 10?

Of course I'm not sure they meet the academic requirements or not. But I think they would be a good addition. Add them and Kansas and be done and watch ISU got to the MAC

In the meantime I find the whole scenario and possibilities just delicious. Tingly delicious

Why? It is a sad state of college athletics that all these changes are happening because of ridiculous amounts of money when they are supposed to be non profit entities. They are generating tons of money, yet the actual universities don't see any of it and the cost of going to college is continually going up and up. Meanwhile, they won't let student athletes see any of the money, won't let them make money off their likeness, etc and generally afford them as little rights as possible.
In addition, it is this kind of ridiculous money that causes people to overvalue the football programs causing stupid people to cover up crimes like the ones at Baylor and Penn State all to protect their moneymaker.
You have coaches having sleep overs at recruits houses and creating insane amounts of satellite camps that make these recruits feel even more entitled.

When some of their Presidents say that they don't need to expand and a network isn't that important, yeah, I can agree with you.

The commissioner is already on record as stating that expansion is not needed. This may be a decision that is made as much for the big xii as by the big xii if they continue to try to ignore it. The other major conferences will not forever stand idly by and play by rules/standards different from everyone included in the potential football playoff picture. There is so much at stake and only four spots for what is not a five conference pool, something will happen to even the field.

Longterm, Iowa should want this. 25 years after that, ISU won't be able to get 30k in their stadium. Iowa will either have to get creative with Kinnick with the higher ticket demand or build a completely new stadium.

Well, you either need to quit watching or live as a hypocrite.

Yeah I dont get why some ppl in other threads are acting like ISU to MAC is bad for Iowa? How could being the only P5 football program in the state be a bad thing?

Iowa being the only P5 school in this state can be nothing but good for U of I. There is simply no reason to think otherwise. It would be extremely beneficial for Iowa.

Re OU

Oklahoma president David Boren, the Big 12 board chair, on what the league could seek in future members. "You want to look at, how do they fit athletically? What is their fan base? What media markets are they in? Where do they stand academically? Where are they? What's their level as a research institution? What's their level of teaching? To use a financial term, we want to make sure they're not diluting what I think is a very strong conference at the present time."

Oklahoma president David Boren on the Big 12's patient approach to expansion question: "Where does the data takes us and what strategy makes the best sense? This conference is so strong. We're not in a weak position; we're in a strong position. We'll evaluate all of that and also look at who the possible partners are. … I've tried to keep an open mind and I think that's the spirit of the conference membership. I would not want this group to be reporting four or five months down the road that this decision was made very carelessly."

Dave, you have to realize that among the people participating in this thread are a few who find the prospect of the Big XII dying to be a good substitute for Viagra and a lot cheaper. Don't try to talk logically about the subject. You and the Iowa fans who actually want to discuss it will quickly get drowned in the ejaculatory deluge.

Not a good way to go. Not at all.

Too much penis innuendo in this post for my liking.

The Big 12 is easily the most vulnerable of the P5 conferences.

However, it would not surprise me if Bowlsby was able to pull a Rabbit out of his hat and cobble something together before Texas burns the place to the ground on their way out.

Actually there're 3 teams that would vote against expansion, Texas, Texas Tech, and TCU. The conference needs 80% approval for expansion. With those 3 against it, that would block it.

I think the ACC would take Texas plus their baggage along with trying to get ND to join the football conference. The ACC bent over backwards to get ND to join the ACC with the exception of their football program. They did managed to get ND to play 5 ACC teams every year. It's even been rumored that the ACC is after Texas and ND to join in order to give the conference a much stronger prestige.

The big 12 also stated that each school received $30. 4 million from their tv contract this past year. If that is correct, then Texas pulled in 45.4 million from TV alone, they will go independent before they give up the LHN.

I don't think the Big XII is as vulnerable as the ACC.

The Big XII has voted to split into two 5-team divisions and hold a championship game next year (2017 season). I have mixed feelings about this, but it looks like a prelude to expansion.......as well as a flat-out money grub, of course, since it would dump another $30 million or so into the league coffers.

Yes, it guarantees a rematch. But rematches aren't that uncommon in other conferences at championship time. They just aren't guaranteed.

I personally think they would be better off not having divisions and going 1 vs. 2. But that's if NCAA would allow that.

I guess the NCAA has modified its initial ruling on the subject, so I don't know what the hell the current situation is. I don't think they should have a championship game, anyway.

OU does not fit in the B1G academically so they are working to enhance their academic posture right now.
