Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule

Not much margin there for Illinois and MSU. Wisconsin might be missing Brust's scoring from last year.

The one weakness for Wisconsin is that there doesn't appear to be much depth this year. If Kaminsky or Dekker gets into foul trouble they are beatable. I'm still not sold on Jackson or Gasser as their guards.

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule

Brust was a fine player, but Wisconsin lost less than any other team. Bo doesn't use a deep rotation. The Wisconsin guards aren't flashy, but they are very good players on both ends of the court.

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule

Early impressions from parts of games I saw:

PU: Impressive. Hammons and Haas are 14+ft 575lbs of mass in the middle. Most imposing inside group along with Minny and maybe Iowa. Really impressed with both of these bigs.
PU hit 9 of 16 from the arc while I was viewing....Kendall Stephens, and newbie frosh Vince Edwards look dangerous.
If they play like this, I put PU in the 4-6 region of the Big Ten....and could be a sleeper.

Wis.: Same old...good shooting from distance, smart defense , rebounding...etc.

Minny: Hung in there with Louisville, but never seriously threatened. Carlos Morris, newbie juco, looked good at times.
Louisville just a bit too talented, especiall preseason All American Harrell.....had 30 pts...pretty much unstoppable, inside and out....top 5 pick next spring.

One item to remember is that 5th year senior forward Duje Dukan was suspended for the first two games by the NCAA for playing in exhibition games during his redshirt year. He will be eligible to play starting on Wednesday, which gives UW a really strong top seven. I suspect Bo feels comfortable playing any of Kaminsky, Dekker, Hayes, Gasser, Jackson, Dukan and Koenig with minimal dropoff. Sophomore forward Vitto Brown was pretty solid in his first extended minutes in the two games this weekend, and I would expect him to be a regular contributor this season. Bo has almost always played a core of seven guys, occassionally going to #8 or #9 as needed. Brown and redshirt sophomore guard Zak Showalter are #8 and #9 for this year's squad. Frontcourt depth should be real good for this year's team, but I hope UW doesn't have to go to Showalter for too many meaningful minutes. At this point, he is best suited to be an energy/hustler off the bench for a handful of minutes as opposed to a guy you'd want to depend on to score.

Thanks Alum-NI.

Two thoughts. Beyond that at this point it is hard to measure much.

Michigan, Maryland, Purdue, Indiana and Penn State should send a thank you note to JIm Delany for scheduling them to play Rutgers twice. While Rutgers played their first game short handed with one of their best players injured, they just aren't ready for the Big Ten.

Michigan State is not what they usually are. Taking a career game from Spike Albrecht to pull out a victory over Navy? And, is there a team in the league that wouldn't like to give them a kick while they are down?

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule (thru 11/16)

Spike plays for Michigan, not MSU.

Thanks, meant Travis Trice.

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule (thru 11/16)

Looks like teams will be able to empty the bench against Rutgers. Feb 19th might be a good game to watch the future of Hawkeye basketball while the starters get a rest after about 12 minutes of shooting practice.

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule (thru 11/16)

Every year we speculate about teams that could go 0-18 (in the past it was us and Indiana, more recently PSU and NW, and now Rutgers). But I don't think we've had a 0-16 or 0-18 team for a very very long time. I'm sure Rutgers will pick off some unsuspecting poor team.

Agreed, I just hope it isn't our favorite team(s). I think the 1999-2000 season was the last time a team went winless in conference play (Northwestern at 0-16).

Did someone say Rutgers would win zero games?

I know I've seen quite a few fans on various B1G b-ball boards making predictions like that about them. Some of the pundits on BTN, ESPN, CBS Sports, etc. have also predicted a last place finish for Rutgers (although I don't think they went as far as to say they would go winless in conference play).

What kind of exhibitions are they talking about? I thought players could play in the regular exhibitions (like Iowa's Northwood exhibition) and still be able to red-shirt that year. At least someone said that when they talked about the possibility of Iowa's Baer redshirting this year.

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule

Early season games are hard to evaluate. Against most of the competition, Big10 teams should win by 20 or more points, depending on how they play their bench. Are they trying to win big, or build their depth for later games. Playing against top teams like Louisville does give you a gauge to measure, just like Texas will this week.

Thoughts: NW and Rutgers look weak on paper. PSU may be weak. MSU had a close game. Other teams look like they could be good...along wiht MSU (as always).

One thing that stands out for Wisconsin so far is their defense. They may not score alot of points this year but their defense will keep them in games.

You just described every Bo Ryan team in my memory, with the exception of last season.

Re: Big Ten Scores, Standings and Schedule (thru 11/18)

I don't think this UW team will have trouble scoring. They have a lot of experience to go along with versatility and shooting on the offensive end. With Nigel Hayes reportedly improved in the shooting department, UW's top seven now all have to be respected behind the 3-point line. Assuming they continue to share the ball like they did last season, they should be very good offensively this year. I know it's hard to believe, but UW only scored 62 against Northern Kentucky because NKU slowed the game down when they had the ball, taking the shot clock under 10 on many of their possessions. All that said, UW's defense has been really good so far, better than last season. They will be tested by a pretty good UW Green Bay team tonight.

You are generally correct, but it turns out you can only play in those exhibitions and retain the ability to redshirt when you are a true freshman. Duje was in his 3rd year when he played in the exhibitions and then redshirted because of mono. According to the NCAA, that meant he had to sit out the exhibitions this season plus the first two real games. He is back tonight.

I will fear Purdue more once I have seen that Hammons will show up for every game.

Nigel Hayes was good last nite....25 pts on 8 of 11 shooting, 2 of 2 from the arc...and 11 rebounds.

Dekker and Kaminsky also had 21 and 19 pts.

Seems like a well oiled machine up there now....damn!

Rutgers seem to be awful, is my assimption correct for anyone who has watched them? Northwestern is off to a slow start but that is to be expected with their young recruits. Alum - Ni what happened against Rhode Island? Penn State beat their equal of the pac12 I see.

Cold shootinog from the outside and a horrendous rebounding effort.
