Big Ten titles in 2017-18: Notre Dame 2, John Hopkins 1, Iowa 0 (54th in Directors Cup)

From the Gazette (http://www.thegazette.com/iowa-hawk...ampionships-johns-hopkins-notre-dame-20180703)

Of the 41 Big Ten tournament or regular-season championships in 2017-18, the final tally is this:

Michigan 11,
Ohio State 10,
Minnesota 5,
Maryland 3,
Illinois 2,
Michigan State 2,
Notre Dame 2 (men's hockey, reg season & tourney champions)
Penn State 2,
Indiana 1,
Northwestern 1,
Wisconsin 1,
Johns Hopkins 1 (men's lacrosse)
Iowa 0,
Nebraska 0,
Purdue 0,
Rutgers 0.

Iowa has 10 men’s and 12 women’s teams competing for Big 10 championships. Iowa had one Big Ten champ in 2016-17, the baseball team in the conference tournament.

Which brings us to the 2018 Learfield Directors Cup Division I final standings. That’s the all-sports point system used to determine how entire athletic programs stack up. Iowa was 54th. Which, as you might imagine, isn’t exactly where it wants to be. Especially since it ranked 13th of the 14 Big Ten schools.

Not much has changed, really. Iowa was 51st in 2016-17, 62nd in 2015-16. It was 12th-best in the Big Ten a year ago, but got passed by Michigan State this time around.

Rutgers was again a distant 14th. It was 107th nationally, an improvement of nine spots from last year.

Stanford, by the way, won its 24th-straight Learfield Cup. The school’s high academic standards don’t appear to be getting in the way of athletic success.

Michigan and Ohio State, at Nos. 6 and 7 nationally, respectively, were the two top Big Ten programs in the national standings. Not coincidentally, OSU was third in the NCAA in athletic revenue in fiscal year 2017, and Michigan was fourth. Iowa was 18th, fifth-highest in the Big Ten.

The Directors Cup standings:

Michigan 6th
Ohio State 7th
Penn State is 12th,
No. 19 Minnesota,
No. 22 Wisconsin,
No. 34 Northwestern,
No. 36 Illinois,
No. 39 Purdue,
No. 44 Nebraska,
No. 49 Indiana,
No. 50 Michigan State
No. 53 Maryland.
No. 54 Iowa
No. 107 Rutgers

Iowa State was 56th, sixth among Big 12 schools. It was 50th in the NCAA in revenue in fiscal year 2017.
Yeah, but Iowa men won that point thing at the Drake Relays.

I agree about the directors cup. Football and basketball are what matter to Big 10 schools. In Minnesota, they want to do well in hockey, however, because hockey is huge in this state. MN just made a coaching change in the off season.

Yeah, I think Mike was saying if you are 18th in the nation in revenue you should not be 54th in the nation in overall athletic dept performance.

The only thing I would add is I do think the Directors Cup shows how good the AD is overall. Barta is hiring and is responsible for all of these coaches, paying them decent salary, and paying for all of these kids' scholarships. There hasn't been much success/bang for the buck for several years now under Barta's leadership.

Look at the Heller hire and the excitement it has caused. People are actually going to the games and watching online.

I think people would get into women's volleyball if they got good, too. Volleyball can be a very fun sport to watch, especially when 2 good teams are playing. Hopefully Barta found the right coach there. Iowa softball used to be somewhat popular a while back; hopefully the new hire turns things around.
I remember when Pollard was hired, he said one of his goals was for ISU to finish in the top 50 of the Director's Cup, so it was significant to him; whether that's common among ADs or not, I have no clue. That's a fairly tall order for ISU because it fields the minimum number of sports to maintain its NCAA status.

I missed the reference in Mike's column to Iowa being 18th in revenue.

I don’t care about diving, golf, field hockey, wrestling, tennis, softball. I care about football and basketball. We’re struggling with those two sports. That is why we need a change.
Please explain how we are struggling in football. Thanks!

You're a funny dude. I thank you for thinking of me at 4 am (Geezus f*** I'll post at 3 am next time so it won't bother you as much.......) to provide a response so that there was in fact any form of a response. (Well it needed to be done.) Notice the lack of responses in support of GB. (I told you, nobody cares....) If the one guy who provided a response can be surmised as "I don't care about responding, but here is my response, he is not so bad that he has alienated a guy that bleeds black and gold" that is all the response needed. (It is. Now Barta can stay....;)) Fwiw this is the most accurate thing I have found to depict your responses here.

(I mean......everything I say is true. And, if we're being fair here, you have done a very poor job at refuting any truthful thing I've said. So yeah.....I win. :D)

Yes, yes we will. The guy is a waste of space with a golden goose.
I haven't mentioned this yet, but you are now basically resorting to admitting that you're only intention is to argue with people about how bad Gary Barta is, and that if nobody comes on here to defend him, then you feel justified in your criticisms of him..........I mean Hawkeye Report is a popular place and all and I know our approval is important to you, but again.........nobody cares.

I'm not looking for an argument at all, the thread(a place to voice ones opinion, is about the poor performance in the directors cup. I am of the belief Gary is a poor AD, this would in fact be the place to voice that opinion. If I were talking about how bad barta was in a thread about the offense, stadium, OOC, I could see the "you're looking for an argument" stance. All good man, hope you enjoyed the fireworks tonight.

Glad to hear your opinion on Barta, again, again and again. And oh yes, now you can get the last word in again, again and again.

I'm not looking for an argument at all (you would fight people to defend your position that Barta is a bad AD.....so dont lie), the thread(a place to voice ones opinion, is about the poor performance in the directors cup. ("I could see-"......Well see that's why I'm right. ;)) All good man, hope you enjoyed the fireworks tonight.
I didn't. It rained all evening.

Also, I'm not holding you hostage. You can leave this thread whenever you want......

When is the last time you saw someone wearing a ‘Directors Cup’ shirt or came across one for sale? Maybe I’m just running in the wrong circles.
Again, i don't think most care but I do think it gives an indication of where our overall athletic department stands.

Iowa baseball is fun again, finally.

A lot of the women's sports at Iowa, however, have struggled for a while now. Iowa is not getting much bang for the the buck for coaches' salaries, scholarships, etc. in those particular sports. If we are going to field 22 total sports, shouldn't we at least be competitive? And that's all on Barta and his vision/leadership/

You talk in circles. (You might also notice that prior to this post you and I had both posted 13 times in this thread however I had posted 4 or 5 times prior to your first post. If anyone seems to be unstable to leave the thread it is yourself) it's all good monkey, Gary wont last forever and eventually I will get my wish. Franisdaman, gets it. It isnt about being national champions in every sport, and I wouldnt expect fans on the football board to care about ladies soccer, but there is a fanbase and talent pool for ladies soccer in the state of Iowa and they are being severely wrong done by.

(Im guessing you made most of this up, because I literally made the 4th post in this thread......right after yours.) If anyone seems to be unstable to leave the thread it is yourself (It's not.)) it's all good monkey (Is it though?......), Gary wont last forever and eventually I will get my wish. (You're not talking about waiting him out though.......) Franisdaman, gets it. It isnt about being national champions in every sport (I didn't say that, but why shouldn't we be champions at everything?), and I wouldnt expect fans on the football board to care about ladies soccer (if there's pics they will.....), but there is a fanbase and talent pool for ladies soccer in the state of Iowa and they are being severely wrong done by. (anger affecting your grammar again, aside......how is the women's soccer team being done wrong by Barta, specifically?)

You would be guessing wrong it was 13 and 13 up until the previous post, I was in fact incorrect about you immediately posting. It is. While the idea of waiting him out had not been presented I still get what I want. Grammer nazi isn't your schtick. You love this thread Monkey, it gives you something to keep coming to.im tired of listing specifics so you can deflect all to hell. Barta is still really bad at his job and you still talk in circles. Now, I actually accepted a new Job today so I'm off to go celebrate. Enjoy your day monkey.

I’m not saying it’s bad to enjoy and root for the other non-marquee sports. I’m just not going to bang the drum for the directors cup and puff my chest out about it. Be good in the marquee sports of football and men’s basketball first. Then see what happens in the others in a 14 team conference.

Iowa's AD > other ADs.......because Iowa > everyone

Deal with it. :D

OSU and Michigan won half of the B10 titles between the two of them. What a shocker.
