Big Weekend for Cook Visit

He's not traveling via wagon so he shouldn't have to worry about fording any swollen rivers.

I invested time viewing some Tyler Cook video because I'm feeling it. Tyler is coming aboard!

Anyway, wow. I can see why Cook is a top 75 recruit. He's powerful with a mature body. Very explosive and outstanding foot work around the rim & taking the ball to the rack. I'm most blown away with how fluent he is using both his right and left hands. If he has developed his mid-range game (as Tyler's mom at least partially credits Fran for encouraging/coaching him up/offering advice per interview with Howe (or so I've heard second hand)), then he has an extremely potent arsenal to play at a very, very high level.

He's a total stud. I have to believe he will be an immediate and 4 year starter for IA.

I've heard this interview referenced a few times but haven't had the time to listen. Anyone want to provide a quick recap? Sounds like it's worth a listen at some point.

I keep trying to think of a similar type player as Tyler Cook on an Iowa team. Of course it is hard to judge from looking at videos from his Junior year in High School. But if I had to guess...I'd say the closest I can come up with is all these guys we used to say, "If only he were 6'9". Greg Brunner, James Winters, Kent Hill, Jared Cole. We've had a lot of athletic power forward types over the years that were undersized.

Now we may have one that isn't undersized. :) Too soon to say, but an even bigger version of Bruce King? (Who was 6'8", 225) That's the closest I'm coming up with.

Anyway, what I like about the video is this is a kid that understands you don't miss shots when the distance between your hands and the rim is zero! He goes up strong with guys around him.

That's something I mentioned in another thread, and it applies to BJ Duling also, he goes up intent on dunking. I like guys that dunk when the have the chance and are willing to go up, even in traffic, and throw down. That's as much mental as physical for guys that are 6'8.

I see him as a combination of Reggie Evans/Greg Stokes. Not that he is that talented but that is the type of game he has.

I see the bounce and explosiveness of Mesahn Basabe. The strength and relentless play of Reggie Evans with the footwork in the post of Greg Brunner.

As I mentioned, I didn't listen to it directly but these are the main points I heard from a friend (who did listen) about what Tyler's mom said...

1. Family is very important to them & they feel the staff/program is very family-oriented
2. Feel that the staff really have Tyler's best interests at heart and that too is very important to them
3. That is when she referenced Fran coaching Tyler up to extend his game to the mid-range

Now this is the part I don't know how much was directly stated vs implied vs my friend speculating based on her comments so take it FWIW...

The Cook family feels really good about the Iowa program, the staff, the university, Iowa City including proximity to St. Louis, etc. The main thing they want to accomplish with this trip is to see how well Tyler bonds with his potential future teammates and how the players feel about being part of the program.

How far is Arkansas from St. Louis? I know the drive to Iowa City is almost all four lane and an easy drive.
