Brackets have been released for he freestyle portion of this tourney. Notably, Dan Dennis is competing at 57kg. He's on the bottom side of the bracket and is slated to wrestle a Russian, Ilyasov in the first round. If he wins, he likely faces Alan Waters in the second round. Other notables in the field are Nick Simmons, Nate Tomasello, Obe Blanc, Tyler Graff, Brandon Precin, Andrew Horchstrasser and Sam Hazewinkel. This is the first I've seen Dennis down this low in weight, it should be interesting how he has adjusted to what must've been a brutal cut. To put in perspective that's like 7 1/2 lbs lighter than what he competed at in college! Insane! Only other Hawkeye related wrestler is Nathan's brother Micah (who I think is affiliated with HWC) is competing at 97kg. He's facing an American Josh Manu (not familiar with him) first round and then likely gets JD Bergman round 2.

Dennis fell behind Tomasello 2-0 and comes back for a 5-2 win. Has Graff next.

Frank "I Choose Down" Molinaro v. Pico, in progress.

Dennis got taken down really quickly, and IMO it looked like he had 2 exposure when he was defending it, but then Graff went right into a trapped arm and made it 8-0, then Dennis got his arm free and crawled forward a hair on the edge and they cautioned him for fleeing the hold 9-0. Then they went to par terre for the caution and Graff got one more gut to end it. Never really had the chance to come back.

Dennis wins in consi semis over Dan Mitcheff 12-2. Down 2-0 at half. Got TD and 5 gutwrenches to win in 2nd pd. 12-2. Faces winner of Tomasello/Naser for Bronze.

Where does he have to place to qualify for trials? I assume he's already done enough?
Only the top placing American (that earns at least a 3rd place finish) at each weight that hasn't already qualified earns a spot at the trials.
Graff was the qualifier at that weight.

Yeah, lol, how can you not like the kid. He's right there, I predict in two years he's the number one guy at his weight for team USA.

Just watched the last match against Frank...You can see he's still on the upswing and hasn't peaked. He's picked up a nice little sweep and a snatch single vs just snapping and reshots before.

Side note: Where in the hell did they hold this thing, the gym of a posh retirement home?

Tournament was held at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.

Yea PBS, I know...It seemed like a lot of old people in the background. More like a Jewish Community Center out in Yonkers or something.
Outside of the competitors/coaches there are not many interested in being in attendance of international styles tournaments. Especially minus the top Americans and double especially in Manhattan. I'm sure the tickets were a bargain :D

I'm pretty sure you said that 2 years ago..............................;)

Pico is very talented, no doubt, but I don't see how anyone can think he is going to improve enough to beat Metcalf in 5 months.

Agree with Flying_Tiger (which is pretty raree). Pico doesn't have the type of style that Metcalf tends to lose to. Hell, that wrestler from China (?) snapped Brent harder than I have ever seen anyone snap Metcalf and was tossing Brent around the mat and Brent still won. I think Brent takes it in 2016 but after that who knows.
