Lack of NIL resources making Iowa’s search for new men’s basketball coach more difficult

NIL was low because of Fran. It’s already going up because he’s gone, and will increase further if McCollum comes aboard.

I gave last year to Swarm, I wanted them to sign Perkins. This year I didn't give because it would have been money down a rat hole with Fran as coach. I'll probably donate after the B-ball coach is hired.

Iowa should be at $4 million NIL if you assume $1.5 million last year + $2.5 million this year. That $4 million will easily buy the Drake roster and maybe a couple extra pieces.

Devries would have been a possibility last year...that boat sailed away when Indiana came in with more money and Indiana newspaper is saying it was mostly a done deal mid season. McCollum was my top choice since I heard about him from this board. Even if no McCollum we will be better off with new coach vs sticking with Fran ball.

I agree Fran and the AD and administration are all to blame for low NIL at Iowa. The original mandate from the athletic department/administration that the Swarm would have to follow Title9 showed there was poor understanding of NIL dynamics. Other schools did NIL ticket surcharges, embraced NIL, went out and found big donors...Iowa flopped and Fran is big part of that. I wouldn't donate to Fran...nothing special as a coach and his boys tweeting and complaining all the time about perceived mistreatments turns me off.

"Beth doesn't have a plan" is the dumbest most dramatic narrative. No one ever said DeVries was the only candidate. In fact a lot of the reporting after the big donor call she had right after the Fran announcement indicated that she personally seemed to prefer McCollum from the start.

Everything she's done has indicated that she knows exactly what she's doing. She realized it wasn't going to get better with Fran, acted decisively to move on, and almost immediately was able to significantly improve the financial situation and get commitments for buyout money, facility improvements, and a healthy NIL bump. She didn't get Iowa up to Indiana level but no one would get Iowa up to Indiana level, unless there are some secret billionaire Hawkeye fans I'm not aware of. They're still very likely to hire one of the hottest coaching candidate and most respected basketball minds in the country.

DeVries got an offer from one of the richest programs in college basketball and took it. That doesn't say anything about Iowa that hasn't been true for more or less the entire history of those two programs. Indiana has always been a better job and probably always will be a better job. Iowa not being on their level doesn't mean things are hopeless or that they can't be competitive.

Name the program they kept their crappy coach from prior to NIL and all of a sudden they were good when NIL kicked in?

You get the right coach and the money will follow.

People are not going to go to games or give their money to a badly coached team long term.

Iowa’s mistake was extended Fran for accomplishing nothing.

Swarm financials were never released so only a select few actually know how much $ is actually being distributed. You saying 18th out 18 is a just a guess. Get the actual data, then come back and do your bitching
It was between 5-6 million in 2024, that’s for ALL sports.

I think McCollum is an outstanding coach, BUT I don't believe his current players could win consistently in the B1G. Any coach has to have some horses to work with. First, Iowa needs to get McCollum to agree to a contract. At least WV, which is HIGHLY motivated, is also trying to get him to be their coach. Second, if NIL is really going to go up significantly, to at least $4M, that should give McCollum or another coach a fighting chance to field a team that compete for the upper part of the B1G. I don't know numbers, but I would guess that $4M might still be in the bottom half of the league. Third, the portal makes it possible (not necessarily likely) to create a very good team quickly, but it would sure help if McCollum brought his best 3 or 4 players and a couple of Iowa's better players, especially Dix, and some recruits, were kept at Iowa. IMO, they would still need a few great portal additions. That might be a pretty big if, but the sooner Iowa gets a coach, the better the chances of that happening.

That is from the collective part that is required to release financials as a 501(c)(3). The bigger money is on the corporate side (SWARM Inc.) that keeps the numbers private.
