Bill Maher NAILS IT again

Agreed. I'm amazed by how much I agree with Maher.

Saw him a few weeks ago at the Hulu Theater in New York. I'd guess 80% of his set was political. You know those Trump rallies where the crowd gets vocal each time he mentions Hillary or Pelosi? Well, this was the opposite of those. The NYC crowd didn't hold back when he mentioned characters like Ted Cruz. Odd vibe in the room.

I agree with most of what Bill says. However, I think he is out of touch with the ultra cons in the midwest when he says that everyone agrees with gay marriage. I still hear homophobic statements all the time when I deal with rural Iowans.

I think he meant as States, not individuals. He's a smart guy, he knows not everyone backs gay marriage.

Now what did Bill just say about labeling things as _____phobia?!!

"It really means anything I don't agree with" ;). (Guess you did say you agree with most - not everything - Bill says).

Yeah, still a significant difference between the BMs and old-school conservatives. But these two camps can coexist, just like the way he's not down with "cancelling" Dave Chappelle.

Figuring out why there's hate isn't difficult, it's due to the fact right wingers ingest lies, conspiracy theories and fearmongering over facts.

Americans are voting on the same issues with two totally different perspectives and it's not going to end well.

You can't address the disconnect unless you address the first amendment and that's not going to happen.

Maher and republicans actually have a lot in common if you listen to more than the MSNBC talking points.

his Joe Rogan podcast was one of the best.

I agree, he nailed it on everything he said. I'm curious, do you think he nailed it on everything he said? If not, what parts do you think he nailed it on? Or better yet, which part did he not nail it on?
Yep. Dems’ messaging sucks, not that it would do them any good to have a Frank Luntz on their side anyway. Cons hate Dems so much they vote against their own best interests just to own the libs. It’s like all the Herman Cain Award winners. They post memes about the Dems being just like Hitler and vaccines being just like Auschwitz, then they end up in the hospital with Covid and have go fund me’s to pay for their stay because they voted against Obamacare, then they suffer and die a horrible death but damned if they didn’t show liberal old me.

And there it is. The hate in America is all the Right's fault. Good for you, Lemming.
You guys think CRT is a thing being taught in schools and that JFK is coming back to life in Dallas. Maybe your side doesn’t have a monopoly on irrational hate, but you’ve got more than a 99% share.

This line of thought was precisely the point he was arguing against.

I understand his definition of phobia, and I agree. Let me clarify my statement....I know plenty of rural Iowans, particularly in NW iowa that are genuinely scared of LGBTQ.

Just as the rich white suburbans in Johnston, Waukee, and Ankeny are scared of CRT. Johnston is down to banning books.

Jan is mostly independent...but sometimes needs to be reminded that only one side is trying to end democracy in the US. He would tell you the people you mention are batshit crazy, mostly.

And then do some whataboutism about how AOC wanting cheaper prescription drug prices is just as crazy as Qanon. Both sides and all.

I do agree the false equivalencies that get peddled are almost always coming from the right. As much as I dislike things happening on the far left, what is happening in MAGA land is far worse. And it is far more of an existential threat to our democracy and way of life than the “woke” mob.

Are you sure you agree with most of what Maher says? He pushed back on CRT in schools too. Maybe that makes him scared of it?

Anyway, I appreciate how Maher allows for some disagreement between sides without his head exploding. This was my main point. Just thought I'd point out the phobia thing at the same time.

He did just say the Dems messaging sucks. He questioned part of the Dems common sense, and not related to messaging.

Never said that. I think if someone disagrees with you on anything, you lump them all together with The Trumpers. I am far from being a Trumper. Never have and never will vote for him or anyone that echos his nonsense.

You need to stop seeing things as black and white, and realize not everyone that disagrees with you on something is the enemy.

@SoonerBeAHawk

Where I differ with Maher on talking about America's past is with teaching h.s. school kids. They need to be taught history accurately. Elementary kids need to learn to read and write before we get them into it. But the only people I see at school board meetings complaining about h.s. students learning that America is not perfect are white privileged parents. No point in sheltering privileged white kids from realizing that the world is not a perfect place for all.

I'll play Ken Burns' segment from Morning Joe this morning as soon as they get it up. He talks about the extraordinary accomplishments of America, but we can't ignore our downfalls.

How many of those nut jobs are in Dallas waiting for JFK Jr. 500 people? That defines the entire right leaning population in your world?

The media lives for people who lap that up and call it real news.

You must have missed the Bill Maher Nails it thread where he talks about the Slow Coup in America. I agreed he nailed it.

Where I get into the batshit crazy language is the Democrats using race as a weapon and labelling everyone, including black conservatives white supremacists. I already know where that batshit crazy is in the Republican realm.

Calling you out..... Give me one example where a Dem called a black conservative a white supremacist. You can't.

Your smug is exactly what Bill is taking about. Iowa City suspends black kids at a much higher rate that white kids. We had a whole thread on here recently where the resident left wingers defended that and blamed the black kids.

But hey you sure are superior to those rural Republicans and Ankeny racists.....

I call the media an extension of the Democratic party. And they are.

I'll reply with more here. Do you consider yourself a Democrat? Do you think those that call Black Conservatives white Supremacists on CNN & MSNBC consider themselves Democrats?

Where did I say Democratic politicians?

Cliff notes: everything said on this show about the Right and Republicans and how "they" are destroying this country, "why won't they just listen to us!", you could flip on FOX and there is a similar interview using the words Left and Democrats and how "they" are destroying this country.

At least Bill recognizes the two sides don't talk anymore and will not listen to each other and that they hate each other and that isn't a good thing. I do think he blames too much of that on the Right but I expect that because he acknowledges he is an old school Liberal. I agree with a lot of what he says, as an old school Conservative. At least the old school, common sense sides are willing to talk and listen, and that is what he is advocating for in this interview.

I wish the Far Right and Far Left would just go away. We'll trade that crazy Taylor or Hawley in if you get rid of AOC and the Squad. Deal?

I'm not smug. I've seen the data. Iowa is failing minorities in schools. Why is that? Why is there white flight? Why are white parents so scared to teach our students about Jim Crowe, Wounded Knee, Japanese internment?

I'm not smug; maybe you are obtuse.
