Black jerseys reveled

I kept thinking we were Minnesota when I'd glance at the TV.
I think the unis were pretty "meh", but if the players like them then I'm all for it. I actually like the idea of an alternate uni, just didn't love the execution. We could clean a few things up.

It was a good novelty, but not a uniform I would like to see as the normal. The current (traditional) uniform is the best looking in both college and pro (Pitt Stealers) football. Stick to what looks best.

Not a fan of design last night. Liked the black pants though. Thought the oversized numbers looked bad.

I thought the uniforms looked great. I believe "bad-ass" was the actual word I used.

In fact, I'll admit that like others have said, it crossed my mind that perhaps we could make these our permanent uniforms.

At the end of the day, however, we should probably stick to our regular uniforms, which are generally very good. The thing you have to remember about uniforms is that they are all about branding. (And uniforms are only one component of branding.) Unless we want to change the "brand" of our football program (and I don't think we do), we shouldn't make a permanent change to our uniforms.

That said, there are elements of the black-out uniform we could incorporate into our regular wardrobe without changing our overall brand.

First, would be the helmets. Moving the ANF logo to the back (and removing the yellow stripe and the giant white numbers) is a great adjustment. The Tiger Hawk is one of the greatest logos in college sports ... there's no reason to clutter it up with the ANF logo stuck right above it.

Second, I'd be in favor of keeping the black pants for use from time to time. They could be worn with either the black or the white jerseys, and would offer a bit of variety, while still preserving our traditional look.

Best alternates I've seen in a long long time, and the 2nd best iowa uni ever behind the Kent st throwbacks (yes, that included the "regular" unis). The details can change, but black on black needs to happen more often. It's nice seeing them in something non-gimicky yet specific to iowa (not an NFL copy).

I wasn't a fan of the idea of an alternate in the first place, but was excited to see what it looked like.

I thought they looked a little too DIY for my taste. I expected something a little more polished in the pattern/texture department, like what you see when Baylor or Misery do an all black look. Remember the kid, whose mom wouldn't spring for a real stormtrooper costume, and instead made her kid wear a long sleeve white tshirt and white pants with a helmet? Flipping over to the Baylor game, I felt a little bit like that.

I don't expect something like Oregon, but if we do something like this again, let's hope they pay more attention to the details and flash of the deal. It's an HD world these days, after all.

A couple questions.

1. Are those actually the same helmets as usual, just stripped of decals and different ones put on? Or is it a completely new helmet itself?

2. The tiger hawk is actually bigger than the normal one, right? It wasn't really that apparent but after looking closely it sure seems bigger than the normal tiger hawk.

What "details" are you referring to?

I think the uniforms were great. I love the black pants with tigerhawk and the oversized tigerhawk on the helmet with no stripe. I think we looked A LOT more athletic in them. The players liked them and recruits love them.

I think they should tweak the numbers a bit and maybe a black number outlined in gold. Either way, it was fresh and it was awesome in my opinon. I really hope we ditch the stale Steeler uniforms and move to the next era. These are a great start!
