Bo Bassett Announcement

It will take a lot to catch Carl and fOSU - but we’re in the game. And that matters. In the past the staff was loathe to actually “recruit” - but have since taken a more aggressive stance in SOME instances. (Knox, cough, cough)

So no need for negative nancy stuff just yet.

recruiting requires CONSTANT hard work and flexibility. we constantly get tied to our one style only and rightfully so.

Being a "fan" of a program is hardly a reason for him to go to Iowa or for Iowa fans to have expected it. Pretty sure he would claim he was and is a fan of OSU too.

To me its bigger than Bo. I'd just like to get to where losing out on a recruit like him is no big deal like it is for PSU. Years ago people were saying that recruits were onto Cael and he would no longer be bringing in so many top recruits. Then we were told Mr. Lee and his 2 inch binder gave Brands a wealth of knowledge when it comes to recruiting. Then we had rich guys for a couple of years telling us the playing field has been leveled financially. Now I guess its the new facility and the belief that Spencer is so beloved that we will be able to compete in the recruiting wars.

Outside of effort, this really is a huge part of it.

I've never understood Askren's beef with TNT, but they need to start doing whatever they can to get on his good side. AWA has already produced some studs who would have looked great in the Hawkeye lineup. With Mesenbrink at PSU, I'm afraid that will start another pipeline that we failed to establish close to home.

Yeah I don't understand Askren beef but cleaning it up imo should be 100% the top priority. I don't think you are going to ever consistently get guys to leave PA and surrounding states and come to Iowa to wrestle. A lot of 18 year old kids like to stay near home and I'm sure that kids whose parent put in the time and money to support an elite wrestler are closer families than most. Its just hard to get those families to separate such a distance.

I believe that Askren actually likes Terry Brands and I am not aware of any specific beef with Iowa. I think he just does not like the way that Iowa develops guys and prefers a new school approach of scrambling, slickness, etc.. as opposed to what he views as a hard work/grinder style at Iowa.

Agreed. At this point, he should be keeping his options open. Everyone his age should. Of course, the evil empire in State College seems like the obvious choice, but he also strikes me as the type of kid who dreams bigger - like putting Iowa back on top, for example. Time will tell, and best of luck to the young man.

still have to have head coaches do the work and be flexible enough to allow potential recruits the opportunity to use their athleticism. instead of having to fit Tom’s style.

If Tom continues to develop on the training hours/intensity side - you could see things like a cejudo. Iowa pace and toughness with high level athleticism.

People keep talking about this a lot, but I have never heard a recruit say, "I'm going to XYZ school because they have new wrestling mats and a dedicated room where I can watch film." It's a non-factor.

it sounds like there are changes being made to the recruiting and training.. Has this been brought on by Tom or is there outside influences??
