It's a matter of semantics. If "cheating" means you've gained an unfair advantage through manipulation of the rules, then you bet your ass PSU has been cheating for 15 years. And you bet your ass Okie State is doing the same. It's no coincidence that Okie State exploded the minute a Carl disciple showed up in Stillwater, and don't give me this "great technician" bullshit. Wake up, folks.
Cultists can deny, deflect, and project all they want, but the fact is that Iowa has been competing with one hand tied behind its back for 15 years while PSU has played by an entirely different set of rules, gaining a ridiculous recruiting advantage. Call it rich uncles, just dumb luck, some crazy fortunate ROTC affiliations, just good camp stipends, just a RTC paying its guys, or whatever, PSU has been "operating in the gray area" for 15 years while Iowa has been operating by the book. How in the hell is that fair? It's obviously not remotely close to fair.
I think there needs to be agreement among all D1 wrestling programs regarding acceptable practices in recruiting and compensation of wrestlers. Obviously, the new revenue sharing system needs to be incorporated. Perhaps the NWCA could oversee such a deliberation process. Whatever the case, it's beyond asinine for some programs to be allowed to operate with impunity while others are restricted to following the letter of the law by their compliance departments. If folks want to have college wrestling in any form that's worth watching, something like this will happen. Ground rules need to be agreed upon and followed by every program in exactly the same manner, and there should be stiff penalties for violations. Enforcement will always be a challenge, but anything would be better than the joke we have now.
If everyone is fine with one or maybe two programs ever having a realistic chance of winning team championships while they play by a completely different set of "rules", nothing will be done. In that case, I'm sure thousands upon thousands of former wrestling fans will be happy to find other sports that interest them, because what we have right now is complete bullshit that is bound to alienate fans who want to see a fair fight. It's a total farce of a "sport". This isn't fair competition -- it's all about which program can give the most stuff to entitled, pampered kids and their needy helicopter parents.
