Bo Bassett Decommits

Serious answer - figure out how okiest has their entire recruiting class at the RTC for extended periods to train.

And if this answer is, it’s illegal, turn them in.
Yea, I really don't understand how Jax has been training in Stillwater back since John was still the HC. Maybe in the past he would just stay with McCommas and train with Fix separately, but recently he has been openly training with CWC and getting coached by them. Have to assume there is a way around the 250 mile restriction

VHS.....

so the Bassets wilingly gave up "millions" ?
Vhs crossed my mind as well 😂

And with Bo’s social media following, his NIL valuation will be higher than most other wrestlers. Be surprised if they gave up anything as it’s become pretty apparent that the family is all about the incentives/perks at this point

Fair enough. I personally don't think that is throwing Iowa under the bus. Thats kinda weak to get butthurt over a generic statement. His actions showed he wanted to be there. Maybe asking for too much, but went there first to try and get it.
I dont think anyone is getting their feelings hurt over the comments, but you are lying to yourself if this wasn't the Bassets taking a shot at Iowa on the way out.

I also highly doubt it is Bo (or Keegan) (or Melvin) making the posts that we've seen

Same with their entire recruiting class.

Robideau spent the ENTIRETY of last summer in Stillwater.

Oh I don;t think they actually gave up any money. But what they legally can get for sure.

I can see it happening if he paid his own way down there and stayed with a buddy and was training with a "high school club" that just happened to have OSU wrestler drop ins to train with lol. BTW, Iowa sent Desanto out to PA to train with them which shows me that Iowa was trying to do work arounds to allay some fo the Bassett training concerns.

let me tell you a little secret…

The NCAA has zero interest in enforcing rules. They aren’t the FBI and they aren’t going to investigate. it’s up to the schools. If someone reports something to them, they shrug their shoulders and say too bad.

As long as you don’t embarrass them like Michigan football did, it’s no harm no foul.

Since the schools are in charge, some schools take it seriously and some don’t. That is a reality.

Wonder if that’s why he didn’t end up at Iowa… Maybe in fact Beth let him know that kind of stuff wouldn’t fly here. He takes the cowpoke job knowing his guys are going to be runner up at worst when aren’t winning it.

Nah...Beth didn't even know who he was until Kyven tagged her in a X post. It had to be explained. I think once ADs have made their decision in niche sports, that's when they start researching replacements. It's a process when that window opens up. TBH, I think it would make sense that DT or someone close to him leaked it to have bargaining power with OSU.

Nope. not what happened at all.

Don't know who paid for travel and lodging - but he was in okiest room with the regular RTC practices every single day last summer. I know he was staying in an apartment there. But even still, that's against the "rules" as has been posted.

And yeah. That was a great job by TNT to get Desanto out there. So Bo isn't incorrect that he needs higher level partners, but it needs to be consistently. Why do you think Robideau beat Miller at U20 WTTs?

This news really hurts. Got to hope Angelo is good being the only guy that can realistically win a national title in the next three years, after Drake and Mikey C are done next year. I guess heavyweight clears out for Ben K but this is not good.

"After a lot of prayer and talking with my family, I’ve decided to decommit from the University of Iowa. This wasn’t easy, but I believe it’s not the right fit for me as a wrestler, a person, or for my faith journey."

He (or his parents) could have stopped at "wrestler" but like Chael said, they can't help themselves trying to turn it into a "values" issue. One can see the wrestling part of it but don't insinuate that a program is lacking in moral fiber.

"I’m grateful for the opportunity, and I’ll never speak a bad word about their program."

Nah...but they have "Uncle" Pat do it for them and that started minutes after the announcement was made.

Yea...I was looking at work arounds...that's why I had the lol in there. You would know more than I do about it. If bringing Bo out to IC was against the rules, bringing Melvin out there before recruiting even opened would have been "double secret probation" wrong.

When I read his statement I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he meant he will never speak bad about the program from here on out. 😉

Not true . Jax is in the Oklahoma st room all the time. Does he go to the farm sure he does but that's not why he's in Stillwater. You don't have the facts on this one

Ask around DT & Coleman aren't exactly best friends 🤣

I think it's become pretty clear what went on here. In a vacuum, what TnT and the hawk program was willing to do for the bassets is more than reasonable (and unquestionably in compliance). But add in the fact a high school teammate and close friend of Bo is getting to do with okst what the bassets want for Bo, AND he's had more off season success, and it was a recipe for disaster. I get the bassets questioning Iowa if they were unable to do what okst is for Jax. And if what they're doing isn't in violation they have a right to be upset.
Whatever they're (okst) doing is the ultimate truth that needs to come out in all of this.
If it's tricky, creative, expensive but legal, then shame on Iowa for not figuring it out.
If it's not in compliance, Iowa needs to be screaming from the rooftops about it and laying out exactly what is going on.

USA Wrestling, not the NCAA, is in charge of USA Wrestling RTC rules.

The difference is these parents are expecting it and demanding it.

If you and your child really want to be at a specific program then you'll find a way to make it happen. Look at Lee. Look at Arnold.

I think there's layers to this and throwing all the blame at TNT is ignorant.

They definitely have problems, but them refusing to bend the knee to the Bassetts isn't one of them.
Bassett, even if he stayed his whole career with the hawks would never be "the guy" in the room I've said it all along out of the big three, Jax, Bo and melvin, Bo will have the least credentials after graduation. His fame and projection had alot to do with, 1st Pyles, 2nd SM, and 3rd i do think even Willie missed a bit with his BB ranking.

Sorry Willie not doubting you but I do think the hype around him had made him shine a little brighter than what he is capable of.

Umm, I don't disagree with anything you posted. In fact, you're probably right in the eval of those 3.

But did you mean to reply to my comment?

*nevermind! I get what you're saying*

Rulebook says to report RTC violations to USA wrestling

USA wrestling, the one organization in this that has less teeth than the NCAA… lol.

But to your point there are two angles, rtc issues report to USA wrestling and athlete participation is under the purview of the NCAA.

Both go in the same filing cabinet

I agree with you, but who says Iowa isn't yelling it from the rooftops. I think the problem is OSU's compliance department sticks their head in the sand and says no way are we self reporting anything and NCAA/USA wrestling doesn't have any interest in investigating anything. All institutions are to self report wrong doing, so if they don't report anything nothing sketchy is taking place right!?! The high school kids know which colleges will "bend" the rules and which ones won't and you are a fool if you can't see that this is putting Iowa at a huge disadvantage in recruiting. Lots of teams offer great coaching, but only a few offer lots of "off the books" incentives. Money is the root of all evil in society and that isn't getting better as time moves on. Keagan Bassett spelled it out. "We only want the little things that everyone else is getting".

It's a matter of semantics. If "cheating" means you've gained an unfair advantage through manipulation of the rules, then you bet your ass PSU has been cheating for 15 years. And you bet your ass Okie State is doing the same. It's no coincidence that Okie State exploded the minute a Carl disciple showed up in Stillwater, and don't give me this "great technician" bullshit. Wake up, folks.

Cultists can deny, deflect, and project all they want, but the fact is that Iowa has been competing with one hand tied behind its back for 15 years while PSU has played by an entirely different set of rules, gaining a ridiculous recruiting advantage. Call it rich uncles, just dumb luck, some crazy fortunate ROTC affiliations, just good camp stipends, just a RTC paying its guys, or whatever, PSU has been "operating in the gray area" for 15 years while Iowa has been operating by the book. How in the hell is that fair? It's obviously not remotely close to fair.

I think there needs to be agreement among all D1 wrestling programs regarding acceptable practices in recruiting and compensation of wrestlers. Obviously, the new revenue sharing system needs to be incorporated. Perhaps the NWCA could oversee such a deliberation process. Whatever the case, it's beyond asinine for some programs to be allowed to operate with impunity while others are restricted to following the letter of the law by their compliance departments. If folks want to have college wrestling in any form that's worth watching, something like this will happen. Ground rules need to be agreed upon and followed by every program in exactly the same manner, and there should be stiff penalties for violations. Enforcement will always be a challenge, but anything would be better than the joke we have now.

If everyone is fine with one or maybe two programs ever having a realistic chance of winning team championships while they play by a completely different set of "rules", nothing will be done. In that case, I'm sure thousands upon thousands of former wrestling fans will be happy to find other sports that interest them, because what we have right now is complete bullshit that is bound to alienate fans who want to see a fair fight. It's a total farce of a "sport". This isn't fair competition -- it's all about which program can give the most stuff to entitled, pampered kids and their needy helicopter parents.
WWDMHawkeye, your comments very thoughtful. A perspective; the NCAA was in place to manage, control, govern, regulate intercollegiate athletics. Rather than exectute their mandate, they were consumed by greed. Today the NCAA is broken. You cannot put humpty-dumpty back together.

Collective Bargaining is the path forward, conceding that Collective Bargaining has it's own set of problems/issues. Nonetheless Collective Bargaining performs relatively well for numerous athletic enterprises, i.e. NBA, MLB, NFL. Recognizing athletes as employees of their respective institutions, and their subsequent unionization will be a step forward. The current NCAA situation seems an (almost) impenetrable maze.

Marvin Miller are you out there, are you listening?

Have you heard anything from Iowa on it or any of the other rumored improper benefits? Have our resident wrestling journos? I sure haven't. A high school freshman tweet surely isn't going to affect change if schools are doing things illegally to gain an advantage. As a fan I need to see the same from our staff and admin in this area as we expect from the athletes... some fight. Sitting back and thinking it will eventually get dealt with isn't working.

Iowa - "The most ethical program in this sport's history." Wonder what he knows about the others?
Notice the two Penn Staters are the laughers? Deal with it. Your compliance department is more than likely well compensated (off the books of course) for its position on all things PSU wrestling. Gray area? Go for it because we would have to self report anyway. At some point just accept the fact that factors above and beyond the great Carl's wrestling prowess have helped the program get to this point. Be happy you're OK being a bit dirty. It's given you a chance to get on top and stay there. Now you just have to deal with another who coach, booster, and program who are willing to sell their souls to get back to relevance. John Wooden was dirty too, by the way. You're in good company.

Crazy work coming from a guy responsible for deleting fellow moderator's posts and literally anything disparaging himself.

Since I was the other guy, I will say that Turk and I disagreed but settled the issue and he's been doing a solid job as the mod in here since that happened a few months ago and he has quietly stayed above the fray. Being a mod sucks as you are never as tough on the opposing "fans" as you should be for some and never as "free speechy" for others.

no offense taken. i have it (currently) 1. Jax 2. Bo 3. Jayden James (melvin is different class)

and i said on a show that i seriously considered James above, well, everyone, including Bo.

Would be a kick in the nuts for Bassett to choose Nebraska AND Angelo transferring there to be with his brother.
