Bohannon having surgery, will miss rest of the season

I hope Joe T. is now in the gym putting up 1000 shots instead of 500. He's going to have to pull the trigger if he gets open looks.

I wonder if he is having hip replacement surgery? Bone on bone friction with the ball and socket? Does anyone know?

what if he delays and realizes 8 months from now that it needs to happen?
then he's really screwed.....

Even worse, he gets surgery and other issues arise in other areas of his body because his myopic hip issues stem from much large postural and kinetic chain issues. Kind of like what happened this year with his other hip....... And now he’s had two surgeries on his hips that perhaps never needed a scope in the first place!

It’s totally feasible that hip issues stem from shoulder issues, or lack of ankle mobility, or pure postural habits that create a kyphosis posture that results in poor body mechanics and ultimately wear and tear on the body.

Long story short, he’s going to need a ton of PT regardless, why go under a knife if you probably don’t have to.

And to the person asking if he needs a total hip...the chances of that are 0.000001% at age 21.

85% of people? So, wait. There are, say, 7-year-olds running around with hip labrum tears or impingements?

Yes. Very unlikely at age 7, but absolutely possible. The reality is that you can live without pain with some cartilage damage. The pain comes when you develop poor movement patterns, from poor posture (sitting hunched at a desk all day) that result in body mechanic problems and create hip impingement. Hip impingement (also known as FAI) is not a damning diagnosis that requires surgery. It simply is your body telling you that you move like an idiot and need to learn how to move again. Simple as that.

Tough to lose him, but this seemed essentially destined from before the start of the season.
Good luck to him in rehabbing. Hope he can come back for a memorable final year of eligibility.

Joe T is surely going to get more minutes and he looks like a guy who won't back down from the challenge.
Bakari E. needs to step up and give a solid 8-10 minutes a game.

Are you a chiropractor?

Even if he doesn't play another minute, he is one of my all time favorite Hawks. From the missed FT, to the game ending heroics, to backing up good natured trash talking with our rivals AND raising over 20k for the hospital, we have a lot to be proud of with Jordan Bohannon. Get well young man.

What was his diagnosis?

His hips could no longer support the weight of his massive testicles.

Sad news for JBo and the team. His floor moxie will be sorely missed. He has really become a good leader on the floor even when he is not lighting it up.

Hawks need to.be lucky the rest of the way with injuries.
This might be the straw that breaks our tourny hopes.
keep fighting, Hawks

The insinuation of your conjecture is his medical care has been faulty and fraught with misdiagnosed conditions or treatment. What is your actual awareness of JB's specific condition that you even have knowledge of at this point in time. Who is treating him? Why are they wrong in their treatment plan? You are creating straw man 'feasible' scenarios to indict his surgery with no context whatsoever except your pet generalizations. Irresponsible in my book.

Im happy for him. Dude deserves to have a healthy senior year.

But someone's gotta step up now. We only have like 6 guys who can contribute on both ends of the court.

Bakari's on ball D is pretty good but he throws up absolute bricks on the offensive side. Cordell, not sure what he can do anymore.

Also how the f*#k do we get 5 open scholarships now?

Pemsl is done after this year imo. He got his four years of scholarship but injuries have made it where he is not a consistent power 5 player. He may have a game or two where he shows flashes but it won't be consistent. This will be a difficult discussion for Fran...as it is with anyone who cares about their players.

I could also see one of the McCaffery's going off scholarship for a season. I know scholarship players used to receive added benefits but for some reason I thought that went away...can anyone confirm one way or another? Perhaps if that is the case, the McCaffery's do the ol' baseball scholarship trick and each get a 1/2 a scholarship for a year. That will get you to your five.

Oh...and Till's scholarship is only good for this year.

It would really help if Patrick could get back on the court, which could give them more line up options, especially with Joe W and Connor possibly playing multiple positions. Unless he suddenly finds something we haven't seen at all this year, Pemsl cannot contribute on either end. If Luka or Kriener get into quick foul trouble or worse, we are really thin at 4/5.

1) I assume he's reasonably happy with the results of 1st surgery.
2) I assume he's getting treated at University expense and with top notch doctors, so if he's going to get it done, time is now.

Everyone wants to see him healthy for long term.

Separate issue, but I don't believe players get treated at the school's expense. Each player (football and basketball) are on their parents' insurance and whatever costs are associated with that. He can of course use the Iowa training staff and facilities for rehab (huge cost savings) but the medical stuff is the responsibility of the players and their parents/guardians. That more than paying for likeness pisses me off about the current NCAA setup. These players and their families shouldn't be forking over a dime for injuries that occur as a result of their sport. But such is the facade of amateur sports.

Yeah one would think he's had the best of the best in terms of diagnosing what's going on with him. Obviously other basketball players have had this surgery and come back just fine. I'm sure they have looked at all the options available.

Well, assuming Garza comes back next year Iowa should be a top 10 team in 2020-2021.

Top ten, huh? Based on what, exactly?

Are we close to being a top ten team now? Are we adding one or more program changing freshman next year? Or are you just counting on Iowa players improving their games significantly more than most of the underclassmen on most other teams in the nation?

Just curious... what other nine teams “should be a top ten team” in ‘20-‘21?

Why not?,.. They chose to play, and in Bohannon's case this isn't even the result of an "injury"...

Based on they aren't that far off from a top 10 team right now and they have been playing with significant injuries and with players that have a lot of room to develop physically and skill wise. They still need to get better on defense, but there has already been significant improvement there and there is no reason to think that can't continue.

My question to you is, why do you think this is completely unrealistic and why are you taking the idea of an Iowa basketball team being a top 10 team so personally?

Okay we'll disagree. I highly doubt a 21-year old is having two hip surgeries without playing basketball.

I don't know that hip surgery is particularly common among basketball players in general,.. It's more likely that Jordan is genetically predisposed to experiencing hip problems and the issue is being exacerbated by the athletic activities he chooses to pursue..

ok, dude. Smh

Answer honestly: how much college basketball do you watch? Have you ever watched a game that Iowa wasn’t playing?

List the other nine teams that “should be top ten” next year. Go ahead. Hint: You can probably just look at kenpom and take the teams with the highest offensive efficiency (in mid December), right? Isn’t that pretty much how it works?

But seriously... right now (with bohannon) iowa is projected as about a eight or nine seed by most reputable services. That’s pretty far off from top ten.

Just because fans like you make me laugh, doesn’t mean I take this stuff personally.

Frankly, too many surgeons are too quick to operate and cut in. 85% of people have some sort of hip labrum tears or impingement, yet only a smaller % experience pain from them. It is most often created not from within the hip, but from other issues throughout the kinetic chain of the human body that results in poor mobility and ultimately pain.

Personally, I’m not supportive of hip/knee//shoulder surgery unless there is some very clear ligament, tendon, or (very) severe cartilage damage. Lots of good holistic physical therapists out there can fix hip impingement without surgery. And I am confident this is an impingement issue...not a total hip at 21 years old. It’s created from many other postural issue...not the joint itself.

Cutting into your body only creates more scare tissue and less mobility.

I wish JBo the best, but I would frankly shy away from more cutting if I were him, and would find the best holistic PT out there that actually understand the body, and doesn’t get paid based on how many operations he/she does.
Please quote the actual diagnosis of his hip problems, if it was ever given last spring, rather than speculation on what
they are,

Why do you even post here, all your comments are negative and just rag on peoples opinions. Idk if they will be a top10 team next year, nobody does. But you also have no clue that they wont be! Guaranteed before this season started you were saying this team would suck and wouldn’t win 10 games blah blah blah. Well we lost cook, baer and moss from last years team, and in my opinion we look like a better team this year, there’s no reason to think we wont be improve even more next year! Improve as far as a top10 team who knows, but for you to say there’s no chance with the pieces we’ll have back shows that you’re the idiot. And honestly, what does listing the other “top ten teams next year” have to do with anything? Especially since that list continuously changes throughout the year!

A dude with 4 whole posts trying to tell me that I’m a negative poster.....jhc.

You haven’t read my posts or you would know that they’re overwhelmingly not negative. You and the bio hawk have never watched a college basketball game that Iowa wasn’t playing in or you wouldn’t be saying things like Iowa should be a top ten team next year, or Iowa is not far off from being a top ten team. Etc. etc.

Asking biohawk to list the other nine teams is my way of showing that he has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. He can’t do it because he doesn’t know anything about any other team except Iowa (and not even much about Iowa).

but that doesn’t stop him from making idiotic declarations like “Iowa should be a top 10 team next year”. It’s based on NOTHING but the fact that he wishes it was so.

These same idiots will be ragging on Fran next year if iowa is not in the top ten. It’s the willfully blind leading the willfully stupid.

I call it out when I see it because it makes us look dumb.

If your fragile whittle ego can’t deal with that.... not my problem.

I never once said they will be a top ten team next year. I said they have the potential to be. The fact that you say they wont be, no way no how never gunna happen is based soley on YOUR feelings. Aint nothing to back it up. To your point of who will be ranked top 10 next yr, well the blue bloods will be bc...well they always are. And that’s typically based solely off the recruits they bring in. Sometimes that’s successful, a lot of times its not. Having an experienced team is worth A LOT! And next year Iowa will be experienced. I in no way am saying Iowa WILL be top 10. But im not going to say they dont even have a chance to be, like you.

Makes me wonder if he will be fully healthy next year as well.
I'm not a doctor, but it seems Jordan's situation is very similar to Naz Long's:

It would be a stunner if Bohannon isn’t granted a fifth year of eligibility. His case is almost identical to that of former Iowa State guard Naz Mitrou-Long, who received a medical-hardship waiver following the 2015-16 season.

Mitrou-Long also had similar surgeries on both hips. He played in eight games as a fourth-year senior but wasn’t himself. After a 38-minute outing and an 83-82 win against Iowa at Hilton Coliseum, Mitrou-Long shut it down. He received approval for the fifth year and returned to have his best collegiate season — 15.1 points per game and a Big 12 tournament championship at Iowa State.

The only difference is that Mitrou-Long’s surgeries occurred in the same offseason. But in both cases, playing through the pain became unsustainable.

Long's 5th year was his most productive, so we can hope that Bohannon will have a good year next year as well.

Bummer, but not unexpected.

He has to do what’s best for his own long term health, first and foremost.

Yep. I think he's making a prudent decision here.
It would've sucked to have him play and then exacerbate the issue, limiting his playing time during key games down the stretch.

Hey, genius.

My posts are right there for the world to see. Read them. Now...please quote anyplace that I said anything like Iowa won’t be in the top ten “no way no how never gunna happen.” Or that “they don’t even have a chance to be.”

Those ideas are not in any of my posts anywhere. I don’t make stupid declarations like that because I can’t predict the future. I don’t put a limit on what the team can accomplish, nor do I create unreasonable expectations for them based on fondest wishes. Nor do I exaggerate how good we are right now — e.g. “not that far from top ten.” What I did was provide evidence, according to people who make money following this stuff that Iowa is not close to being a top ten team right now.

You are always welcome to provide contrary evidence rather than whining about how negative I am.

I challenged biohawk to support his quite bold declaration that “Iowa should be a top ten team in ‘20-‘21.” That’s it. He couldn’t. You couldn’t either because you guys don’t watch anyone but Iowa. You haven’t a clue what any other team has right now or has coming in next year but neither of you has the slightest hesitation proclaiming in mid December that Iowa “should” be a top ten team next year.

You don’t even understand how stupid it sounds to make a statement like that in mid December. Have you watched Louisville play? Arizona? Duke? Auburn? Baylor? Kansas? Ohio State? Oregon? Memphis? Tennessee? Gonzaga? Do you even look at sites like bracket matrix or the NET rankings? The highest rated team Iowa has played thus far is Michigan and they put up 103 points on us and beat us by 12 points (and you and I both know that it wasn’t that close).

Stop putting words in people’s mouths and get a clue.

I am only speculating but I wonder if they will keep Patrick on the sideline unless they absolutely need him this year. With how quiet everything has been around his status, I feel like they hope they can keep him out the rest of the year and get a medical redshirt but maybe he can play if they lose anyone else to injury and need him to play?
I’d love to hear Blair or someone in the know chime in on this.

I’ll admit to be naive about the redshirt rules, but are the number of allowable games for redshirting restricted to certain time points of the season? In other words, (assuming his health allowed for it) would MacCaffery be able to play a few more games here and there (staying under the limit) and still obtain a redshirt? The number of games aren’t limited to the first half or something like that?

I think this is accurate for basketball:

NCAA Division I – An athlete must not have participated in more than three contests or 30 percent of their season schedule (whichever is greater) and not after the halfway point of the season (based on the number of contests rather than a particular date).

So if Patrick were to play in the 2nd half he wouldn't be able to get a medical hardship waiver regardless of the number of games.
