With the Wilson BeachBall (bright orange model), I’m guessing 2-20 is more likely.
Honestly I feel this may have been a factor in Iowa's loss too, i get it that everyone uses the same ball but if you had not used that ball all year it will feel weird in your hand.. Fran needs to find out what the ball is the NCAA plans to use and use it all year. Or the NCAA just needs to have a standard ball everyone uses.

Iowa is a Nike school, so I presume they would not be allowed to use a Wilson basketball. I agree it would be better if everyone used a standard ball.

Wisconsin is the only B1G team that plays with the Wilson ball all year.

If JBo hits his first couple of shots, he may win the whole thing. If not, he may have a dismal showing.

I am sure there will be stories written on the Wilson ball. 3 point shooting in a lot of these games was dismal.

Iowa, during their home games, uses the Nike ball as part of the contract with Nike. When they play at Maryland, for example, they have to play with Maryland's UnderArmor ball. I agree that the NCAA should be like the NBA where every team, all season long, uses one brand of basketball.

I am sure Iowa was practicing Sun night through Thursday with the Wilson ball but as Drmac mentioned, sometimes the feel of the ball can get into your head, especially if you are missing shots you always make.

That and the god awful bright orange color of the Wilson balls. It makes them look like the cheap $10 outdoor rubber basketballs.

Maybe I'm old school, but just go back to the classic Spalding TF-1000. (I know they have used those for a long time, if at all at the college level). Still think that's the best ball ever.

At that level I don't think it would be out of the question for them to pick and choose a ball. Nike wants the exposure from the team/shoes/clothes. I don't think they'd really care if a school said, the tournament uses wilson, so will we.

I remember when Maryland was pretty good, people blamed it on the ball. Now that they aren't they must have figured out to minimize the ball issue.

Do you know that Maryland has hired a new coach right? Kevin Willard is a proven coach that lead Seton Hall for a number of years.
If won't be long till Maryland is again challenging for the top of the Big Ten with the portal available to Kevin and it doesn't have a thing to do with the ball.

IMO based on what Fran said post game when he was asked about the Wilson ball, I did not get the impression that they had been practicing much at all with the new Wilson ball. We will probably never know because the team and coach are not using that as any excuse as to why we could not win.

This was from 2016 after Iowa lost to Maryland:
""It wasn’t the basketball, coach Fran McCaffery insisted on Friday. And to ask otherwise, the coach said, was “idiotic.” Iowa shot 42 percent from the field, but the Hawkeyes were 5-of-24 in 3-point shooting, their worst effort from behind the arc this season. Maryland uses a basketball from Under Armour, which is the equipment supplier for the Terrapins. Iowa uses a ball from Nike, but when playing in road games practices in advance with the ball the Hawkeyes would be using. After Thursday’s game, guards Peter Jok and Mike Gesell said the basketball used in the game felt like a “street ball,” but said that it wasn’t an excuse for the Hawkeyes’ poor shooting.""

I like this idea. The B1G used Spalding for the B1G Tournament. That turned out fine.

I'm all in on the NCAA standardizing the ball. Of course, it's the NCAA so it will never happen...just because

Nope. Because we’re Iowa fans he’ll make everything for this thing and have to endure announcers saying shit like, “coulda used a few of those a few weeks ago” and then the other guy will respond something like, “yeah Iowa sure busted my bracket earlier than normal this year”, then maybe a, “has Fran McAffery ever made it past Thursday afternoon?” And then we’ll stare at the tv wondering how far we can throw it.

You don’t say.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing the quality of the players on the team might have made a difference as well.

Or programs started stocking the various basketballs they would encounter over the schedule. Also, the UnderArmour ball has evolved to be not so drastically different than the Nike ball used by most (since most schools are Nike schools).

I realize a lot of you will never want to move an inch on this, but the basketball can make a difference. I will never forget a game I had a bunch of years ago at Middle Tennessee State. I was top 10 in 3pt shooting nationally at the time. We’re warming up and I’m loving the feel of this different ball, partly because it felt light and just seemed to fly off my release, like effortlessly.

Then the game starts and my first 3 from outside the top of key banks in. And that was the only shot I made. 1 for 14. Solid looks all game, had nothing to do with the competition or pace or legs or open windows in the gym lol. The ball was so light-feeling, and we all had a rough night with it.

That was 25 or so years ago, before programs made sure they had a quantity of each major brand of ball to practice with in advance of a matchup. Nowadays Iowa will use an underarmour ball during the days/week leading up to Maryland or Northwestern. But even so, especially if it is a really different-feeling ball, it can have an effect.

I like the subtle brag. The ball can make a difference. It happens in multiple sports. The boy$ in Boone do it for high school football, take the check and break out the brand new football$ for the dome.

spalding basketball is great, football is an abomination though.

My son absolutely loves the TF-1000, which he got used to because that's what his school used. He tried shooting the Nike ball one night (a friend had one)...he liked the feel in his hand, but man, even with his normal warm up, I think he made something like 10 of 100 from 3, and half of those were lucky bounces.

The ball can make as big, or bigger, difference than the shooting background.
