Boone Myers surgery/done for year?

Damn it. I don't think people realize just how big of an impact losing him and Ike has had on this team.
Last I knew it was a high ankle sprain from August camp, not sure if related to that or if new injury. Most teams sans 'Bama can't lose both Tackles and continue to perform at a high level, and especially not Iowa.

Why does it feel like Iowa’s oline is gutted every year at some point. Even in 2015 it was patchwork

Surgery guys. Had it Tuesday. Was more than high ankle sprain but as usual tight lips at Fort Kinnick and I understand why. 4 week recovery and may be back for Nebraska or bowl game. Love to see home one more game in black and gold.

As mentioned above, injuries are just a killer for almost all CF teams, with the possible exception of OSU and Bama. Depth is usually a pretty big step down, at least in experience.

I am never very surprised at guys that get injured - I am always surprised when players don't get injured. The pounding they take is incredible, and they never have time to fully recover from "less severe" injuries.

Two freshman tackles, instead of two experienced tackles - and fans blame play calling on the offensive woes?

Then don't continue to try to run the ball with said tackles. Throw it a little bit more and then that might open the pass game up a little because only 6-7 will be in the box, not 9-10

Neither Ike or Boone will be mistaken for Jim Parker. They're ok, nothing more. Jackson's performance v NW, seven games into the season, is either poor player development or a recruiting misfire. There should be someone on the roster who can do better.

Good to see some smart posters on this thread. Boone was not healthy all year and it showed. Hope he gets back fast and sees field for another game or two.

Of course there were all the posters earlier saying let Jackson and Wirfs get the snaps and experience. A lot of good that's doing us now. Not to mention an OL coach that has never coached that position. Out of his league completely.

At this point doesn't matter. We are wjobwe are. Hope to win a couple we are not suppose to and see wherever land for bowl game. Nashville seems likely

A lot of them are wondering why we don't have serviceable Junior or Sophomore tackles.

Serviceable? I think the guys Iowa has in there are quite serviceable. The opponents that Iowa has lost to recently (NW and Mich St), have guys that are more than serviceable across the line.

Throw a little bit more, and complete them - right?

Iowa's opponents aren't stupid. They know if they don't stop, or slow down, the run game they won't beat Iowa. They do not respect Iowa's passing game as much as they do the run game. So, IMO, Stanley is going to have to put up 300+ a few times before the linebackers stop cheating on the run. I just don't see that happening this season.

I guess we have different definitions of serviceable. Please re-watch A. Jackson in the NW game. It was.... less than serviceable in my opinion. I would call serviceable tackles a couple guys you could plug in and do better than 102nd in total offense, 81st in scoring offense, or 101st in rushing offense.

Everyone knows there will be a drop off, but "serviceable" shouldn't mean they play poorly enough that you blame them for the offensive woes like you did above.

Didn't mean to suggest that it was all on the tackles. Inexperience at receiver and QB is big too.

I didn't know Jackson was doing that poorly I guess.

By some of the "thinking" on here, then, it would seem Iowa should have just forfeited the rest of the season once its starting tackles went down. If you can't pass or run then there's no point in playing. It's football suicide.

Of course, another thought process says you adjust the offense to account for the inexperience at tackle. Impossible? Apparently it is in Iowa City.

And yet ND State, UNI, Arkansas State, Miami of Ohio, Western Michigan, et al., come into Kinnick and compete effectively...if not win...against healthy Iowa teams. How is that possible? They're best offensive tackles can't be better than Iowa's backups, can they?

Absolutely. Adversity is to be avoided at all times. Time to give up.

I and some others have tried and tried to explain to some of you that how many are in the 'box' is almost totally determined by formation. One TE+ one back= 7 in the box. 2 TE's + 1 back= 8 in the box. 2 TE's + 2 Backs (FB) = 9 in the box. No TE's + 1 back = 6 in the box....etc. Want less in the box? It has to be done by formation or by being able to beat man coverage vertically so that the D is 'forced' to play someone over the top. Not counting the QB, the defense always tries to have one more in the 'box' than the offense does. 5 lineman+ 1TE + 1RB = 7, thus the D will bring 8 in the box. Pretty simple stuff. It wasn't always this way as defenses were afraid to play that much man, but this is commonly how they defend Iowa now. There are some pretty experienced and 'sharp' guys figuring out how to beat this, but the players still have to execute.

of course you can block better or coach better a RSFR so that he can play better than a 5th year SR.

Can confirm that he had surgery. Can't confirm how long he will be out but it wouldn't surprise me if he missed the rest of the season.

No, I can't. Merely an informed observation, which is the point of this forum. Btw, your sarcasm is elementary-school level. Go sit in a corner for 30 minutes.

Hmm. 4 weeks sounded optimistic so I looked it up and found this:

"After surgery, you will be immobilized in a splint for the first 10 to14 days. You will typically be kept non-weightbearing on the side of your surgery for six to eight weeks. You will then be allowed to advance your weightbearing in a cast or boot. Swelling persists for many months after this surgery. Stiffness can be problem and physical therapy is often necessary."

May be different for athletes.
