Bowen

Bowen is as good as gone I would bet. His body language isn't good. Only way he sticks around is if he's mature enough to understand his play dictates his minutes and it's totally in his control.

Bowen hasn't played well in recent games---no disputing that. Whether he agrees he deserves to be passed by Dix or instead he feels he hasn't been given a long enough leash is anyone's guess....but given the ease of switching to new school---I wouldn't be surprised if he is gone come spring. The one good thing about the instate Iowa kids---we rarely see one transfer out.

If you remember the first game against Rutgers, Bowen played like 4 minutes and had 2 live-ball turnovers. Even though they didn't look like it today, Rutgers is the #2 defensive team in the country and they're top 10 in steal %. I just think the pressure that Rutgers places on guards is something Fran knew Dasonte wouldn't handle well at the moment. He'll be fine as long as he stays patient and keeps progressing. I still see him working every morning with Spurlock (they post about it on social media), and seems to have developed a good working relationship with him.

Honestly, around the country a lot of highly ranked freshmen have just not had good starts to their careers and have been disappointing. It's looking like the '22 class is weak as a whole and it's largely assumed that the pandemic really stunted the development of a lot of these. If Bowen wants immediate playing time, he's going to likely need to transfer down to the mid-major level. That's fine if he wants to do it, but I think he's just going to need more time and eventually he'll be excellent here at Iowa. The flashes of potential are there. And let's be honest here, we as fans were really excited by him, but at the end of the day Bowen is a 3-star that was unranked on Rivals and barely cracked the top-150 on 247--that's the profile of someone who's a developmental recruit and it's likely that fans put too lofty of expectations on him this off-season.

I hope not but I expect hes probably gone.

Frans playing a shooting guard over him at the 1 now.
It’s a crazy era of college basketball we live in. Now, true freshmen expect to play big minutes or they bolt. Yes, I know Josh Dix is also a true freshman, but Bowen is just not ready for B1G Ten basketball.

I think Bowen is going to be a terrific player. Hopefully, he’s patient and works hard.

Hes not ready to play the way Fran wants at least.

I could certainly see him leaving. The whipping boy Ulis seems to be hitting his stride. Im shocked to see Dix playing some backup point. He doesn’t seem very quick, but he’s heady and also has the advantage of being pretty tall. He’s certainly not a true pt guard but I’m not sure what Fran is looking for. Bowen certainly needs to get stronger. But I also understand kids want to play. He’s got potential. Who knows.

I’m a fan a Bowen but I had no problem at all with him not playing today. I hope he stays and continues to work on his game as I believe he can bring some things to this team that no one else can.
I think he needs to try and put on a little muscle and continue to work on shooting.

I truly hope that Bowen sticks around, and that he gets good advice from some of the veterans ahead of him who bided their time, kept working, and are experiencing success for the Hawks this year. I still think he has a chance to be the best PG of the Fran McCaffery era.

But there are two other factors that Bowen could be considering:
  1. He’s still young, and has obvious potential. That means there could be some big NIL bucks waiting for him from a program that desires a guard with his skill set.
  2. Brock Harding, another PG will be joining the team next year. Will that make minutes even harder to come by?

LOL we haven't even reached February yet and multiple posters are predicting that Bowen probabably leaves because he didn't play against one of the better defensive teams in the country. Settle down, lads.

Well also based on his body language this season. Total speculation, obviously.

Fair point, and I was hesitant to start the thread.

But the way players are jumping in and out of the portal these days (especially with the NIL role), portal discussion probably needs to be a year-round topic.

If he cant handle being a 1st year role player then good riddance . You didn't see Kris Murray moping around and he sat out his entire first year. I certainly hope he stays but IMO Bowen hasn't yet displayed much, nothing to warrant extended minutes in this conference.

The way it is now. If an out of state player doesn't get playing time its safer to assume they will transfer if they haven't used their freebie.

Almost 1800 players were in the portal last year.

Which program is going to give "big NIL bucks" to an unproven pg who was a low 3-star prospect coming out of high school? He's averaging 1 TO for every 8.5 minutes he plays against Power 6 competition and his assist to TO ratio in those same games is 0.0. If that's worth it to other teams to throw money at, be my guest.
At least at Iowa he has the same NIL opportunities that everyone else on the team has.

I think there will be big improvement from Bowen by next season. A full off-season and the learning curve of watching

My untrained eye - he has the dribble to succeed and aggressiveness

There's a reason it's called a sophomore slump. He's small for his position and not that strong. It may take a couple of years to develop if at all.

If he’s mature he’ll talk to Perkins and Ulis and realize that if he sticks around his time will come. If not, I’m not going to lose sleep thinking about it. Dix looks great And Ulis is playing the best ball of his life.

Yes. Hes already played more than either of those guys as freshman.

Yes, and I'd guess 99% of kids, unlike Kris, don't have a father who played at that level to explain this world to him.
Bowen certainly has potential but also has a ways to go....

Bowen might end up being a very good player, but he hasn't been so far. His defense isn't good, he's not shooting well, and he has as many turnovers as assists. Out of the 4 guards, he's the 4th guy you'd want playing today. If the objective is to win games, Dix needs to be the first guard off the bench getting the vast majority of available minutes. He's probably playing better in conference play than any other guard on the team. The eyes and the metrics all support that.

No father needed to play at any level of anything to explain to an 18/19 year old you don't look for a new opportunity when you don't get your way, or what you're immediately seeking.

It's life and his PT should be the least of his worries right now
