I was distinguishing between pedophiles gay and straight, and who they would be more attracted to. Also, I don’t think a pedophile is more or less likely to take pedophile actions if they are gay or straight. Then again, it’s not like I study this so maybe pedophiles are into abusing kids regardless of gender and orientation. I was just speculating on his logic which you inquired into.

Of all of the people with strong opinions in here, how many have been or are currently involved with scouting?

I’m an Eagle Scout. My son has been involved in scouting back to 1st grade and is in the group formerly known as Boy Scouts for a few years now.

I’ve been a big proponent of them going co-ed. Pretty much every other scouting org in the world was co-ed except for the BSA. So we’re now more in line with the rest of the world scouting movement. Technically no troop is co-ed because of the way they have to be chartered as separate troops. But some, like the one my son is in, operate as co-ed where the scouts meet and camp together in separate patrols and separate tents. There are still boy-only troops and some girl-only troops too. So families can choose what type of org they want to participate in.

People complain about losing a “masculine” org for boys. In actuality little has changed for them other than having girls around. The requirements are all the same still. They aren’t doing “girlie” things and instead the girls are having to learn fire building, knot tying, camp cooking, hiking, etc. And I’ll say our girls, in general, are kicking the butts of many of our boys when it comes to skill development at the younger ages. I’m guessing it has to do with the girls mentally maturing earlier than the boys from puberty hitting slightly earlier. Once that hits for the boys they catch up quickly.

There’s only a few problems that we have. The biggest of which is we don’t get enough moms helping out. For national youth protection requirements we are required to have at least one female leader on any event where we have a girl attending. Our troop has a rule that almost always requires two to cover our butts in case there’s an emergency with the first one. There’s a few female leaders that are doing the heavy lifting on attendance at campouts and I’m waiting for burnout to set in for them.

We have only had one case of scouts dating, and these were classmates at school. Them dating didn’t create a problem at the scout events. But it was awkward for a couple months after they broke up.

I’ve met a lot of women that were in Girl Scouts and many hated it because they didn’t do fun stuff and instead sold cookies, did sewing, and other boring girl activities. Many said they would have loved to do the stuff their brothers were doing in BSA. Now girls will have that opportunity.

Idea is that you're more likely to molest the sex you're attracted to. Not that complicated.

More female teachers screw around with male students than female students. The reason is obvious.

And I suppose if we're getting into the topic of pedos... there are those who do it indiscriminately where it's not totally a sex-driven thing. And then there's the opposite. And then there's who cross-over from pedo to those that target teens where abuse is concerned. (which is where I'd assume we see more action)

Toss in the fact that the male sex drive apparently results in more of this behavior period and it's not hard to argue that you'd view a gay leader as more likely to pull something.

Now I suppose there could be this effect where society is aware of everything I just said and the demographics more likely to offend are aware of this and thus mind their manners better than might be expected otherwise.

(I've wondered if this is true of male school teachers vs female school teachers where we see that seemingly so many more female teachers pull crap with students -- but maybe that's just because there is like 10x female teachers)

There isn't anything wrong with co-ed scouts. But there also isn't anything wrong with having scouts divided by sex. Kids naturally divided themselves up by sex because the sexes tick a bit different psychologically, on average. And we have plenty of female only orgs.
