U of IA has granted him his release. Just got a notification from Hawk Central and TOS's mod is also confirming. Also being reported in The Lounge.

Sorry, no other info.

I was excited about him but thank goodness it's not Moss! Lets hope Ellingson sees the writing on the wall that he won't get much playing time either and makes the same decision. We really need to bring in an elite or experienced scoring guard/point guard!

It says he was looking for an expanded role.. I know no one wants to hear this but he might have STILL been behind Ellingson if that's the case!

I didn't mean it to be a big deal.. But scroll back through the next years starter threads I'm seeing 7-8 posts with him listed as starting SF.. Storm even called a few of those people out it looks like

Good news is Baer likely gets a scholarship. Bad news is there goes one of the guys I was hoping could move the needle for us athletically. If the spot does not go to Baer, I shudder to think who Fran and staff may target. We can talk about all the transfers and graduate transfers, but rest assured, Fran will double down on a marginally athletic kid with offers from IUPUI and Albany who needs to gain 25 pounds and can't create his own shot.

Wow.

Wonder if Hutton was struggling in school because he could have transferred at semester. Would have made more sense.
He expressed wanting an "expanded role" aka playing time which is understandable. He was the first of the Illinois kids to commit, correct?

So Fran banks a year on a kid who after red shirting (apparently) was told or deduced he was not going to start because (apparently) a walk on (Baer) beat him out. Lots of PT available in the Fran system, so either Hutton was a knuckle head or Fran had his Trey Dickerson goggles on.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to blow a red shirt season and then leave unless he plans to transfer to a lower level.

He could go JUCO, and be immediately eligible couldn't he (assuming he's not an academic casualty)?

Huttons transferring? And Ott's appeal was denied??

I really liked Brandon's athleticism but his offense was a liability. You have to have a balanced attack to be successful in this league. A good defensive stopper who can't score doesn't help.

I want to with the yound man all the best.

Confirmed on Bleacher Report.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me,
But I guess he foreshadowed it earlier last week on Twitter.

It makes sense when he says that he wanted an expanded role. With the freshman (Cook, Pemsl, Kreiner) that are coming in and with Baer, Jok, Uhl, Wagner, and hopefully Dale Jones competing for the forward positions it would be difficult to have an expanded role next year at 6'5, 6'6 with a limited offensive game. Hutton knows the competition he was up against and probably made the right decision for himself.

I hope that his decision signals that Dale Jones is healthy again and I hope that he lands at a school that will provide him with the expanded role that he is looking for.

Why do people get so wrapped up with saying he wasted a red shirt year. He could have not redshirted and played 2 minutes a game and then used a red shirt next year and be in the same position. At least now he can go the JUCO route and he didn't waste a year but either way he wasn't getting any playing time this year so it wouldn't have been much different from redshirting.

I agree with this. Think how May affected our offensive flow his first 2 season under Fran. If Fran coached a slow tempo he might be able to hide offensive deficiencies, and ride the defense. IMO a player that's no threat on offense makes us a much more beatable team.

So, burn a redshirt then transfer?
I know 18 year old kids are often not the clearest of thinkers, but this doesn't make sense.

It makes complete sense. He didn't decide on the two simultaneously. In the fall, after discussions with the coaches, he decided to redshirt.

After the season, he saw the writing on the wall and decided to transfer. The redshirt was a sunk cost.

Wrong this kid is prob the most athletic kid on the team by far...and by FAR the best defender, that is what Iowa needs right now, they have NO clue how to play D and that problem starts with the coach who has ZERO idea how to coach, why to go Fran...keep messing up

Good luck to Brandon, just doing what he thinks is best for Brandon . I wish it had worked out like he first thought it would. I felt he could'be been a good player for the Hawks, but it seemed that something between He and the staff got off track at some point and couldn't be resolved. It may turn out to be the best thing for all concerned but I was looking forward to a really strong press next year and felt he would have been a big part of it. Again best of luck Brandon I'm glad you chose to sign with the Hawks to begin with.

Yeah I wonder what is going on? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Not really a whole lot to figure out. Kid got feedback he likely wouldn't play a lot next year, decided he wanted to go somewhere where he could get more time. The kid is doing what is right for him. Fran is doing what is right for the program by being honest with the player as to where he stands. This is not a bad thing.
