Brands would like to have the lineup spot settled before Iowa’s Nov. 14 season-opening dual against Oklahoma State at Kinnick Stadium. About 27,300 seats tickets already have been sold.

“We’re going to let those three guys sort it all out in the wrestling room over the next few weeks,’’ Brands said. “They’re doing a good job. We’re looking for the guy who isn’t going to be satisfied scoring one-and-half, two points at nationals. We expect more and we want the guy who competes that way.’’​

Not sure how Brody is going to sort it out when he is unable to wrestle due to his shoulder injury. No mention of Turk so he must be taking a RS for sure. Look like Ryan and Carton will have a wrestle of sometime this month. Figure it would be a best of three matches. Winner has the spot and will best of three Brody in Dec.

sorry may not be the shoulder. he was in a sling and is on the mend. hopefully good togo second half of season or sooner.

I really wouldn't take what CP says much more seriously than any other random forum poster. He does a good job on his podcast of being entertaining, but I don't really get that he is some kind of genius wrestling mind.

Bottom line is there is no starter at this weight, or 157. So someone has to win it at some point, and that point right now is prior to Nov. 14th. In other words you're spot-on.

Brody has had some injuries in the past, but who hasn't. It can be a bit worry that guys who cut the hardest to get to weight do get injured more easily because their bodies aren't able to recover as easily due to the amount of work being put in to hold the weight and the body not being at full feed intake to help heal. Hopefully Brody doesn't have any issues once he gets down to weight only time will tell what will happen. As it's been said numerous times as of right now it doesn't matter as it doesn't sound like he is cleared for action yet and isn't down to weight yet anyway.

We will see. Seems like he wants it over soon. Look, I get it...been around a while too. Having a weight up in the air most of the season is disruptive to the team. Even in an individual sport like wrestling. Pick the guy and go. If someone wants to step up an challenge...bring it on. This we will see in February stuff just seems wishy washy. Wrestle them off and move forward. Hell, wrestle them off every week. At least the weekly change would be because the better man won that week.

Smart by Brands. That 149 drama last year had to be a distraction. Better to get it over and settled as soon as possible. Good for the mind set of the wrestler who gets the start. He knows its his and can focus on other opponents.

I don't disagree, but in this case, its not like the loser is going anywhere, so if some guy takes the 141 reigns halfway through the season I don't think it matters that much. I think that mantra needs to be applied situationally, and in this case, its not that big of deal. But I think it would have helped us in some situations in the past.

Unless they're contemplating pulling a redshirt, I'm not convinced it's a big distraction. I'm sure the staff would like the starter to identify themselves but let's face it, when guys are that close, the loser of a wrestle off is, by nature, hungrier than they guy in the spot. This has been the case at several weights over the last several seasons. Brands and Co have a history of dangling the carrot.

I don't mind having the wrestle offs throughout the beginning of the season like the opens etc. I know for us fans it's nice to know earlier. I think it's more of a distraction to a team to have wrestle offs early and the starter gets beat at an open tournament finals against the backup or gets beat in semis and the backup wins it...I guess pick your drama option but I don't mind having the midlands as the final say. That okie state dual will be a big dual so of course you need to have a wrestle off for it but I think midlands will be the final wrestle off in the long run.

That's really only true if Grothus is in the mix by then. Which at this point who knows. I have little doubt that Brody takes out anyone currently there. There's just nothing that's happened with the other candidates to date to suggest otherwise. Brody is a proven commodity, no one else comes close to fitting that description.

That said, people can, do, and are expected to improve. So Carton and Ryan will have their shot, we'll see if they're up to it or not.
