The moral of theIowaHawks statement is that if your are talented you can rape little girls, leave the country to avoid prosecution and if you wait long enough then you can return home and be revered and lauded as a master of your craft even if you are a dirty pedo who deserves to be in jail.
Wait, what? Who said ANY of this?
Is the "punishment" for drugging and raping a young girl that the public pretends your movies aren't brilliant?
Even if he was in prison I would revere and laud his filmmaking - because it is deserving of that status.
The fact that you can't understand the difference just further demonstrates your, and so many peoples, utter lack of critical thinking.
Next thing you will be telling me that JFK was a serial philanderer! Or that Steve Jobs was an egotistical asshole who ripped off his friends, pretended his daughter wasn't his and refused to support her! Or that Charlie Chaplin knocked up a 15 year old when he was 40! Or that Nelson Mandela organized the killing of people and was, by definition, a terrorist! Or that Elvis was banging as young of virgins he could get his hands on! Or that many Presidents and famous Americans owned SLAVES! Or Sean Penn/Billy Bob Thorton/John Lennon (and so many others) beating their wives!
People do bad shit, people do good shit, some people do really bad shit and really amazing shit. Polanski fits the latter. The world would not be better off without, say, The Pianist, just because you feel he needed further punishment.
Also, depending on whom you believe, it appears to be entirely possible that Polanski signed and agreed to a plea deal that was being reneged on, and that he would have served that time by now. Whether you believe that was sufficient penalty or not is a different matter.
