Brian punched a wall?

I like the passion! There's this idea that you have to be effective in the run game before play action works. Not True! With 9 guys in the box the D has committed regardless if you can gain 1 yard. Use play action and attack! Take what they gave us! We respond with shotgun too much. Shotgun shows we're passing and they drop back into coverage.

I agree. Passing with the QB under center is much more effective. It doesn't necessarily need to be play action every time either. Defenses key on the formation so why give them that advantage. I think it would help our run game to.

And run more from shotgun.

Jewell also redshirted, as did these as 4* recruits, OL Blythe, OL Walsh, DT Johnson, DT Ekakitie, 4* US Army AA Ward never started who just graduated in 2016, 5* OL Larson never played a down, 5* Doering career was riddled with injuries. so just because Wirff was a US Army AA does not = instant starter.
True, but it depends on the player. Some of those lineman were big in high school, but a lot of it was baby fat. It took awhile for Doyle to turn them into men. Wirfs is more like AJ. Already very powerful, and athletic. Nationally ranked shot and discus thrower, and state champ wrestler. He's an outlier like Bulaga, or currently Epenesa.

of course you went and used your baby fat meter on those other players.

Cute. I've never met any of these players personally. I make that determination based on how Doyle prepares an individual training plan for each incoming athlete. Doyle comments about this and some players openly admit that their first task was to change their body structure. Guys like Carl Davis, and Jaleel Johnson had to shed weight and work on lean muscle mass. Both came to Iowa closer to 340 lbs and had to get down to a leaner more conditioned weight. You see a lot of these kids who are over 300 lbs in high school and their not toned and well conditioned. Aleric Jackson had some of these issues as well. Now look at Wirfs and AJ Epenesa. Totally different animal.

Jackson came in at 285 lbs , how do you know that Wirff didn't come in over weight?

Brian Ferentz could be making a lot of money anywhere. He was wanted by many NFL coaches and could be at many other colleges. He didn't use nepotism to make millions.

We had another hot head coach that used to punch walls. His name was Rich Kazcynski. He couldn't control his temper, ran off a bunch of his players, and was ultimately run out of Iowa City. Those who think it's "cool" that a state employee who used nepotism to make millions of dollars by the age of 30 is punching walls make me scratch my head. That's a great example to set for the players. Maybe we should applaud if our coaches get arrested too?

I actually agree with the premise of what you're saying in terms of acting like an adult. There's a difference between showing passion and losing control.

We ran from 3 WR much more often in the first three games, but have gone back to tendencies in the last two games. We need to run from 3 WR and pass from 22.

There is no quick fix with the Iowa offense but I agree with those who are essentially saying our play calling is too predictable based upon the formations we are in. I also think it would make sense to pass more on 1st Down and to use the pass to establish the run.

From my vantage point (so obviously take it with a grain of salt), it seems the coaches might be a little too stubborn and arrogant with trying to establish the run at all costs. Again, the Hayden Fry mantra: "Scratch where it itches."

So back to BF punching the wall. Right after the game? What do you think set him off? Rushing yards, O line, turnovers, the loss...everything. Can coaches be fined?

Because the coaches have said that he's right where they want him at about 315lbs. I trust that they know when these big guys come in if their ready or not. Thats why he's been fast tracked since he got to Iowa City.

and that is why he is still the backup and not a starter. again poster trying to know more than the coaches in how to run their team

there is a difference between a coach not accepting moral victory and a bunch of nobodies on a msg boards, that whine like 5 year olds that just had their sucker taken from them

Yeah ok blah blah blah, whatever..............at some point we are getting the suckers back though, right

Here is an article from hawkeye sports where they talk about Tristan's weight. He cut weight to get to 285 and he doesn't look very flabby here.

So can probably try to keep up on current events and not stay on history with stars.

You need an attitude,a nasty disposition when playing oline. Size and strength are one thing, but if you lack the eff u mentality your going to be mediocre at best.

Scherff,Gallery,Yanda,Reif had it all

Devlin,Bruggeman lacked a bit in size but made up for it by being mean sob's

this was why I liked the move of Kirkpatrick from the DL to the OL, Reiff was a DL, Boettger was defensive POY as a SR in HS, also getting wrestlers for both the OL and DL as wrestlers have a built in nastiness. Wirff will be a starter for 3 years. it would not surprise me if its at Guard, as I could see Kallenberger at RT to have the OL look like this

LT 6'7 320 lb Jackson
LG 6'5 315 lb Wirff
C 6'4 295 lb Daniels
RG 6'5 305 lb Levi Paulsen
RT 6'6 285 lb Kallenberger he is RS'ing so I am guessing he will be over 300 lbs as a RSFR.

then you add players like Kirkpatric, Innce, Jenkins, Plumb the OL will continue to get bigger and better.

Always a plus when a o or d lineman is/was a wrestler. Balance,toughness,hand strength.

Spoiler alert from the podcast: Brian F punched a wall and broke his hand.

I LIKE IT!!!!! I was down on our offensive play calling but to find out he was that mad about it tells me if given enough time "passion" won't be a problem. Starts up front, no Kilroy I don't care they had 9 guys in the box the OC can/should scheme around it, those guys need to be the "bullies of the big10" and I think that's exactly what Brian expects from them.

I'll bet he didn't break a hole in it. Walls have a pretty good understanding of his strategy.

Well your assuming I said I know more than the coaches, (which I never did). Of course you know what happens when you assume, right? I also never said that he WAS starting, I said that they have been trying to push him forward as fast as possible, both because they think he can do it, and out of need of course. Numerous comments have been reported here, from KF, BF and coach Tim, on this subject.

Let's not pretend his last name didn't get him in the door of the coaching profession.

wayy too sugar-coated. Calling the offense comatose would be implying it's way better than it actually is. The reality is it has zero life or brain activity.

His father has never understood the "emotion" side of Hawkeye football. Hayden got it, I'm surprised KF didn't learn that from Fry.

I know you demand perfection from True FR, but these players weren't 5* players. I would love to get more 5* PLAYERS Like Epenesa. and more 4* players like Daniels, but right now these are Iowa's OL
LT 3* Jackson
LG Walk on Myer
C 4* Daniels
RG Walk on Renders
RT 3* Welsh

these are waiting in the wings
4* Wirff only by Rivals
4* Kallenberger by Scout and ESPN
4* Levi Paulsen and Landen Paulsen by Scout
this will be the last year a walk on should be a starter on the OL, in the 2019 class these have committed
4* OT Endres 6'6 285 lbs as a HS JR by 247 and ESPN.
4* OT Miller 6'6 315 lbs as a HS JR by 247 and ESPN.
just thinking about big they are now gets me thinking about how big they will be when they step foot on campus in June of 2019. in the 2018 class Iowa will have these to work with
6'8 OT Plumb
6'6 OT Ince
6'4 OG/C Render.

I don't care what some think or claim to know, playing merry go round on the OL because of injuries, does not = perfection.
Welsh a excellent OG BUT a below avg OT and you need avg to above avg on the OL to be a good OL. 1 below avg can screw up the whole mess.

Who ever thought Kilroy would have a handle that got up to 70+ likes? Not this guy. He must have went to one of those "like farms" to build up his stats.
