First, let me say I strongly admire his dedication and I hope Grothus makes 141, stays healthy and places top 4. In fact, the only wrestler at 141 whom I will be cheering harder for is Heil, and that is mainly due to my arguments with certain PSU fans. With that said, a ton of skepticism is warranted.
1.) His career record at the NCAA Tournament is 1-2.
2.) He hasn't wrestled an NCAA match at 141, EVER.
3.) He had a well documented problem trying to make 141 last year.
4.) He hasn't made 141 yet this year.
5.) When is the last time he wrestled a sanctioned match?
6.) Will he be the same wrestler after so much time and will the size change effect this?
7.) Even if he is the exact same wrestler he was when he was healthy at 149, is that enough to AA?
I know many on here defend against the negativity, and rightly so. This is THE Hawkeye board. But, it isn't like Grothus is a guy with proven success that you could pencil in an AA finish based on his resume. If he manages to AA it will be ALL HEART. My hope is he is able to maintain, and moreso, improve his wrestling while working on his weight. Often times the 2 don't go together and I would hate to see him go through so much to finally get to the weight(healthy) and not get the results you want(damn near deserve) for such a huge sacrifice.
It may very well be a positive experience for him regardless, as being an AA or not isn't the end of the world. Still, it would make it a lot sweeter if he did AA........................................Good Luck Mr. Grothus!
He's much better than the option we have now. It is questionable whether Ryan even qualifies. That's enough for Iowa fans to be excited. Nevermind that he beat the top 5 finishers two years ago or that he was neck and neck with Sorensen just last season. Let last seasons 141 cut go--he's approaching it totally different.
