Brody Grothus

First, let me say I strongly admire his dedication and I hope Grothus makes 141, stays healthy and places top 4. In fact, the only wrestler at 141 whom I will be cheering harder for is Heil, and that is mainly due to my arguments with certain PSU fans. With that said, a ton of skepticism is warranted.

1.) His career record at the NCAA Tournament is 1-2.
2.) He hasn't wrestled an NCAA match at 141, EVER.
3.) He had a well documented problem trying to make 141 last year.
4.) He hasn't made 141 yet this year.
5.) When is the last time he wrestled a sanctioned match?
6.) Will he be the same wrestler after so much time and will the size change effect this?
7.) Even if he is the exact same wrestler he was when he was healthy at 149, is that enough to AA?

I know many on here defend against the negativity, and rightly so. This is THE Hawkeye board. But, it isn't like Grothus is a guy with proven success that you could pencil in an AA finish based on his resume. If he manages to AA it will be ALL HEART. My hope is he is able to maintain, and moreso, improve his wrestling while working on his weight. Often times the 2 don't go together and I would hate to see him go through so much to finally get to the weight(healthy) and not get the results you want(damn near deserve) for such a huge sacrifice.

It may very well be a positive experience for him regardless, as being an AA or not isn't the end of the world. Still, it would make it a lot sweeter if he did AA........................................Good Luck Mr. Grothus!

He's much better than the option we have now. It is questionable whether Ryan even qualifies. That's enough for Iowa fans to be excited. Nevermind that he beat the top 5 finishers two years ago or that he was neck and neck with Sorensen just last season. Let last seasons 141 cut go--he's approaching it totally different.

You mean tell me that dieting for 3 plus months is different then trying to cut it all in a week? I agree with you he'll be fine. I'm glad it's midlands that his first go at it. Let's get paddock down to weight now too.

If Grothus exceeds expectations and is a Saturday night guy or in the top 4, we win it. If he AA's we are in it. If he goes 2-2 or another guy gets into the tourney but doesn't do much, we will struggle to win it. We would need 2 to 3 champs and a really good tournament. Not saying it can't be done without Brody but somebody at one of our holes is going to have to put on his big boy pants...

PSU can be beat but I ain't going to lie...Watching that V Tech match, I felt like Louden up in the stands scouting Shute.

It has become crystal clear to all that we can't build a future on "if everything goes right and we get a few breaks."

Some of you guys continue to be very unrealistic about Grothus. The's guys optimal weight is 149 and nothing is going to change that. He may be managing the cut better then last year but it will still take a physical toll and he simply wont be as good at 141 as he was at 149, especially coming off a shoulder injury.

Here's the thing, without him at 141 we got nothing at Nationals. With him at 141 we might have something at Nationals. A small chance is way better than no chance, and not very long ago we assumed we had no chance. So that's why we're happy and hoping for the best. He certainly has the skills to do well, we just hope he can perform.

Too bad there's no weight allowance like in high school!

Nostradamus has spoken. And so it is.

FT...he is at 146 without wrestling...just cardio and diet. Imagine what he can shed with a real workout and live goes. Not too worried...hope for the best, plan for the worst.

I trust the coaches and trainers at Iowa, but I always thought Grothus would bump up to 157 in the off-season. He is 5'10". If coach Doyle ever got his hands on him, he would have filled out nicely I'll bet. Brody hasn't seen 141 since...what? his soph yr in HS? Hope 141 goes well for him and the team. 5'10" and 141 lbs: quite a sacrifice IMHO.
