I can only explain from my perspective.

I was the President of my Young Republicans group 1968-1969.

Always a die hard Republican, until Trump and MAGA.

I come from a very Republican family. My dad an AF officer, disabled vet. My brother, an AF officer. B-52 navigator during Vietnam, and currently Naval intelligence.

My values have not changed, but the party changed when the Tea Party grabbed control, back in the early 2000’s.

I would have voted for Jeb in 2016, but I saw him drop out and why.

I disliked Hilary, and I had lived in NY and CT to know what a lying sleezebag Trump is.

I was angry when Jim Himes won over Chris Shay’s until I got to know Jim Himes. Not much difference, other than the letter next to their names.

I am also a green Republican, and worked with people on oyster restoration.

I believe in National Security, a strong military, and smaller government, but I understand the necessity for social programs.

I have always been pro choice. In my mind, abortion should not be a political issue defined by men. A woman makes a choice, whatever it is, and lives with her decision for the rest of her life. It’s not for a man to control a woman nor vice versa we are equal.

Personally I felt that Dick Cheney was a bit heavy handed.

Protests in the ‘60’s were way worse than these things are today.

January 6 was an insurrection. You can try and claim whatever you want, but if you have ever been in a federal building, you should know that there are signs everywhere that say, “authorized personnel only”. What American that was there that day can’t read?

You also know the regulations regarding the flag. Those rules were broken by the rioters. They attacked federal officers, they defaced government buildings. Do you not realize that’s a crime?

John McCain was not a sucker and loser because he was captured. We had family friends that were guests of the Hanoi Hilton for seven years. They had means to try and keep each other alive. Maybe read some books about the POW experience.

MAGAs have totally disrespected my family and my friends, yet they were the ones that protected draft dodgers like Trump.

Also, there is separation of church and state, read Thomas Jefferson. Jews and free blacks were in this country at the time of the Constitution.

To some, the scope of how “left” you are is based on how much you dislike Trump. But that’s not a scale that goes from left to right, it’s a scale from decent to deplorable. I just hope something eventually turns the tide within the GOP to make the decent ones decide to take it back.

My DIL’s father is similar to you. Conservative, veteran (aircraft carrier pilot), traditional values guy. But he is appalled by Trump and appalled by how the GOP has abandoned everything fr him.

That was amazing! I share most of your views and agree the party took a hard turn with Newt and the Tea Party. MAGA is just further down that path.
I have no party I identify with anymore.

Part of the problem as I see it, is that we don’t suffer fools. Those of us that have lived through so much, have difficulty understanding the lack of education and critical thinking. It was part of our everyday life

There’s a whole lot more to it.

I believe the quote is similar to “… don’t suffer fools lightly…” or thereabouts.
My Granddad went thru the 6th grade and his headmaster told him “I have taught you all I can.” Pops was well read and fired off fiery Letters to the Editor routinely lampooning fools and political hacks. He went to be the depot master of the little short line RR as well as be mayor for years.
His old man traveled the South selling fruit trees and co-founded the bank in their little Piedmont NC railroad terminal town. He hosted multiple NC governors who gave speeches from the front porch.
