Of course you can get a Mexican version for half the price.

No. Local Unions collectively bargain for fixed agreements in a variable economy.

That is why they will always be viewed as parasites when the going gets tough.

They want to get their piece when the going is good, but they don't want to share when the going gets tough.

Their attitude is the same as "Pauli" from "Good Fellas".

"F-You. Pay Me!!!"

That's why the Union mentality is thought to be "Thugs".
Your ignorance 22 is not reasoning to dislike unions. "GoodFellas" is a movie about the mob....not trade unions. Trade Unions made their bones when times were TERRIBLE for the American worker.

You're from a spectacular home town with two great Iowa based companies.

Unions would kill Pella and both companies that make Pella great.

The management of these two companies is "local" and have no stockholders to appease. They also smart enough to understand they need to provide a working environment superior to what most other manufacturing comings provide. That has always been the plus. Local ownership and local pride in providing industry leading products is a "win-win" for all concerned.
I would be willing to bet 22, that IF Pella Corp or Vermeer ever were sold by the families to a national/multinational corporations, unions would not be far behind.

Growing up in duPont-owned Delaware, I saw duPont hold off unions for years with tough tactics. They paid people well enough and provided enough benefits that unions couldn't gain traction.

Compare that approach with the approaches typified by GOP contenders like Scott Walker and John Kasich.

For those who may have been fooled into thinking Kasich is the reasonable one on the stage, check this:

And probably them becoming more uncompetitive and less profitable- correct ?

perhaps....because the stockholders would demand it. Stockholders and employees are on polar opposites here. Stockholders would do anything to cut expenses and increase profits, even it it means "cheapening" a product to do so. As far as a stockholder is concerned, as long as his investments pay a return, he/she could give a shit how its done. Even at the expense of the employees.
