By default, do you see the good in people?

I do not. On a scale of 1 (pond scum) to 10 (me), everyone I meet starts around a 3 and has a very small window to prove themselves worthy. Exhibit certain behaviors or allegiances and you get the immediate boot with no chance to return. This methodology has proven me well over the years as I'm surrounded by interesting people that I enjoy spending time with.

How about you? Do you generally see the good in people?

I tend to see people's flaws, which is definitely a flaw of mine.

That being said, I think most people are good with a flawed nature.

A small percentage of people are truly evil and most of them have a reason like they were abused as children or are mentally ilI.

I’d like to hear more about this “natural law” you speak of!

What is its origin?
What makes it binding?
What variations exist?
How is it adjudicated?
What is its overall purpose?

All the answers can be derived from these two statements.

1) It all stems from a desire to preserve the species. Nothing more. It’s basic instinct. You weirdos think the desire to do so originates from god. I believe it’s just atoms being split over a loooonnnnng time and the instinct just happened at some point.

2). Eventually, we’ll overcome it and destroy ourselves.

If it “all stems from a desire to preserve the species” then….

- Why do we kill each other?
- Why do we kill ourselves?
- Why do we abuse our bodies with drugs & alcohol?
- Why do we destroy our bodies with bad foods?
- Why do we enslave each other?
- Why are we never satisfied?

If it is basic instinct - why do almost all of us violate this “natural law?” Not much of an instinct if we all don’t use it.

There’s always a black sheep (on your kill stuff) and we all think we’re 20 until we’re not (the other stuff). Havin’ a little fun isn’t against natural law.

According to what you describe as instinct, we are all black sheep. Thus, it’s not instinct.

So, where does your “natural law” come from?

I edited my response above because your initial question was disingenuous…going from killing someone all the way to having a beer all in the same hypothetical? Pffft. My bad, it’s what you people do and I shouldn’t haven’t fallen for it.

To your question on this. I already told you. Splitting atoms over time. Norms over a millennia just happen. And they’re primarily revolved around self preservation. Until they’re not. And then we roast ourselves. It will happen.

So if there are “norms,” why do we all constantly violate them?

So you have backed off calling it law and instinct and are now calling it “norms. “ This is a problem.

Laws inherently require a law-giver.

Actually I’m fine with sticking to calling it laws vs norms if that change in nomenclature hurts your feelings. Go back and re-read it that way if you want. And if you’re wondering who the law-giver is, it’s time and nature. Thus the name!

Just so you know. We’re not changing minds tonight bub. And no one is going to end up feeling like they got the other in a “gotcha.” Except me. Because I know I’m right. ;)

I am nice to everyone, it surprises most people. I like striking up a random conversation with someone. That said, it seems my interaction with close friends is less and less frequent. People are just too damn busy.

Yes

I sometimes attach an appearance to message board posters. I literally see you as Cameron which makes you appear more likeable to me. Weird huh?

When Cameron was in Egypt’s land…….

Let my…….Cameron…….go……..

(Cameron is 1 million times more likable than me btw, problem is…….he’s dying - or just can’t think of anything better to do)

No. Too many years of doing my job have taught me that it doesn't take a whole lot for a "good" person to do "bad" things.

I assume that people are not good. Some are better than others, or at least better at presenting themselves as "good".

This is the basic thing that explains why people commit fraud, and forms the basis for implementing controls in businesses:

I mean this sincerely, I am a Christian and I think every human is fundamentally flawed. I also don’t think people have free will. Both of those things cause me to just not be terribly bothered by routine bad behavior or general annoyances. I assume people are having a bad day and move on.

I’m also the kind of person that’s gonna chat you up. If I’m in line at the grocery checkout I’ll start talking to the people around me. I assume everybody wants to have a quick laugh and I try to deliver.

Ultimately I don’t take life too seriously. Whatever you’re doing work hard at it and have as much fun doing it as possible.

This reference took me to a dark creepy place. Thanks a lot Cam.

Yes I generally do. Going thru life expecting to be disappointed is no way to go thru life.

I actually think people are good. Everyone has the potential for evil for certain however.

I do think OP is an exception.

“everyone I meet starts around a 3 and has a very small window to prove themselves worthy.

I think when you meet people if you started out trying to prove yourself worthy you'd have a better experience.

I agree 100% and am of a similar disposition.

I can hear both sides of it.

Ultimately I don’t think it matters much. We are called to certain behaviors. To me it’s just not that important it’s just the way I view the world.

What denomination are you?

I think Calvinism and some Presbyterian groups don't believe in free will entirely.

Blech. Waiting line conversation starters. If you can catch my vibe and just move along….

somebody today and somebody yesterday thanked me for talking to them. You also get the people that are clearly thinking, “This effin’ guy” and then I immediately stop. Honestly it’s about trying to brighten people’s day.

If I have anything close to an ethos I want everybody around me to have sn awesome time and feel valued.
