If KF and Co. want to win back the fans, impress their own players, and curb stomp Illinois State--all big IFs--here's a first play that would get Kinnick rockin':

* Hook and lateral (or ladder): Quick toss to the TE who laterals to the trailing Jonathan Parker. Parker races down the sideline for a long TD that erases the memories of Parker's bowl game gaffe, helping the youngster begin what will be a brilliant season for him and the rejuvenated Hawkeyes.

OK--your turn.

I predict a kick return.

Seriously, though, I know you're asking about our first offensive play from scrimmage. I would like to see us run a play action with Tevaun on a deep corner route with one of the TEs underneath as a secondary option. Give CJ the option of making the pass that's open or just picking up what he can with his feet. My thought is that you take advantage of a defense that's jacked up for a chance to play in a B1G stadium and is likely to try to jump the run.

One of exactly two plays will be called. If CBs play off the ball, CJ tosses a GD special sideways pass to Vandenberg for 1-3 yards. If CBs play closer, hand-off to Daniels to run off tackle for 1-3 yards. And that's the way it should be.

I agree with this call 100%. I can't help but think that ISU will stack the box against the run. A deep pass to start the game, whether complete or not, will force ISU to question their defensive strategy.

On the other hand, an incomplete deep pass means Iowa's in a bit of a hole and has to be (likely) committed to passing again on 2nd (and maybe 3rd) down. A 3 & out would give that defense a lot of confidence.

I have no problem with trying to establish the run and / or short passes to get CJ into a rhythm. Play action passing works best when you've already shown your ground game is a threat.

From the Iowa 20, CJ fumbles the snap, IL State picks it up and runs it in for a TD; within seconds, IL State leads 6-0; when trailing the play, CJ tears his ACL and is lost for the season

I'd just about gotten rid of the memory of Scherff hobbling off the field. Dammit.

It's odd for a team that should use play action a lot, under GD we haven't done it often or well.

Lol. Yep, that'll get em:

"Oh crap! Scrap everything! They threw a pass!"

Really, I can tell you were once a Hawk !

On the third hand, running for little to no gain (or a loss??) on first down does the same two things. First, it gives ISU a lot of confidence right away, not just after 3rd down, and it starts us in the same hole you mentioned above. Personally, I don't care what we do on first down, as long as we move the ball down the field and get some yardage on our first possession.

You're correct that play action typically works best after establishing the ground game. However, Kirk's teams have shown time and again that we open with a running play. Teams that are prepared for that may be fooled with a convincing run fake.

Another factor not mentioned is that we don't yet know whether our new o-line is going to be better at run blocking or pass blocking. Maybe the coaches don't even know yet. If that's the case, it's much more likely that we'll try a low-risk play to try to get them broken in.

Illinois State going to force us to pass and stacks the box. I hope we have receivers that can get separation so we can run the ball at some point.

My first thought was "heads" or "tails". Then I remembered that the visitors make that call. So I decided Iowa's first call of the game would be "time out". Personnel or formation or play clock "situation".

I believe the last 3 years they opened up with a pass. I think this time they'll open with a run off tackle to the right side.

This thread serves as a testament to the nightmare that GD's play calling poses for opposing DCs. The bewildering assortment of formations and balanced play calls are one reason why so many of them (dcs) go bald. Proof is Phil parker who after going agaist GD for the last few years is no longer the chickmagnet that he was.
