This is kind of a fun watch. Game starts at around the 10 minute mark plus we Hawkeye fans get to listen to Jim Zabel again.

6 on 6 was a quick game. Mediapolis vs. Adel. Adel's coach was the legendary Larry Niemeyer, who later won hundreds of games at CR Jefferson.

In 1973 came Title IX. Suddenly the big schools in Iowa had to offer girls sports. It wasn't long before Mediapolis struggled at the Vet against teams like Ankeny, Bettendorf, Des Moines East, Norwalk, Waukee, etc.

My bad, it was Dicks, not Dix. She was playing in 1973, though, for Moravia. Put up 65 points in a game vs. Mormon Trail on February 2.

Also, lol sidenote: Jan Jensen once scored 105 points in a game.

The young lady who would be known as Machine gun Molly Bolin also played at Moravia.

The two dribblevrule made offenses interesting. Players had to move and cut. No standing around watching someone dribble aimlessly with no action toward the hoop. In some ways it made the game better, IMO. Players like Bolin, Long, Dicks, and others could dominate, especially if they were tall and could move.

I would have been 7 at the time of this. No doubt I watched this game with my entire family. The Girls State Tournament was must see TV every year. E. Wayne Cooley knew what he was doing. I remember the floor sweepers decked out in tuxes, the parade of Sweet Sixteen teams, the lighted state map board where each school light would go out when they were eliminated, all as if it was yesterday. Can’t remember ever watching the Boys Tournament. Fond memories for sure.

They still sweep in tuxes. Saw it last week.
