Can we get a definitive ruling on fanny packs?

The Iowa City Arts Festival is this weekend and I was thinking about dusting off a fanny pack. They seem to be out of style. I used to see them all the time during tailgating season. I went to two games at Wrigley Field and didn't see a single one on a non-Asian there. I think the Japanese community in Chicago is fond of them.
State Fair attire only?

The primary decision criteria is why would you care if it's in or not? Will you be there to pick up women? Will you embarrass your children by wearing one? If the answer to both of those is "No", then go for it. Convenience/comfort trumps style unless those questions are Yes.

They are very much in style at raves and EDM festivals.

Paddle your own canoe and care not what the common man thinks.

What do you carry around that necessitates a fanny pack?

Are you really worried about what you wear to an arts festival? You could always decorate it before you go and make a new fashion statement. Go with the feathers.

I would go with something along these lines.

Essential on a bike ride. Nowhere else.

Fanny packs, leather weave belts, cargo shorts, and Doc Martin sandals (well, any brand) with socks will never go out of style in Iowa.

Cargo shorts are the very reason many people don't need a fanny pack or a wife with a large purse.
You have your normal essentials which can fit in basically any pair of shorts - keys, wallet, phone.
Then you have your accessories which cargo shorts are great for - sun block, pen, knife, checkbook, flask, bug spray, e-cig, sunglasses, etc.

Who carries a check book? Or a knife? Or a pen? Or wears cargo shorts? This thread is a great reminder of Iowa fashion sense, that's for sure.

I don't know if they make fanny packs big enough for Steven Patrick to haul around all of his West Coast superiority and smugness. ;)

Not everyone likes to stick their accessories, whatever they may be, up their butt and mule them around like you Steven. It's not a viable option for people who aren't as ostentatious as you.

I was going to ask that. I would not wear one around per se, but I would for a bike ride. The GF is just horrified that I would use one at all. Isn't that the whole point of them?

What about sweet corn? Could he fit an ear of that in there?

What do you need a knife for? Or a pen? Or a checkbook? Seriously, i haven't carried any of those things around in my entire life. You've got to be older than 60 right? Got some brill cream in that fanny pack too?

I'm 30 and carry a checkbook everywhere I go.

I do have a fanny pack that I wear when my son and I are backpacking. The couple of small compartments on my backpack that I can access without taking the pack off didn't quite hold enough. So, I do wear the fanny pack on the front, it does sort of blend in with the waist belt of the backpack.

Steven, you can't be that narrow minded can you? Many small companies don't take credit cards because they don't want to pay credit fees. If you're making a large purchase the obvious answer is to use a check. No, I don't carry a checkbook on me at all times but sometimes, yes. Same goes for a knife or pen. There are occasions that warrant their use. My knife doubles as a bottle opener so if I'm camping, grilling with buddies, or fishing I'm bringing my knife. My knife is also handy opening boxes and clamshell packages. Has the pretentious Seattle air gotten to you?

It's not brill cream you turd. It's Brylcreem. If you are going to insult someone get it right. I'm more of a Dapper Dan man myself.

What small companies don't take credit cards? And wouldn't it make more sense to carry cash for those situations instead of a bulky checkbook? You've got to be over 60 right? You'd figure with that amount of life experience you would have come up with some more efficient ways to carry your stuff around that doesn't make you look like you just competed in the special olympics

I gotta go with sp on this one. I stopped carrying a checkbook with me two decades ago.

I know people who still carry knives around too...flabbergasts me yet to this day. Almost scary, the ones who carry those big arse ones in a belt case. "Just for that once a year time when you need something to gut a deer with" I guess.

If I have to carry anything more than a wallet (front right pocket) and cell phone (front or rear left pocket), I wear a shirt with pockets or some sort of jeans/shorts with larger/more pockets. Like someone said earlier...bike rides, out on the boat...things like that.

You're also mocked behind your back about it as well. This may be more amusing than not being allowed to go out with your friends when you're home on the weekends.
Well when you travel all over Iowa, mostly podunk towns, a checkbook is needed. I wouldn't carry one of I didn't have to. I learned my lesson years ago when I didn't carry one during the week. But the almighty Steven knows everyone's situations. You're literally to stupid to argue with yet here I am.

What do you do with it?
I should clarify that I carry it everywhere during the week when I'm working. I have needed it many times. Most small towns I work in don't take debit/credit. If I need an oil change, being I drive 1200 miles a week on average. If I blow a tire in the middle of nowhere and need a new one, again small town auto shops usually don't take plastic. I blow 3-4 tires a year, 500 miles a week on gravel is no good on tires. If I'm in one of those small towns and need gas at a station that is cash or check only.
If I'm going out in Des Moines, no I don't carry a checkbook.
