Car people! Engine mounts or transmission?

Could be as simple as spark plugs. Could be as expensive as motor or transmission mounts.

Crazy you’re asking people that can’t properly diagnose without personally experiencing the vehicle.

We can’t tell the difference either.
I’m actually Ray Magliozzi.

I’m not asking you to tell me what it is, just asking if there’s a method to tell the difference. There are numerous tips online about putting on parking brake, putting into drive while watching the engine, etc .

Just curious if anybody had any suggestions for diagnosis.

Probs the hemi going out.

Drain out all the water, take in plenty of oil, grease up that back end, get out on the highway and go at full speed for about ten miles. See how it feels.

Get it up to a 100 mph and slam on the brakes. If the engine dislodges and rolls down the highway your engine mounts we’re of poor quality.

Mechanic should be able to see if engine mounts were bad. Years ago I had an old Buick for the kids and mechanic said after an oil change they were bad. I had some welder fix them at the mechanics suggestion.

It’s my wife’s vehicle. So I should grease up her back end?

Yes.

Ends up looking something like this if you need to take a look underneath.

Fair enough. I’m not a mechanic by any means. I’ve come to the conclusion that most people claiming to be mechanics are not. I also have little to zero trust in dealerships.

My 3 years experience in auto has taught me that almost all people claiming to be mechanics are full of shit.

If it’s a newer vehicle (2015 or newer) then unless they got some credentials they ain’t got shit. No matter what they tell you.

Manufacturers right now WANT you to take your problems to the dealership. They are designing those problems for that.

It’s, quite honestly, infuriating. Yet it’s what we’ve accepted as a society.

I forgot about CV joints!
Does it have cv joints? Is it rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, all wheel drive, 4 wheel drive? The way you're describing the clunk, it does sound like engine mounts should be checked. If you can see them, stand to the side and look at them while someone else sits in it. Have them put it in drive and brake torque it on and off a little and see if you can see any movement in the engine mounts. If it's a rear wheel drive or a primarily rear wheel drive, the rear end would be another thing to check.

Also, if it has a driveshaft going to the rear, it may have a carrier bearing on the drivshaft with a big piece of rubber around it to stabilize the driveshaft that should be checked. The rubber could go bad allowing the driveshaft to make a clunk.

If it's a front drive GMC yeah it could be CV or could be the A-arms or control arms or sway bar type things... Whole bunch of rubber bushings that go bad
