Getting a clunk when I accelerate - any of you know how I can tell the difference?
Thanks in advance

There's many things it could be. Where exactly (the area) does it sound like it's coming from? Could be simple like exhaust or U-Joint or it could be expensive like the tranny.Getting a clunk when I accelerate - any of you know how I can tell the difference?

I’m actually Ray Magliozzi.Could be as simple as spark plugs. Could be as expensive as motor or transmission mounts.
Crazy you’re asking people that can’t properly diagnose without personally experiencing the vehicle.
We can’t tell the difference either.
I’m not asking you to tell me what it is, just asking if there’s a method to tell the difference. There are numerous tips online about putting on parking brake, putting into drive while watching the engine, etc .Could be as simple as spark plugs. Sounds like underneath and forwardHave you been able to isolate where the clunk is coming from?
Single clunk?
It’s my wife’s vehicle. So I should grease up her back end?Probs the hemi going out.
Drain out all the water, take in plenty of oil, grease up that back end, get out on the highway and go at full speed for about ten miles. See how it feels.
My guess is a bad cv joint.GMC SUV

Fair enough. I’m not a mechanic by any means. I’ve come to the conclusion that most people claiming to be mechanics are not. I also have little to zero trust in dealerships.I’m not asking you to tell me what it is, just asking if there’s a method to tell the difference. Just curious if anybody had any suggestions for diagnosis.
Put it in park and turn everything off. Rock it back and forth by pushing it and listen for the clunk. This will tell you if it's possibly a CV or U-Joint.GMC SUV
It should still be pretty greased and soggy. It’s my wife’s vehicle. So I should grease up her back end?

Does it have cv joints? Is it rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, all wheel drive, 4 wheel drive? The way you're describing the clunk, it does sound like engine mounts should be checked. If you can see them, stand to the side and look at them while someone else sits in it. Have them put it in drive and brake torque it on and off a little and see if you can see any movement in the engine mounts. If it's a rear wheel drive or a primarily rear wheel drive, the rear end would be another thing to check.I forgot about CV joints!
Rear wheel drive - U jointMy first thought would be a driveshaft u joint. Then cv axles next.
