Car salespeople that refuse to negotiate

Wow….U can see why she left Keokuk! What a gd pit that place has become! Empty store fronts, decaying houses, piss poor streets…. 50 years ago Keokuk was a reasonably prosperous river town…120 yrs ago, Keokuk hav more millionaires per capita than any cities in the USA, I believe. What has happened to the Mississippi River towns of Iowa in the last 50 years is a crime.. mostly thanks to a concerted effort by state Republicans (Branstad) to bust unions and chase decent jobs to other states.
Keokuk was a castings manufacturing city. Their customers started buying castings from overseas vendors in the 1990’s. They were able to costs immensely.

This, last time I sat and negotiated a price the salesperson had to keep going to the manager to get an ok on selling the car.
Long time ago. Not much has changed.
Isn’t that just part of the “dog and pony show” that is buying a car in America? Sales manager, finance person, warranty expert…all coming at you abs letting you “sweat it out”…just remember….It is YOUR money and you can always “walk away”…as long as you don’t need the car immediately, the dealership generally heeds the sale more.

Car buying is miserable. And all cars are more expensive from when I bought my used vehicle 5 years ago.

Odd thing I noticed when I purchased a car for my daughter in June- they didn’t ask me to verify income? In the past I always came with “paperwork” to provide financing.
I love negotiating on a car; I see it as a challenge. I had a Chevy salesman I knew once tell me anything can be negotiated, except for Corvettes. He said at his dealership those were what you see is what you get.

Well, it’s a goddamned out of a town now…I see that a couple of times a year. Ft. Madison is another “bust out” city of recent vintage…Is it coincidence that as these river towns fell into demise, their politics have moved from Democrat to red Republican? I think not…

My problem hasn’t been negotiating the price and dealing with the sales rep. It’s dealing with the finance slappies that are trying to get me to buy all the extended warranties. Literally asking me what payment I am comfortable with. What payment do you think I want? $0 you dummy. Last car I bought they had like $5k in warranties added into the financing. I laughed.

Our last 2 cars we negotiated online…the first one they offered $500 less than what we saw on Truecar or edmunds. We went in and test drove, then bought it.

I always negotiate via email and I don’t walk in until the price is agreed upon including all dealer fees.

Once a dealer tried to add $125 fee right at the end. I said take that off or I am leaving. They said you are going to walk out and drive 100+ miles home over that? I said yup.

They took the fee off.

Test driving a car is overrated. I drive my cars until they are dust so of course anything modern is going to drive great.

I will use autotrader.com to get an idea of discounts being offered in a 100-200 mile radius as a starting point.

The salesperson has no power. The sales manager is the power and the salesperson is just trying to control the mood.
I always use Auto Trader but I'm buying new and have to expand my search area. I find where the factory incentives are running and make a deal. I bought my Ram from Indianola Iowa.

Almost every time I get into my recent model “nice” car I get pissed off because it was expensive and it doesn’t do much that my >10yo hatchback that cost less than my annual phone bill doesn’t. I sometimes wish vehicles brought me joy, because they are so expensive and pretty essential to a mainstream contemporary lifestyle.

Are you sure it's not because 4 lane interstates going east and west ( I 80 ) and north and south ( 380/27 ) across Iowa and railroads have changed the way goods were once moved across the US and the reason river towns existed in the first place. Naw it's the Republicans. Simple mind always at work here folks...
