Carton to Marquette

Good for him, hope it works out....maybe Iowa and Marquette meet again before he finishes his college eligibility in the Gavitt games...

Strange move. More to story that we’ll most likely never know.
I would agree with the above comment. I watched DJC in his games at OSU. IMO selfish player and I was never a fan of selfish players (playing or watching).

Maybe it’s not, but I (and likely others) were under the assumption that he wanted to be closer to home given his mental health situation
Who knows. I'm not convinced he didn't just want out of OSU, and no I don't have any info. Just think its interesting, that everything is fine now, and he's off to another good basketball destination. On top of that, he's probably got a decent enough excuse to petition to play right away. Good luck to the young man.

Not surprised at all as I may have mentrioned here before. I think it is a pretty good situation for DJ.
Other than when playing against WI or IA, I wish him much success.

I wish him well but he was also in “a pretty good situation” at Ohio State. Playing time and style of play shouldn’t be the reasons for transfer. So what is it? He’s a little but not that much closer to home if that was what he was looking for. I don’t necessarily think he will be “THE guy” at Marquette any more than OSU.

Why is it a strange move/

Playing time, style of play would not be reasons to transfer in his case. If closer to home was the reason you would think he’d chose a school closer than 4 hour drive. If he wants to be “THE” guy on the team probably not much better of a situation. Marquette is a nice program but certainly not a huge step up if any. Facilities/weight room are a downgrade if you have pro aspirations. I like him better at MU than OSU but I still see it as a strange move.

Not really that close. 4 hours compared to 6 to tOSU. Hardly what I would call "playing close to home".

It’s really only about 3:15 to Milwaukee if you don’t mind driving through Illinois and tolls. Columbus is about 7:15 from Bettendorf.

I don’t quite buy the “closer to home” bit myself, because it feels like there’s a lot more than was made public on both sides. Milwaukee is however a decent amount closer than Columbus, OH.

I think people are making too big of a deal about distance. Outside of Iowa, there aren’t any real close schools. ISU is about 3:15 from Bettendorf, Drake about 2:45, UNI 2, NW 2:30, Illinois - who gives a crap, Marquette is in the Big East and was a good fit for Carton.

With that being said I agree that there is probably more to the story.

I agree and Iowa being 50 minutes away, coupled with the “closer to home” excuse, I get why people are questioning it or making it bigger than what it is. I haven’t paid too much attention, so I don’t know what all DJ said other than he left the team/school for mental health reasons. If DJ didn’t say he wanted to be closer to home/family, I apologize.

I’m glad he chose Marquette and not a B1G school.

So in your scenario, Iowa is the only choice if he wants to be closer than 7.5 hours from home. That’s exactly what I mean by making it bigger than it is. Iowa didn’t want him as they can’t give him the role he wants, and rumor is he didn’t want to play with Pat anyway. He is 4 hours closer to home, if that’s what he was looking for, that’s exactly what he did.

I guess I wasn’t clear enough. I said I understand people making it a bigger deal based on being close to home, never once said I agreed with them. I understand it though. There are well over a half dozen schools within three, three and half hours from Bettendorf. I figured Wisconsin and Illinois would be high on his list with an outside chance at Nebraska. I’m just glad that he’s leaving the B1G.

He’s not going to Iowa and the reason or reasons are pretty much irrelevant at this point. I was never expecting DJ to commit to Iowa so I really wasn’t emotionally invested in it.

What school(s) wouldn’t have been a “strange move” in your opinion?

As far as “facilities” Marquette’s are top notch. Few programs anywhere can beat Ohio State. For basketball...?Maybe Kentucky. Maybe. Can’t think of any other.

Thanks for your opinion
I look at it as a choice that he made that he found as a bad choice so he left.
Just like in the job place. You find a job that you thought was a good choice but turns out it wasn't.
So you either transfer to something in a different dept or you find a new job with a different company. I don't remember for sure but I think the statement of the reason he left was posted as mental health issues and not wanting to be closer to home.
The assumption that he was homesick as I see it came from this board myself include.
Maybe he just did not like the scenery and the company he was with and a bit selfish in not being the "go to guy" like he was in high school.
I hope he gets things sorted out and does well.
